Don't know myself, but I'm thinking I want to pull my drive cups out and harden them all, as well as the shafts. I only have 1 run on mine, but thinking I might do this before they get worn down.

Does anyone know where I can get parts like you used to find on ebay? Where you could buy the whole tranny or front and ends..

Hey guy's, long time.

So i'm finally back in the rc kick, finally gotten bitten but the electric bug and I'm looking at these.
I read through the last 15 or so pages, couldn't find everything i was looking for and didn't want to read a 130ish pages.

I read something about the rear end needing to be shimmed, and a bad batch of screws. I'm looking at the kit version, what are the need to know's about this truck. Item's to look out for, parts to upgrade or keep on hand.

The questions i have are:
What size motor is needed for this type of truck? I know higher kv is for lighter trucks like 1/10 st/buggies, but is 3300 to low is 4000+ to high?
I know higher C rated packs offer better punch and cooler temps, but what is the overall average rating to get for 25-30min run times. 25c 40c, 3300/5000/7000mah, 2s/3s?
Are any parts from the e-zilla/savage compatible with this truck?

The motor size is a standard 1/10 size 540 can. The Kv rating depends on what your intents are as far as running. The 4000kv stock motor is plenty low end and top end. Any lower Kv and you will just be gaining torque and losing top end. And vice versa for a higher Kv motor.

As far as batteries go...the higher MaH rating, the longer the runtime. A 5000mah battery will give you a good window, probably 20-30 minutes, depending how you are on the throttle. The C rating is just how much voltage they can provide when the motor draws power in simple terms. This truck is light, so I wouldn't spend the extra money getting a high C rated battery. 25-30c is sufficient.

And lastly, as far as parts go, and as far as I know, and nobody else has mentioned it, no other parts are compatible from other models. HPI made this a one truck only, and made parts for it only. You will have some aftermarket stuff available too.

Well i went ahead an pulled the trigger on it, now i just need to pick out a motor/esc and some batteries.

Any recommendations? I use hobbyking/partz a lot, my last set of lipo's were from hk and have been top notch.

i stuck a mamba max pro ESC and a castle 1410 3800kv 4 pole motor in my XS SS.

its recommended (or it was to me when i put mine together) that you use a 4 pole motor as the truck is fairly heavy for it's size.
and i will flat out tell you right now, with the motor/ESC combo i put in mine, a 25c battery will not cut it, im running one and iv got the most inconsistent "turbo lag" iv ever seen in my life and it gets maybe hotter than it should. id go at least 40c on the battery and in the 5000mah range (at least for my set up)

I ran the stock motor/esc on mine, and used a Duratrax 25c lipo and never had an issue. Did standing backflips on demand. I think the lower KV in yours Hooligan might have drew too much off the start. But really, the truck is small and light enough that a 30c should be perfect.

Haven't posted in a while so here's a quick update. The only thing I have really done to my truck (aside from my initial upgrades) is the heatsink and fan on the motor. I do have a question though. Is anyone running aluminum knuckles? My wheels are starting to wobble as I'm getting a lot of slop in the stock plastic components. I can replace those with more plastic but I'm thinking aluminum would stand up to the abuse of jumping a little better. Would it be advised to run aluminum arms with the knuckles or could you get buy with just aluminum knuckles.

I'm still impressed with this little beast. I had it out in the pouring rain the other day and it would still do standing backflips on wet concrete. Using a 2S 5000mah 25c lipo.

Anyway, a couple pics. I have a short little vid of me just messing around on the driveway, I'll post it later.

Just did a quick bashing body for the XS, and backed with drywall tape to make it last longer. I have another body in the mail which I'm trying to add lights and all for raining day runs...

So like many of you guys i've faced various issues with this truck, from screws being soft and very strip-able to shock end's tearing apart. This has been one of the most troublesome kit's i've ever had from hpi, but i understand when this stuff is manufactured things happen so i brushed it off. I see a lot of you guys talking about shock ends (Caps?) and what will work, i haven't seen anyone post about aftermarket shocks and the only thing i could find was proline's aftermarket shocks for the truck.

I had a few old traxxas trucks laying around as part's trucks (Nitro sport/T-maxx 2.5r) so i stole the shock/s off the sport and the t-maxx, here's what i found.

Here's all the shocks displayed order HPI/NirtoSport/T-maxx

You'll notice the shocks are pretty close in size.

The traxxas shock bodies from the sport and the maxx look the exact same, the only difference was the thickness of the spring the maxx had.

The end cap's, hpi's vs traxxas's

Hpi's ball join in traxxas shock left, stock metal ball join in tmxx shock right.

While i was at it, i figured i would try on a tmaxx shock to see if it would even fit and how well it would work.

The clearance was a little close but it fit and nothing binded and looks like a good alternative if the need arises.

So i got tired of looking at the stock body, I have a few laying around but since i got this truck I've only had one in mind.

Before

After

It's the stock body from a Hot Bodies E-zilla, here's the old hpi part number #7187.

So I have just a handful of packs through my XS and under low throttle take offs it seems to shutter. Check out the video, is this normal? Bad motor or maybe ESC? I always blow it off well after playing in the snow.. Here's the video:

what battery are you running? my SS did that on a 3200mah 20c. when i tried a 3300mah 25c the almost went away. and when i put a 6200mah 50c in it, it solved the problem

I have two 4000 mah batteries, one is a 2s and one is a 3s. Both packs are Venom brand and it does this on both.

The C-rating on the pack is what you need to be concerned about. With this truck, 30c is lowest. It is a light truck, but 25c lipos are for 2wd Traxxas vehicles which are really light and don't draw a lot of amps. If the battery cannot supply the amps the motor/esc are drawing, it will stutter.

I just looked, Mine are both 20c. Will it hurt to run 20c packs? I'll be buying more packs but I'd still like to use these rather than waste them.

It wont hurt anything. They just wont last as long as a higher C rated lipo, and you just wont have the punch of a higher rated lipo.

Good to know, Thanks. Good lord, with the punch this thing has on 20c it should be unreal with 35c+ packs!
