See attached photo. I pulled this piston from my 160DZ after it wouldn't idle for poo. No prop strikes, no back fires, etc. Ran great all year then all of a sudden it started shutting off at idle. Tore down the engine and this is what I found. The only other item that was "off" was one of the wrist pin guide has worn abnormally and was 1/2 the thickness it should have been. Other that that, the engine showed no abnormal wear. Ring is fine and basically the same size as a new one. Sleeve seems fine. Cam is OK and does not show abnormal wear, etc. Any ideas on why this piston failed? Thanks - John

Hmmm thats an odd one I have only see this a couple times. Once was years ago with the 140L piston on an engine that had been detonating in the mid range. The guy just kept running it this way for a long time and eventually the top of the piston cracked but worse that this.
The other was a test piston that I ran a couple years ago. Contact Richard he should take care of it for you.
