Irish: Is that a kit or built from plans? I like the lines of that plane.

This is a great plane.....I've built two of them and enjoyed them both. Each additional one I build I make some changes and the plane just keeps getting better. Maybe I'll build another one this winter....seems like there are just too many projects and not enough energy to get them all done.

Your PM arrived and I answered it, but I decided also to add my .02 cents worth here. Can't say enough about Dan Santich designed planes....too bad he isn't with us anymore to see how his designs have lasted forever. If you decide to build the Cobra, please keep us updated with narrative and pix.

And for anybody else out there thinking of building this bird, it's definitely worth the time and effort...not only is it a great flyer, it just simply captures everybody's attention when they see it. The full size bird started out in San Diego by Dr. Sydney White, who flew it in the Reno Races and won first time out. His plane was named the Sundancer. Another fellow in Van Nuys built one with the gear in the wings (Santich's plans are the same); and he put winglets on the wing tips. It was now renamed the Cobra. It was a midget Mustang fuse with the wings attached to the fuse. When Dr. White entered the race, the officials told him a bipe MUST have an interplane strut, so he went to the local hardware store and bought some conduit for the strut! His plane was showcased in the San Diego air museum for years; and I think it still is there, but not too sure.

Good luck
Steve

P.S.
On your RCU poop sheet, there's a Corvette in the background...is it yours? I'm presently driving a 2006 C6 black on black....it's my seventh Vette over the years. Got my first '59 in '60 from a neighbor and have been hooked ever since.

Thanks for the reply

This is my 2nd vette. 1st one was 62 and this one is the first of the C-4 1984 350 crossfire. Love it.

Doesn't say in the description on MAN's site what size engine is this built for?? I'm guessing a 60-ish size 2 stroke???

It says 2+ so I would think a 1.20 or bigger. Maybe one of the nice little gas engines we have these days. I would be thinking my RCS 1.40 gasser, that's only 22cc but very high performance. I also have a nice YS 1.20 that isn't doing anything at the moment. Just waiting for a new ring and a valve job.

the article says a twin 50cc was used. I was looking at a 50 size also. However, I have a 180 4 stroke looking for a home.

I'm pretty old school so my thinking is on size. The plane I just built is an 80 inch and it's a light weight, it calls for a 1.20FS. To me 80 inches is where I go to my 2.4 40cc gas engine. The cobra is a pretty big plane with two wings and calls for 2+. I'm betting your 1.80 would work very well if you keep the weight down. Now I know why you werre asking about the 50 twin. I do like the DLEs and the cylinders would look cool sticking out of the cowl.

goirish,
Sorry about the lost PM...it's all covered in my post here except for info on the cowl....it came from Fiberglass Specialties and it's listed under Dan Santich's Cobra....It has large cheek cowls and would house your twin 50 just fine.

Gray Beard,
Engine size is about 50cc on up...the first one I saw was a Tartan twin (about 50-60cc) at the QSAA in the early 80's...my first one had a G62, second one had a ZDZ80....the DLE55 is a perfect choice I think.

My bench might just get a good cleaning so that I could join y'all in a winter build of the Cobra.

Hey we can all meet at GrayBeard's and fly our Cobra's. Dinner is on him of course. I did contact Fiberglass spec. and ask them to send a picture of the cowl and canopy. Did you change the size of the fuselage. I think I will order them both. Hope they fit the plans.

Irish,

I stretched the fuse about 1.5-2.0" from cockpit to tail feathers (on Coba II), but the canopy and cowl fit perfectly to the plans.

Would be a blast to meet Gray Beard in NV, but his flying field at the Eldorado Dry Lake Bed is pretty small....it's only 20 square miles as I remember it. The Eldorado Valley Flyers headquartered in Boulder, NV fly there and Gray Beard may already be a member of their club.

The QSAA held their annual fly-in there for years and years before they broke up. Too bad...its was a great event and probably one of the original 1/4 scale events anywhere. I'm game to meet anybody there...anytime...bring your COBRAS!!

Other people seem to have the same idea Gene. Today it's brunch and on my tab. Funny, when I lived on a mountain out in the woods I never had a lot of people show up for a visit?? I'm sure I could find a place to take you to dinner. May even know where there are a couple of shows you would like.
I do happen to fly from the best maiden spot I have ever seen. 7 sq. miles of flat. Plenty of room for a couple of Cobras.
I sort of build around what engines and gear I have on hand. I jump from the 40cc to the G-62 then right up to a 100 twin. I really would like to have that DLE 50 twin on hand, I would settle for the DLE 55 but I do like the twins.

MAN has reduced the price of Cobra plans to $17.48 plus $3.99 shipping....my plans are so beat up that I ordered a new set.
Now, if I could just order some "get-up-and-go" I'd be in great shape!

Gray Beard,

I know what you mean about "visitors" when you live in Las Vegas...one of my business partners lived there years ago; and the "visitor" problem got so bad he actually installed an outside entrance to his mother-in-law apartment and gave his visitors the code to the locks.

My son now lives in Eldorado Heights (north north north Las Vegas by the Alliante Hotel and Casino) and he always seems to have somebody staying with him. He's close to the north las Vegas flying field actually, just about as far north from you in Henderson as one can get and still be in the Vegas valley.

When we came to the QSAA every year, we stayed at the Railroad Pass Casino and Hotel...glad they refurbished it over the years....it's OK now that they did. The Eldorado valley flyers have some of their meetings there don't they?

We, too, have some dry lake beds, but they are just "baby puddles" compared to yours. What a great place to fly!

I have a house with a Casita but that's my shop. I started to make my guest room into a den but my wife put the breaks on that idea. With all the hotels in the area why can't I have a den?? OK some of the friends I really do like to see. Most of them used to stay on the strip {where the action is!} but now with the rates up as high as they are they seem to like my place a lot more?
That club is out of Boulder, they have a field but most of them fly off the lake bed. There meetings are usually on the LB too. During the winter months a lot of us meet up and eat breakfast at the Rail Road Pass. During the week anyway. Locals, we know when the deals are on.
I go to the North field about once a year for the IMAC event. I still get lost trying to find it. That area keeps getting built up and I loose my markers for getting off the hiway. It even fools with the GPS system.
When in town other then looking around don't bother with the new Cosmo, really high prices and crap for service.
