Lost end of muffler on 110 and lost power
#1
Hi Dave,
I've been running my new 110 in Thunder Tiger's Rare Bear. I've got about 1 gallon of fuel through it now, and it's really starting to run good. I only have two flights in the air, thanks in large part to poor gear block design of the plane. But on last Sunday's flight all was well, and it was running real good and fast, then I lost all power, rpm dropped down to just keeping the plane in the air (it's over 10lbs). After landing, I found the end cap of the muffler had popped off but was still in the cowl.
Would this be the cause of the loss of power? I didn't think this engine needed any back pressure. Would having the entire muffler in the cowl have done anything, it's worked before. There are large exhaust holes on each side of the plane, I just don't have an exhaust extension on the motor.
Thanks,

It need some backpressure, even if it's just an exhaust tube. The reason it lost power with part of the muffler gone is because the settings will change due to loss of backpressure. If you reset the needles, it should run OK.

That's good to hear. I was hoping that was the problem and not something else.
I will just put the end back on and fly again!
thanks,
Jim
