S thunder tiger 91 2 stroke would give you the best bang for your buck, they have been compared to OS engines and although they have a slightly lower preformance spec, it isn't by much and the reliability is second to none, and as I said you can't beat the price
My TT .91 will outperform my old Surpass .91, perhaps on par with the newer Surpass. The manufacture power specs are meaningless, and OS numbers are very inflated. I don't recommend it for a beginner because of the long break in. Probably even longer than a Saito.

After thinking about this, if you want a cheap two stroke then try the Tower .75, a little more then the Fox .74 its stronger and will last a lot longer both are about the size of a .60. Four stroke, well for a beginner I suggest the OS or Magnum .91. The OS is more user friendly and better built. Saito's and others take longer to break in but last longer. IMO a .91 two stroke is too large for most beginners in this plane.

The 1.20ax is ALOT of motor, my 12LB sig four star will go vertical with it...that 1.20 on the 60 stick is a serious over kill...

Any thoughts of an OS 120AX? It's $10 less than the OS 95AX. If i'm going to spend the money on a 95AX, would the 120AX be a viable alternative?
The 120Ax is a really sweet engine, but it has 60% more power than most .60's. Won't it be a little over the top?
Anyway, I have a 120AX and I start it by hand, usually by twisting the spinner backwards. This causes a kick forward and Brrrmmm, away she purrs.
I too run a 120ax in my gb ultimate. It is a lot of power but that is what the left tumb stick is for, besides you can run 5 or 10% in it to dial it down or put a larger lower pitch prop on it. There are guys swinging 17" props on it. 120ax Best bang for the buck and it is not much heavier than a 91fx. an once or 2...

Why bother with a 91 when u can get a 120 for 20-30 more dollars?

I also use magnums. I had a 91 (4 cycle) in my twist 60 and on 15% the power was terrible but after I burned her in with a few galons I switched to 30% heli. lol LOADS of power! She ran better too, tranisioned better, back fired less if at all.

My appoligies, if you are a beginner. A 120ax would be hard to handle if your not use to power management.

i have a 2ed stik thats not done, but i just got a O.S. 90 with a pitts that i will use next spring. anyone know of a good prop that i should start with?
thanks, tony
Tony,

I have an OS 91 FX on my goldberg tiger 60 and I started out with a 14-8. That didn't give me the speed I wanted so I went to a 14-6. That gave me more speed but not unlimited vertical. I then stuck a 13-8 on it and I now have unlimited vertical and a plane that flies like a bat out of H???. My tiger weighs close to 9 lbs.

So, since your big stick 60 weighs about 6 1/2 lbs by the specs I seen, I would go with the 14-6 prop. Hope this helps.

I beleive OS engines over rate the horse power listed in their specs more than super tigre engines do.

But IMO, the sound super tigre engines put out with those big bulky mufflers are somewhat annoying to my ears! Plus the mufflers have a tendency to fall off unless they are secured on very well. And you can almost guarantee the disc like baffle on the inside of the muffler will come loose and start rattling and when it does, it's a devil to get out.

Thanks for everyone's replies. After much debate, I decided on the OS95AX. I just purchased it from Tower a few minutes ago. They're running a great deal with $60 off $300 or more. I also got a prop and a bunch of other misc tools (new engine mount, dead center hole locator, taps, tap handle, etc) that's been on my wish list and the total only came out to $269.00!

I thought about a 91 Surpass, but didn't want to spend the $300 plus on the engine alone. Can't wait to get the 95AX installed on the Stik 60.

Sounds like a good match.

A LOT of excesss power, but not too much weight.

You'll want to put your battery packs as far BACK as possible, so make sure you get some extensions.

Also consider getting a large oversized battery.

I'm using a 4800mAh or so pack as far back as I can stuff it.

I can fly the plane all weekend long on one charge.... so the weight of the pack serves two postive functions.

Even with this extra weight, I'm usually the last one remaining, doing dead stick loops during fun flies, competing against other Stiks, thanks to the thick wings.

Good to hear Denver!

That ought to make your stick really scream! And that's the only way to buy from tower using that $60 off on a $300 order! That means 20% off everything you buy! I just finally broke down and even got me a Futaba 6EX 2.4 after using 4 channel radios for the last 37 years! lol

Ya might as well spend all your money at tower before the stock market takes it all!

opjose - thanks. With my old SK90 engine, i would have problems with a dead stick, similar to the person that posted the same issue with his Funtana 50. I cut and pasted your reply to my email for quick reference.

Basically, when i would go vertical, the engine would run fine. But when I throttled back from full to say mid throttle while the model was in vertical position, the engine would stall. I checked the tank and did a presure test and it was fine. But just in case, I ordered a new plug and stopper kit for the tank. I'll switch out all the fuel lines too.

Bigdan: complete agree. The only reason i went for a $280 dollar OS engine was because of the $60 off discount at Tower. Plus I sold some other stuff on craigslist (old engine, my nexstar trainer, etc) to help offset the cost. I haven't made the jump to 2.4 yet. I'm still using my Hitec Focus 6 FM radio with the standard servos that I bought 10 years ago! And you know what? It still works great. I love the radio even though the only features on it are rate adjustments and servo reversing.

I've never had any problems with my Futaba S3004 standard servos in my 60 size planes. Who knows, my Futaba 4 channel radios work so well, my Futaba 6EX 2.4 I just ordered might sit on the shelf for a while just like my Futaba 6EXP is doing at the present time!

I know one thing, my 4 channel basic radios will fly my planes just as well as any computer radio will.

I don't worry about getting shot down because me and about 3 other folks are the only ones using 72mhz. EVERYONE has moved over to 2.4. I'll do it eventually, but would rather spend the money right now on reliable engines and part first.

Where do you fly? I have been to some of the flying fields around Colorado. Sounds like you will have plenty of power!

I have a Futaba Challenger that I bought in 1983 and I still prefer its feel to the T7 FASST that I bought the other year. I MUCH prefer the mechanical trims because of the speed and the tactile position feedback (You can tell where the trim is with your finger!).
There's a lot of 35MHz used at our club still, but there's a "triangle of doom" for 35MHz sets that 2.4GHz flies through without any problems (so far!). Maybe it's the top-secret radar test site just a mile away that's the problem. Who knows? It's a secret.

I use 1/4 inch hardwood with epoxy and nylon screws with
blind nuts. JMO

1/8 ply will be too thin with the blind nuts. Go with 1/4 ply and you can use the same screws that came with the ARF to mount the landing gear. Just make sure to reinforce the ply because the balsa on the bottom of the fuselage is VERY thin. I used triangle stock and lots of epoxy.
