Default New Foamy Help

I just made a faomy, the 'Nasty" from rc group plans for free!. My mom wont let me spend anymore than 30 dollars so I am improvising. The plane has a 38in wing span and I recently retired a parkflyer with a 45in wing span. I want to use the motor and batt from that so I can get a new servo and some other stuff. The motor is a 280 with a 2.5:1 gear ratio and the batt is an 8 cell 9.6v 650mah. I know the motor and batt are sub par for 3D but Im gonna give it a try. It most likely wont hover or anything but hopefully I can fly it around. I was wondering 1: will it fly 2: what prop, tha plans say a 11-12in prop, was thinking 11x5.5?

That plane cant way that much, use the servos from your old plane and get a cheap $6 micro motor with a simple $11 speed control if u cant find anything google it.

Well I had to get a new servo and some other things including a prop so I cant spend anymore[]hopefully it works. I ordered an apc 11x5.5 and an apc 10x3.8, you guys think these will get it to fly, have enough torqu for some manuevers? If not hopefully it will be able to fly around untill i get a more powerful bl motor and lipo batt.

Try running it a bit then stop and feel for excess motor or battery heat. (about 10 seconds at full throttle, and do it a number of times to be sure) If it's warm or hot anywhere cut some off the props tips till you get the heat down.

It's just to test if your prop is too much for the motor system. If any thing feels uncomfortably warm or you can't leave your finger on it then reduce the size of the prop. Then the props you already have can be used.
Nothing to do with, will it hover, more like will it burn up.

If the batt is very hot let it rest before another takeoff. When you get this thing put together tell me how it runs.

yeah I know what you are saying about the heat and the concern of blowing the motor, just asking if the motor has enough thrust with those props to hover or do other manuvers.

11x5.5 is way to much for 3d, 10x3.8 is good even maybe a 10x4.7.

^I disagree. I have used an 11x4.7 prop with similar sized foamies, and it provided unlimited vertical on a 180 watt power system.

My guess: the 280 motor will hardly fly it on those heavy 8 cell nixx batteries. You might be able to cruise around, but it's doubtful. A 3D model requires a lot of power, and lightweight power systems to fly well.

You really need to save up and get a more appropriate power system. Brushless outrunner with around 170-180 watts and draws about 14 amps is what you need, and a 20 amp controller with 3 cell 1000-1500 mah lipo. www.hobbycity.com has tons of motor systems that you can get for under $50. Also, they have towerpro motor/ESC combos for under $20. The included prop is too large though, so you will need to go down an inch or two (this is with all the towerpro combos).
