Default The new Lanier Edge 87"

http://www.lanierrc.com/lrcprivate/r...edge540arf.htm

Wing Span: 87”
Overall Length:83 ½”
Fuselage Length:61 3/4”
Wing Area:1447 ½ Sq. In.
Flying Weight:16 ½ to 18lbs.
Engine:50 to 80 cc
Radio:4 Channel & 9 Servos

PRICE: 500 clams

What do you guys think? Sounds like a winner to me. Same wing area (and hopefully wingloading) as those popular Yaks out there. I personally prefer an Edge / Extra over Yaks anyway . For only 500 dollars, it's a pretty good deal also.

In the past, has Lanier typically underestimate their weight? I know they have a reputation of being on the heavy side, but if the weight is anywhere around the advertised, this baby should be a floater.

Really? I think that the wing area and span is right on with everything else out there but other than that[:'(]

Compared to all the other planes out there it is like 2lbs overweight. Not to mention every other plane has only 1 aileron servo. You should only need one and if you need 2 the aileron is probably weak and if they build the aileron weak what about the rest of the plane?

Coming in at 16 1/2lbs is still a little bit heavy for the wing area and with a DA50 wich is probably what you need for that weight, it would probably be just a little underpowered. Lanier hasnt built any good light 3d ships like TOC Or EF or BME or Carden Or aeroworks ....

but maybe I am rong or maybe you just want to fly IMAC but $100 more is well worth it for a plane that is just as bbig and 2lbs lighter.

It is about time Lanier does something. The Extra looks good also. Both are nice color schemes. Says 50CC to 80cc. These planes have the same advertised wing area as the old 30% Lanier EDGE and are supposed to be 2 pounds less. Where did you see $500?

STG,
That's what it says on the FlyRC ads, and from the way it looks, it's got a complete hardware packages.
Banchee,
I didn't even notice that 9 servos deal, lol.
It lists at 16.5 (assuming DA50) - 18 lbs (ZDZ-Zenoah 80).
Most BME Yaks are well over 16 lbs... closer to 17-18 lbs, their Edge II around 17 lbs. EF Yaks are lighter, but WH Edges are around 17 lbs with Zenoah 62 (I've seen them higher than that). Please keep in mind also that these Edges are 3" shorter.
The WH Ultimate are about the same weight and surface area.

Bottom line, as long as they're conservative on the weight, it should be around the same ballpark

If I am correct they give you the option of using 2 servos on the rudder and maybe the wings as well.

My calculated wingloading
at
18 lbs 28.6 Oz/ft2
17 lbs 27.0
16 lbs 25.5

Not too shabby, though not super light either

Please keep us updated if someone buys one of these planes. I'd be interested in the quality. I have the 90" EDGE from Lanier and, overall, I have been happy. These new ARF's are coming from a different manufacturer that their past ones.

Just got an email from Tower Hobbies that they have both the Edge and Extra in stock. So, run out and buy one of each, then tell us what their like...

Looks like they have an 87" Yak in the works also [sm=lol.gif]

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LNLDE1&P=G

REQUIRES: Engine: 3.0 - 4.8 cu in (50 - 80cc) gasoline
Muffler:
Radio: At least 4 Channel
Servos: 8-9 (2-aileron, 2-rudder, 2-elevator, 1-throttle
Servo Extensions:
Y-Harness:
Spinner: " ( mm)
Misc. Items: 1/2" foam rubber padding, fuel tubing,
fuel filter, propeller, building and field equipment.

SPECS: Wingspan: 87" (221cm)
Wing Area: 1468 sq in (94.83 sq dm)
Flying Weight: 16.5-17.5 lb (7484 - 7938g)
Wing Loading: . oz/sq ft ( . g/sq dm)
Length: 84" (213cm)
Airfoil: (Fully- Semi-Symmetrical or Flat Botm), mid-wing
Center of Gravity: - / " ( mm) Back from the wing's leading edge
Control Throws- High Rate Low Rate
Elevator: Up & Down / " ( mm) / " ( mm)
Rudder: Right to Left / " ( mm) / " ( mm)
Ailerons: Up & Down / " ( mm) - / " ( mm)

Now if it had a true 1468in of wing area and came in at 17 pounds with a EV58 on tuned canister it would rock.

Peter
Post or post a link to them please.

I downloaded the instruction manual(Extra) from Lanier. They are running 2 rudder servos in the tail like some 33% H9 birds.

My 30% Lanier Edge uses a 705BB servo for the rudder. i used a bellcrank system, and it'll knife edge loop no trouble. I'll reserve my decision to use 1 or 2 servos for the rudder and ailerons until I decide what powerplant I might drop in. I have a ZDZ 50 NG on route, but I may steal a spare ZDZ 80 for it. The dimensions of the 87" Edge are very close to my 30% 90" Edge, and I use a ZDZ 80 in it...

Easier said than done for me. My showtime is down because I need the Saito repaired. I just crashed my 260, so I'm plane-less [:@]. I need a new home for my DA. My real fear with this one is if it comes out like a big pork and my DA is not enough to haul its ass.

I want to make sure that it'll last with 1 servo / wing also. 2 servos seem to be an overkill

With 2 servos in the wings and rudder it makes me wonder if this plane is bigger than the other 87"ers out there--full 1450inches(only in my dreams right)?

I see that they used a DA50 in the Extra. I called Lanier today to ask questions about this bird, but the tech guy (I think Wayne) was not available.

I have pictures of the Yak
Peter you said you had pictures of the yak. Can you post them or email them to me? Thanks

When you get the info, please post to this thread. Also please be sure to ask him if one servo per surface is an option.

My LHS, at my request got both the Edge and the Extra... No strings attached. They're coming this Tuesday, so I'll go there then, inspect them, and maybe go home with one of them
