RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
Ran the xs today for another few packs all was good till I launched it off a few 10 foot high jumps, then I broke the bottom loop on the rear left shock. :-( fixed it with a pull tie temporarily and ran another pack through it. Does anyone know if the big bore shocks for the traxxas stampede would fit. I don't have any to check with but a buddy of mine has some extra ones he will give me.

The most important thing about what battery to use, is how many amps your setup is pulling. That needs to be measured with a watt meter then you will know what you need. The amps being pulled will differ depending on your gearing as well as other factors.

I saw that some people were asking if the diffs in the XS are the same as the MT2. Since one of my carrier bearings fell apart on me this weekend I took the diff out, and while I had it out I compared it to some extra MT2 diffs I have laying around. While they look similar, the carrier is different and the OD of the XS ring gear is actually a couple of mm smaller than the HD MT2 gearset I compared it against.

RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
i think i figured it out, if its pulling 140 amps, then a lipo with a 40c rate is about what you need to run, if its a 4000mah 40c, then that would be 160 amps which would be good if its pulling 140.
maybe thats why people are fring ESC's, the amps on the lipos are not putting out the amps needed to pull. if you have a 4000 25c rate thats only 100 amps, which means the motor is putting out 40 more amps then the battery. let me know if i'm right.
so i just answered my own question red. LOL!!

hey red if its pulling 140 amps, would a 2s 4000mah lipo with a 25c rate work for the truck then?

I am using 25c 4000mah gens ace on a stock xs without issues the esc runs warm never hot yet, but the motor gets hot.

4000x25=100000 divided by 1000 = 100amps

The 140 amps is off the line, After this it will be much lower after the RC is moving. this means you just need a lipo that has a higher burst current then 140 amps that can handle that load for a second or two then any thing with a 100 amp constant rating will be ok. This is why some packs have a rating like 30-45c this means 30c constant and 45c burst.

I doubt that as on take off I have 50c burst and that puts me well over also I have a good charger and I know if my batteries are being damaged or not. I also run 5200 30c on it and the temps are around the same.

Cool the batteries i have coming have a 50c burst rate and 25c continuous, so i'm good then

I always go on the constant rating only to be safe, if your pack drops under 3v/cell under load, then it's a problem. Only way to be 100% sure is to use a Watt Meter or Eagletree. Relying on a 'burst' rating which may or may not be over inflated IMO is a bit foolish.

if you look back a few pages we see the stock XS is pulling around 140 amps off the line.

I was speaking mostly about people who may have modded their truck in some way. Either by changing the motor or gearing or both. That should be checked with a watt meter.

Right, but the manual says/recommends a lipo with a ''C'' rating of 25 or higher..
ORIGINAL: redfisher1974
The C rating is relevant to the MAH of the pack. Example a 5000mah 20c pack will handle more current then a 3600mah 25C pack etc.

RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
From what I know about ESC design is that they charge and discharge the capacitors at 8kHz. If the C-rating of the battery is low or the battery is bad and can't supply enough current on the charging phase but it will continue to the discharge phase 180 degrees later. Its okay if its not filled but it obviously won't make as much power and it does cause heat when there isn't enough of a supply. It runs short on current (actually voltage) for a short period of time anyways for most situations. The amount of heat increases when the lack of supply increases so low C-batteries will heat the ESC more. For this reason I try to go as high C as possible.
I could be wrong and don't claim expertise here.
