Guys, everyone is right about those wheel pant collors, they will come apart. They are not soldered but glued [:'(]

I am lucky, mine came apart during engine testing on the ground, so no plane damage. I cleaned the surfaces up with the dremel and soldered them, and they seem to be pretty strong now.

Just a warning, if they haven't broke on you yet, THEY WILL.. fix 'em well you can...
Gonna vent a little bit here. [:@] [:'(]
These d**ned wheel pant attachments are a real PITA. This is something that should have taken about 90 seconds per wheel to attach, but one fell apart in my hands as I was tightening the mounting screws. I have tried everything I know to do to reattach the wheel collar (brass) to the metal plate. JB Weld, epoxy, clean the metal on both surfaces, solder with a torch several times, and I can't get the collar and plate reattached.
One of mine came apart during the build, but it was very easy to solder back with a 60 watt iron. It is doing well after lots of touch and go landings.

Probably worth replacing these wheel pant retainers with some similar sized Dubro giant scale wheel pant hardware of better quailty, though.

Beautiful. What engine and did you use? Also, where did you get the dummy engine?

kruzin 55,

I am using a YS-120. The dummy motor is from a GP PT-17 Stearman, it fits right in the cowl...

Hi every one this is my first post on this forum,I am a bit of a Waco lover I have built a couple of them .In my box of bits I have plans and templates for both the Pica 1/6 and 1/5 versions. Would any of you have experience with the Zenoah 20 cc electronic ign engine as far as installing one in either version .I would love to put it in the 1/5 version but not sure if it would have the power to pull it around O.K.I would be glad to here your thoughts.Roger (Australia)

Roger,

Jump over to the Vintage and Antique, Waco YMF thread (mostly The Pica Wacos, but all Wacos are welcome) and look in the index (page 1) for engines. There are quite a few choices now as guys have tried different engines. Remember, the Pica kit (originally a Dave platt design) is from the 70's and engines have changed. From the guys that fly either the Pica (kit or plans built) or the Cox Pica version, they seem to feel that the Zenoah 20 cc is on the low side of power and the G26 is about perfect.

The V & A Waco thread is pretty large, but there is a ton of info in there. One member has taken the Cox 1/5th Waco, stripped it down, added some scale details, corrected the wing tips and recovered it with Koverall. Its the Red and Cream one in the completed models section and has the G26 in it.

Good luck on your next build

Thanks for the advice much appreciated I thought it may have been a bit lacking in power I may try to fit it into the 1/6 version,it might be a tight squeeze though.

Highway Robbery at that price. It was overpriced at $369, the original price.

Here is the dummy engine in the one that I am building. The model is G-26 powered, and the dummy is scratch built using a hair spray can for the crankcase and the cylinders are from the Top Flite engine kit for 1/5th scale. The pushrod tubes are aluminum tubing, and the ignition manifold is aluminum tubing. Spark plugs are brass tubing, and the wires are just that. The cylinder bases are balsa. It was an enjoyable build.

Anyone wishing to become a member of the Waco Brotherhood is welcome. Just post in the WACO YMF thread that John mentioned. We are taking orders for Waco Brotherhood Tee shirts now too.

No support to be had now, for sure, from Cox.

I thought the original 379.00 price from Cox was about right, or perhaps a little high. My feeling was that it was definitely worth about 100-120 bucks more than the typical H9 warbird ARF, despite the few issues that the Cox kit had.

If the cowl had been right, and the landing gear properly soldered instead of welded and if the upper wing had been correctly built with the flat center section, it would have been well worth the money, I think.

still..Cox gets some credit for increasing the worlds supply of completed and flying radio controlled Waco models!..

I love mine!

I haven't heard a thing.
I got so fed up w/ mine because of the mess w/ the wheel pant attachments that I put it up a year or so ago. haven't even flown it. But have it out, think I've solved the pant attachment problem a real PITA! and am putting the last touches on it now.
Shouls maiden in a week or two...
But then if something, like the gear, breaks? Damifiknow!

Why is Cox not going to produce any more Wacos? 1/5, 1/6 ? Cox going out of business? []

First and formost, Cox/Estes is not really an R/C hobby company. They are (primarily) a flying toy company and prefer to fill up the toy aisles at many, many Walmarts as opposed to a fewer number of hobby shop shelves.

I have a feeling that the Pica ARFs were an experiment that did not reward them financially as much as their typical flying toy project and they are likely not going to repeat it....alsthough I do wish they would!

Cox does have some new and innovative stuff coming...but Pica arfs seem to be on pernament hold.

I recently acquired a brant new Cox/Pica Waco ARF built but no motor mounted from an estate sale. I electrified it with a large Turnigy motor on eight lite polly cells. Prop is 19/12 and ESC is a 70 amp unit from Hobbycity. Absolutely a beautiful flying machine at 14.5 pounds. I had seen Thomases bird fly last year at a meet in Ft Worth and fell in love with her and stumpled onto this one when a friend passed. He had two other big birds hanging from the ceiling that also were never finished. A Top Flite Staggerwing and a 84 inch Gee Bee Y. All were built but I chose only one although the other two were picked up by friends immediately. I happened to have all the hardware already available and it was soon up and flying. I have over 20 flights on her now and every one is a joy. What did I pay for her you may ask? How about $250.00 and tickled pink to do so. She is still in my van after a great afternoon at the field. ed

Ed,

Re-post your post over on the WACO YMF thread in Golden Age, Vintage and Antique RC. Be sure to include which size Waco (1/5 or 1/6) and what motor (part number or size) you used. I am interested (and I am sure others are) in going electric but know virtually nothing about them and would like to know more for the 1/5th Waco I am slowly building. Thanks.

After flying Master Scale for almost 30 years I fly now for myself. Flying wires and all the little nits are great but when having to assemble the bird each time I go to the field I feel they are overated. They add nothing to the flying capabilities and cannot be seen outside 20 feet. If I was back on the circuit you bet I would have them installed but for day to day flying I'll have to pass. I am a believer in the KISS principle and brought up on Murphy's Law. I currently fly three bipes and thats all my van can carry at once.

Does anyone think that a 40cc gasser would be too much for this 1/5 power wise? I have a Zenoah G26 but not sure how good the vertical would be. I've had this Pica/Cox ARF for 2 years and it's time to build. I flew in one at Marathon Key Fla. I fell in love. I bought the kit. If you have never had a ride in a Waco over the ocean at 400' altitude during a sunset, head for Marathon Key.

Steelie,

Yes, the 40cc will be to much. The 26cc is just about perfect for scale flight and will do loops with out a problem. It won't climb out of sight but nice hammerheads can be done. Fly it scale and you will be fine as there are not enough control surface area to even attempt any 3D BS.

I have had a few rides in Wacos (UPF & S3HD) but not over the keys at sunset. That would be way cool.

skylarkmk1,

Thanks for that reply. Take a look at the Sweetheart YMF I got a ride in. I was editing by uploading a couple pics in my last post. Hard to believe this airplane was severely damaged from a hurricane. Had to be shipped for restoration/rebuild 4 or 5 years ago. If you google her 'N' numbers you can see what she looked like before the hurricane.
