Default ZDZ 40 Hard first start

My ZDZ 40 runs great. Warm starts are one flip. However, should it really take 20 to 25 flips on the first cold start of the day to get it to pop? (Choke on) I'm actually running the low end a tad rich or it gets even worse.

Thanks,
Chuck

Solder the hole closed in the choke plate and re-drill with a 1/32 bit. Keep me posted.

Default Choke hole

Mike, sorry, I should have mentioned that it is soldered shut. I have a gallon of 40:1 Penzoil through it and I'm into my 3rd gallon, running 40:1 synthetic now. Over 7K max on Pro-Zinger 20x10, but I richen it so I get an occasional burble, even on verticals.

My D&L Cap weighs 12 pounds, 14 ounces and this motor really moves it!

I would say open the low end a bit more and see what happens. Be careful that you are not flooding the engine as well....
Thanks,
Mike

Default My arm is sore...

Hi Mike,

I tried going richer on the low end and it did not help. Last time out it took 21 hard flips with the choke on to get a pop. I'm not flooding it. After it fired I opened the choke and it took 9 flips for it to start. I've tried various throttle settings. Warm starts are no problem.

Fuel is 92 octane 40:1 synthetic, prop is Pro-Zinger 20x10 turning around 6900 when set for an occasional burble.

The choke hole is soldered shut. Will re-drilling it to 1/32" help anything?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chuck

Default Mike?

Hi Mike,

Please help. I'm going flying Friday evening and I could use some ideas!

(By the way, I have "ZDZ 40 RV-L" in one inch high letters on the cowl of my Cap so it's not exactly impressing the guys at the field when they see me fighting to get this thing running)

Try opening the low end a bit more, if it does not help, we need to do a carb swap......
Thanks,

Default Low End

Hi Mike,

I have opened it some...to the point that it smokes a bit when it starts, and the idle is erratic and throttle transition is poor.

Perhaps you can tell me what initial high and low speed needle settings I should go back to?

Thanks!

Chuck

Default Update

Hi Mike,

I've opened the low end as far as 3 turns with no help. Last night I reset to 1.5 as you suggested and it took 27 flips before it popped. I sent an email regarding the carb change.

Thanks for your help,

Chuck

Mike,

It's a Bing carb.

Thanks,
Chuck
