Weed Eater: Rear Carby....which is it?
Hi,
I picked up a Weed Eater brand wacker at a G sale for 3 bucks this weekend. I pulled it all apart to find it has a rear carby... It looks very, very close to a Ryobi!
Anyone know what this engine is (not the featherlight????)... The reed vavle is on a plastic backplate, just like the Ryobi...Any chance this is the same engine? The front housing is diffent, but the rear seem very similiar.
Thx for the help in advace!
Tim

Weedeater brand uses different engines and different configurations. the one with the carb on the end is Ryobi. Used to own a small engine shop till I retired.

No, that's not what I'm saying.
WeedEater® does not use exclusively Ryobi engines, nor exclusively Poulan. Which model and rev# of string trimmer you buy, will determine what engine you get.
The "Featherlite" models I've seen in the store seem to be Poulan, and my non-Featherlite engines are also Poulan.
Here's my Poulan 25cc WeedEater® before and after the crash broke off the coil mount:

I agree, it sounds like yours is a Ryobi design.

I have a Weed Eater 21 that looks just like the picture. It has a side carb. I saw it sticking up out of a trash can along side the road. I have two others that are still being used as originally intended.
I took some pliers and broke the fins off the flywheel. Then I cut the rest of the fins off with a die grinder and carbide cutter. I balanced it on a Robart High Point Balancer. It looks neat enough.
I used a hub and rear mount from Carr Precision. I used a Homelite 25 carb on it.
IDC (Ryobi) Now a part of MTD has engines in many different brands of weed whackers. Most of them are the rear carb variety.
My Ryobi airplane engine began life as a Lawn Boy for its first 15 yrs.
Enjoy,
Jim

I did it pretty similar to the way Jim described it - I took a very fine carbide cutter and cut the blades off at their roots. I made a temporary contraption which allowed me to spin it on a prop balancer to ensure I had it mounted straight, and to check for balance while I spun it as fast as I could by hand.
I figured since I would use it in a non-cowled configuration, I didn't need the flywheel thrashing the air away from the cooling fins, and it saved a bit more weight. My 25cc Poulan weighed EXACTLY 3 Lbs with flywheel, prop adapter, prop, and engine mount. I never finished the muffler prior to the crash.

Weed Eater: Rear Carby....which is it?
I have the same question as the guy at the top. My Weedeater dti 16 has a rear mount carb, spark plug at bottom -- and I can't figure out what kind of engine it is and the cc. Any ideas?

Welcome to RCU
It sounds like you too have a Ryobi engine. We'll need more info to tell you the displacement though.
If you can measure the cylinder's inside diameter and stroke, then you can calculate the displacement. Make all your measurements in centimeters, to get cc's.
Displacement = (Diameter / 2)² X 3.1416 X Stroke

One alternative: take the engine to a "small engine" repair shop, where they are experienced in working with lawn mower, chain saw, and weed whacker engines.
Another alternative: I suggest you search the forums (use advanced search to select specific discussion forums) for anyone else who has experienced the same problems you are having. If you can't find anything which helps, start a new thread here describing your engine, and the problems you are experiencing. I'm sure someone will be able to help.
