Here is a shot of my Stihl 32cc 4-stroke. As shown without a muffler it weighs 1.95 kg (4lb 4oz). I hope I can fire it up tomorrow.

Well, it looks like it would weigh less than my Honda GX31, but that is about what mine weighs. Of course I am not using the magneto, I'm using CDI ignition.

Good luck on your test run,

Thanks jtisch

I will be following your conversion as I would like to put two 36cc ones in a twin.

Adrian, do you have any dimensions on the 36? I would guess that it's a bored out 28/32, but one never knows. I haven't been able to find a 36 at a decent price. The 32 as I have it now is about 13cm (5-1/8" ) from the shaft CL to the top of the cylinder.

I plan to do a couple of these 32s with EI so we will see what they weigh. As I build mostly WWI AC I don't really care so much about weight as you don't find too many nose-heavy WWI AC. I do like the easy starting/hand flipping with the EI, though. These 32s are much more compact than the Honda. I have a GX35 and it is bigger than my Stihl 65cc!

Probably weigh a pound less if you cleaned the dirt off it.

I did notice it looked kind of "dirty" in the pic I posted, but in real life it doesn't look that bad. The engine casings on these are magnesium, and at least for me they don't "clean up" as well as others. BTW, you should have seen these engines when I first received them!!

jitsch

I haven't got my hands on one yet but as you say they are a bit pricey and second hand ones are rare as rocking horse #### .
So can't help with any measurements but will be following your conversion with interest as I would love to build a twin with these 4 strokes.
I reckon the sound would be music to my ears .
At the moment I am flying a plane with twin ryobi's which isn't bad but 4 strokes just sound so much better.

A twin would be nice, but these single lobe cam engines don't run counter rotation. So you would have to run both engines the same direction.

Although that would be one heavy engine,it would also be a great accomplishment if completed.I think he is referring to [build a twin] meaning an airplane with 2 single engines, one on each wing.
Since hes running twin ryobis on one right now.
In order to do it youd have to have 2 engines side by side. Both of these engines would need a gear on them and then a center shaft with a gear on it.
That way the right hand engine[turning ccw] would turn the center gear [cw],wich in turn would turn the left engine gear [ccw,as normal].Might have to make a drawing of that sentence.

Ah I see usually twin engine air planes have one engine each wing.

However a twin as you suggest isn't possible, becouase you can't run the single lobe four stroke cycle engines in counter rotation.

I knew id have to draw a picture. You can use 4 sroke engines mounted in such a way as to have them turnning there same direction by using a center shaft with a gear that the prop would run on.As said,a twin would be configured as in post #12.
How about a 5 cylinder radial using just OS 4 Stroke engines.Nothing done to the engines.Check out the pic, then go to the thread and watch the video of this beast running. That will prove my point.I am going to make a twin like this as soon as i find 2 low priced,4 stroke glow motors then im going to convert them to gas.
I am also in the process of finding 3 -2 stroke engines the same size to build a 3 cylinder radial.Pretty easy.

I've been caught up with financial stuff (tax time here) plus the weather here is still bad. It snowed again here yesterday. Anyway I bought some fresh gas and have a couple 32s ready to go. Maybe this weekend.

Well,
The first one fired right up. Stock carb and muffler on magneto with a 20x8 prop. It was so quiet I wasn't sure it was firing, but it was. As is usual for the 4-strokes I have done before the stock carb was far too lean. I couldn't get full high end without some choke even with the high end needle set fully rich. I will start working on manifolds for a different carb.

Good one!!
The propane tank is just for ballast on the test stand. The "real" fuel tank is visible just above it.

Looking good wonder what it would be like with a header pipe, bet it would sound good.
jitisch do you think that the standard carb won't be any good?

I have a larger 4 stroke Stihl.
It doesn't run well with out the choke on either.

Ralph at rcign, said to put a restrictor plate under the carb.
For mine, one with a 3/8 hole in it.

It doesn't make it run perfect but it does make it run well.

Also some back pressure would help out also.

On my 65cc Stihls I put on a straight pipe and will probably do the same for the 32s. I just don't have the right size alum tube right now. I also replaced the stock carb with a Walbro(again on the 65s). I will probably do the same with the 32s. You could probably get the stock one to work, but it is on the bulky side size-wise and won't fit in the 26cm diameter cowl like I want, so I will change it for that reason. I'll go through my box o' carbs to see what I have that might work.

I have some 10.5mm WYK carbs on them. I tried a 15mm carb but that was too big. There is a 13.5mm WYK but I am not convinced I would get anymore RPMs with that. With the 10.5, it runs sweet from idle to top end. Is there an 8 or 9mm WYK? I think that may be good for the 32.
