Default Ace Simple Ultimate Power

I've started an Ace Simple Ultimate, which I was originally going to put an OS Max 28F in (oldie but goodie) . I am sheeting the wing leading edge with a 2 1/2" wide 1/16" stock, 3/4" on the trailing edge and will simulate rib cap strips in lieu of the strapping tape and low temp film covering. I figure a cap strip on either side of the cabane struts will look nice. I'll also sheet the wing area at the fuselage and modify the fuselage to fit [8D]

Question is regarding power source and servos? The 28 looks too big in my mind [>:] . What's your pleasure on 2-stroke power for this (15 - 19?), and do you think Hitec HS81s will be sufficient, or do I use 225s Sure wish Norvel had a .15

Thanks

Why not use the Norvel .15? They make a .10 and a .15 big mig if that's your pleasure. I'm kind of stalled on one of these myself and I have a TT.15 for it.

For some reason I was thinking Norvel went directly to a .40 from their .074. I got confused as they don't make a .25 []

I'll look into a .15 tomorrow. I've wanted an escuse to get one anyway

Serendipity (sp? ) reigns

Thanks!

www.quantummodels.com has Norvel .15s and .25s
The .25 Big Mig is rather large (but light) it looks more like a .40, I have one.

John C. --

Current NORVEL R/C offerings are .061 (AME and BigMig), .074 (BigMig), .15 (AME and BigMig), .25 (AME and BigMig) and the AX-40. The .049 has been dropped from the R/C lineup at this time. Based on the paperwork with the AX-40, there appears to be an AX-25 coming up. (Ed Stevens of NORVEL has been closed mouth and won't let his RCU buddies in on any specifics )

Both the AME and BigMig version of the .061 are bushing engines, but the AME is more aggressively ported for a better high end.

The .15 and .25 AME's and the AX-40 are ballbearing, with dual needle carbs. The BigMig .15 and .25 are bushed with air bleed carbs. (I will have to look, but I think I had a .15 BigMig come in with a dual needle -- I'll look tomorrow) As with the .061, the .15 and .25 AME's have larger induction ports for a higher top end. For sport flying, I think you would be quite happy with the BigMig.

Although Duke mentioned a .10, I am not aware of any NORVEL in this displacement.

Unless you're really weight conscious, I would use the HS-311 std. in place of the HS-225BB -- difference in cost for 4 servos is almost $55.00 -- weight penalty is about 2 oz..

Edit: The BigMig .15 had an air bleed -- must have been wishful thinking.

If you decide to get a NORVEL .15 or .25, you will need to order a spanner wrench -- this is needed to remove the glow plug adapter retaining ring at the top of the head.

Yep, I messed it up. It is a .15 and a .25. I was positive about the .15 and knew there was another size so guessed at the .10. Of course with the .074 who needs a .10?

I built my ACE Simple Ultimate with 1/32" sheeted wings and originally powered it with a Norvel .15 AME. It wasn't the right combo. The Norvel wanted to be in something sleek, fast and light - none of the attributes which the ACE Ultimate posses. I replaced it with an OS .25FP which could swing a larger prop at lower RPM's. I flew that thing day in and day out for a few years. It was stepped on, fell off of the table and landed inverted on the top wing numerous times and still flew great, even in a gale. One day during a moment of temporary insanity I gave it away with the intention of building a lighter one for a .15, but I haven't got around to it yet. I guess that's two things I need to add to my list: 1. Build another ACE Ultimate 2. Find something suitable for a Norvel .15 AME.

Andrew,

I wouldn't be surprised if the new engine was a .25AX, but I sure hope not. I hope, I hope, I hope, I hope, I hope, I hope, I hope it's an .02 or an .03!

in reading this I'm seeing conflict ,,Norvel now has an .061,.074,.15,.25,.40 in various AX,AME, and/or Big Mig variations,,no more .049 and a new model we dont know about yet? does that about sum it up?

Bipe?!! you gave away a Bipe?!! got anymore moments of questionable sanity that you feel coming on, I'll pay shipping to North Carolina,,I want to build an Ace simple ultimate when I have the skills to fly one....Rog

Yup!

I don't know if the .049 has been dropped completely, but it is no longer an option in the R/C lineup (may be out of stock and waiting for a new run). The C/L .049 is listed as "limited supply".

Realistically, if we look at what our fellow club members are flying, the 1/2A guys are in the minority -- I'm the only one in my club that flies any 1/2A, although two other members do have a 1/2A plane.

NORVEL/SIG are cooking the same numbers -- if they can build X thousands of engines a year, how do they split the offerings? Bipe Flyer summed it up in an earlier post: Why buy an .049 when you can get a .061 Big Mig -- more power, good mid-range, no weight penalty. Does NORVEL build 10,000 .049's and 10,000 .061's or do they build 10,000 .061's and 10,000 .25's -- if I were making the business decisions, I would probably choose the latter. The same decision would be made with an .020 vs. a .25 -- basic economics: market potential, market share.

I've had several simple ultimates. used saito 30 in one, did o.k. my favorite engine was the bigmig 25 with a 9-4 prop. light, cheap, fast. the airplane does awesome blenders with this engine. change the strut mounting, the nyrod breaks. epoxy a long 4-40 bolt into the slot and sand the sides of head flat. inlay 1/16 ply pad on top of wing to keep locknut from crushing foam. otherwise mine were stock wings. made balsa rear fuse and doubler and cowl on my last one. pics on this site somewhere, you might do search.

Thanks for all the thoughts and info. I've got a Norvel .15 on order. If it isn't acceptable to me performance wise, the 28F will go in. It turned a 9X6 about 12,500 RPM on 10% fuel .

I'll check out the servo alternatives as I'm not familiar with the HS311 series. Off to the Hitec web site .
