I have a friend who has a DZ 170 and doesn't know what prop he should run for break in for this engine. I think the book says something like 18x13 and I don't know where to get one and it doesn't sound right anyway. Where can he buy whatever prop you sugggest.

Nope the manual for the 170DZ says to run a prop between 17-13 and 18-11
I would recommend running it for break on a 17-12 and then going to the 17-13 or maybe one of the 18-10 varieties that are available.
APC makes several 18's
18-10 (not the best its a really large hub and its heavy)
18-10PN
18.1-10
18.1-10W
18.1-11
18.1-12
To run the large loads of these props you are likely going to need to run 30% Cool Power Heli fuel. If you want a prop that gives the best power all around with noise not really a concern the 17-12 and 17-12W APC are good.
The 18.1-12 and 18.1-10W is a pretty high load...These will work at sea level applications with strong engines running the 30% heli...This is what we do with the pattern models. For a sport model or aerobatic model non pattern type model the 17-12 might just be the best overall. The load is light and it will make tons of power on the 170DZ.
Running less nitro fuel and you are going to need to go to a smaller prop. Still hit your rpm numbers....but a 16.5-13W is a good one. The 18.1-10PN is also a little lighter load as its narrower blade.
Since the 170DZ is really designed around the pattern models the prop sizes are pretty much a guide based on what guys will use in the pattern models. That is why the 17-13 to 18-12. Reality is I think the 17-12 and 17-12W are pretty darn good props for this engine. Its just too loud for our pattern models with the 17-12's a little more pitch on the 17-13 makes it quiet and meets our noise rules.
Basically keep the engine above about 7800rpm and up to about 8600rpm. The higher the rpm in this range the better the power you will get in a sport aerobatic application. We load them down slower rpm with the 18.1-12's to make them quiet on our pattern models. This is not the best power its just the best power for the noise situation. The 17-12 is probably the best raw grunt.
The Point 1 (18.1) in the numbers is a version number the prop is still an 18" blade but the blade shape is a much bigger one. Not so much a Wide blade but a bigger meaty blade.
