If you can see fuel coming out of the valve cover gasket area when running you have a leak in the fuel system that will cause erratic running.

The leaking value cover is probably my problem but the thing needs an overhaul...its just gone too long without some TLC. Also, the value/value train under the cover had elements of rust in there and if I don't cure that problem, it will spread to the rest of the engine before long...or else its a sign it exists somewhere else already in the engine.

Which engine do you have 3d-aholic ?
Your correct about the rust issue, chances are if the rockers and valve train are rusty so are the bearings & Crank,Cam and lifters not a good deal at all.
I run my engines dry after I get done flying for the day and if I know there not going to be used for very long I add some YS compatable after run Oil (approx 1 Tablespoon or more)and swing it over with the starter for 5-10 secs to get the oil all the way thru the engine. This helps alot to prevent rusting ,but I understand some folks purge the engine in afterrun oil, close up the carb, remove the plug and add oil to the top of the piston replace the plug and store it.
Make sure if you do this to get as much oil out of the engine before you try to fire it ,especially out of the cylinder. Hydrolocks can bend rods and create all sorts of problems.
Myself I have never had a reason to do this but its another option to help prevent rusting.

Its a YS63 pre-S version.
I run my engine dry each time.
I fly just about every week or every other week. It rarely sits for a month.
Actually very little rust for 6 years and 40 gallons...but I saw a tiny bit and I want to get a handle on it before it gets to be a real problem. This is not a new motor and has seen alot of run time. I think the origin is in the value train...only affected a few parts...99% of them were fine. I think it was only on the little nuts. The bearings feel fine still and the motor is "smooth"..no grit. However, when I tear it down, I'll know....its the only way to be sure.
