Mike,

Do you happen to recall whether the TE of the BA stab is tapered toward the tip or is it constant?

In other words, if one were to loft a set of stab ribs for a framed up stab, would the ribs look more like those to the left or the right in the drawing below?

This is Mike's thread but the trailing edge is tapered. The ailerons are a challenge to cut as they are double tapered.

How are the ailerons difficult to cut from the skinned foam cores? Isn't the taper and all that taken care of at core cutting time?

Or maybe Dan provided the cores with a balsa TE and aileron - been a while since I checked these threads...

The cores are only cut for the wing. The ailerons are all balsa, double tapered by getting narrower and thinner towards the ends.

Right, of course. My mind was dancing around a bit and was thinking about Aurora foam core ailerons in a BA thread...

I was looking at an old set of hand annotated BA60 plans and they seem to show that the stab TE is tapered toward the tip but not as strongly as shown in my "symmetrically" scaled down rib drawings. I measured the root rib TE and 0.45" and the tip rib at 0.40". Does this translate well to the skinned finished stab? That would be a root of 0.575" and a tip of 0.525" assuming 1/16" balsa is used to sheet the top and bottom of the stab. This would also imply that the elevators would have to be built using wood thicker than 0.5" for the portion close to the hinge line - make sense?

What is kind of interesting is the cord of the ailerons is the same from the root to the tip. This creates a bit of a challenge as they progress out toward the wing tip because the wing is double tapered. The Speeda is the same but the wing tip is thinner making the fit a bit easier.

I don't remember any problem about the aileron thickness with my BA, as I remember the rear spar was constant thickness. Same with the tailplane/elevator spar. I think that as the aileron and elevator are constant chord, they become a greater portion of the tapering section of the wing/tailplane, and that the sections chosen for root and tip mean that, for reasons of simplicity, the aileron and elevator thickness at root and tip just happen to be the same. I remember my Taurus and Superstar being much the same...I think that perhaps some are making things a bit more difficult than they actually are...

I'm trying to gleam into the difficulty in shaping the aileron LE thickness but failing to find one. But I haven't built one nor have I seen the ailerons supplied in an MK BA60 kit.

However, the fact that the TE spar on the wing and stab are constant height (I'll call it height as the thickness or width should technically be the dimension of the spar in the chord wise direction), doesn't necessarily imply that the resulting TE is also constant height. This of course would be the case where the spar is bonded to the ribs, the sheeting butted up against the spar and then the spar sanded down to sheeting level. Problem is, most MK kits are not designed to be built that way and instead have the TE spar covered by the sheeting. Unless the constant height spar is sanded down to rib airfoil before sheeting, this would yield a constant height surface TE.

The old version of the BA plans I was looking at (there seem to be a few different revisions) actually show the tapered dimensions of the stab TE spar and I wanted to confirm if the newer plans from which Mike and David built from produced an equivalent stab height along the TE.

that does help - thanks for the photos.

However, the formers at the end of the document don't seem to correspond to the modern BA60 plans former requirements. Is your PDF a mix of two different MK kits possibly? Or perhaps this is all together a different model? Maybe a different size BA?

Also, do you have the stab rib templates?

Yes, these are for a smaller kit: the ribs are for a Blue Angel Jr. (.40 - .45 engine size).

I suspect that the pattern is similar although I have not seen the ribs for a .60 size engine.

Idon't have the stab rib templates either.

Mike, you are correct, the wing is a double taper not the aileron. It was still a challenge though.

Thanks for the dimensions. I take it the numbers need to have their decimal place moved over to the left one place to yield the height of the parts in inches?
