Default YS 140fz startin problem

hi all,
i`ve bought a 140 second hand the other day i`ve started it it ran for about three minutes i opened it up and when i adjusted the top end it leaned slightly but before i had chance to turn the needle back it just stopped.
when i tried to turn it over it seems that each compression turn the compression point seems to moved slightly. i took the back plate of and the bearing, conrod etc all seem fine there`s no noises it all seems smooth.
could it be a cam shaft problem.
help would be very much appreciated
cheers
richard

Pull the cam gear cover off and remove the cam gear to see if it is damaged.
