Prop for LT-40 with .56 Saito
I finally got a chance to put the maiden on my son's LT40 today. It flew great and had plenty of power but with no wind to help it really floated on landings. The .56 Saito is new but has 40 min of break in plus two flights on it but the idle is pretty low. I am using a 12x6 APC on it now. I know Kadets are know as floaters and it didn't surprise me but I think a different prop might be better. Its no problem at the field we were at today but one of the places we go is a little tighter and I would like to try a different prop to add a little more drag and get rid of the excess idle thrust. I know from flying 3D planes that a 4 inch pitch prop really helps. Would a 12x4 be too small? How about a 13 X4? I have the clearence for it. Let me know what you all think.

RVator, In my opinion you already have the best prop for that engine on that plane. A 12x4 would not be enough load and let the engine over rev. You could always try the 13x4. Experimenting is part of the fun of this hobby. You should have a tach and that engine/prop should have a 2,000/2,100 idle or maybe just a little lower and that should act as a brake and not pull the plane at all. I've flown the LT-40 with a 52 4-stroke and a 12x6, and several other trainer type planes with the Saito 56/12x6 and it is a very good combo. You might check and make sure that your c/g is not too far forward as a plane that is too nose heavy tends to land faster than a plane that is balanced at the back of the c/g range.

I have to agree with Fred, and just to let you know, you have to slow it down for landing before you make the first turn to final. Otherwise, you just have too much speed. If you have good throttle management, a 12 x 4 may do. Likewise, you may find the 13 x 4 better, just don't expect too much from the motor, and expect the revs to get to where they were, it wont do it, and you can ruin the motor by trying to lean it to get there. Truely, the 12 x 6 shouldn't be a problem, but like Fred said, you can experiment, just be careful. The plane will float, no matter what prop you run. I slow mine down way in advance, and bring the throttle up one or two clicks to stretch the landing / glide slope out. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I really do like the way it flys. Its a better flyer than my stick 40 trainer was. I also think this is a good time to finally learn how to do foward slips to landings. Flying Ultra Sticks with flaps down or crow will ruin your landing skills. That thing could almost land in a well . I will also try a 13 x4 and see how the engine pulls it.

Try a 13" prop which gives you the same RPM as the 12x6. Should have more pull, less speed. Get a 13x4 and 13x5 and try them.

I did a little prop testing at home this afternoon. The 12x6 apc turned 10500 on 15% morgan fuel. A 13x4 apc turned 10,200 and a 13 x4W apc did 9900. It really seemed to pull the harderst. Now to try it at the field this Sunday afternoon and see which one works best.

Have to agree. I have one on my 80" Sig Kadet Sr. and love the combo! I fly the 12x6 MAS on that one and don't even bother to change props when I switch to floats.
