I just received my Balsa USA stingray 120 and it looks like the Ryobi engine will fit this kit real nicely. The firewall will have to be moved back about 3" from the plans, but that should not be a problem. The Ryobi has the carb at the rear of the engine that makes it a little longer than the others out there. By moving the firewall back 3" this will put the extra weight of the engine closer to CG. I plan on putting the servo's for the elevator and rudder to the rear of the fuselage, this will also help out with the CG. The gas tank will have to be installed under or close to where the wing mounts to the fuselage. By doing all of this I hope the CG will not be a problem. The plane weighs just under 9 lbs built and the Ryobi weighs 4 lbs making the bird about 13 lbs. She has a wing area of 1276 sg in and an 83" wing span. I believe this will make a good flying combination.

I put mine in a 120 size Diabolo. I don't know who made the kit but it is an ARF with a 70 " wingspan. I just weighed it (on my bathroom scale-not too accurate but...)and it came in at a tick over 9 lbs. I am new to gassers but the engine is new and with a 16x8 prop I'm hoping it will be a good performer with a fair bit of vertical. Can anyone offer their opinion on what I can expect for performance? Thanks!

Hi there!

I used 2 STROKE glow fuel in a weedeater conversion,its a Poulan ,probably 21 or 31 cc.Not only did the rpm rise enormously,it was also smooth and the engine ran with the ignition off!(Only need the ign for start) Havent installed it on a plane yet. But has anyone of you guys tried it yet? I would appreciate a feedback.

Qadri: Place a glow plug in your engine and throw away that heavy ignition system. Make or buy a glow plug adpter. I will be runing a 30cc Homelite soon on glow. Very lite!!! Thanks Capt,n .... PS 5% or no nitro will work with far less oil than glow fuel has in it.

Mine is on a Bandito Grande. Had to move the firewall back 3 1/4" to balance with no led. Weighs in at 13 lbs 14.5 ozs. Did some other mods, can see it in the pic. All in all I like it a lot. This plane will be my test bed when I convert the others.

This is my Ultra SPAD Stick with a Ryobi 31cc engine. It flys like a great big trainer. In the process of converting a Homie 45cc chain saw engine. I'm told that with that engine, I'll have all the verticle I can handle.

Personally myself...The whole idea of burning the sky all day long and burn fuel for total of $1.15 is what makes me wanna have a gasser conversion.You dont need a special 'erl' and cheapest gas will do.Plus if you don't have an electronic ignition-thats even cheaper.Couple of days ago i bought a roybi 31 cc with broken pull-rope for $15.That should be easy conversion.

My converted Ryobi 28 is in a Balsa USA 1/4 scale Cub. The thing weighs 17 lbs, and I've only flown it once, but the take-off roll was short, and it flew about in a very pleasant Cub-like manner. Negative verticals only.;)

I'm building a Bridi Big Bee for my Honda GX25. I must have gotten the last Big Bee from Sheldon's about 2 weeks ago, I tried to order another 3 days later, and they were out. Every single piece of wood in this kit was solid, Ribs, bulkheads, fuse sides, hatch, etc. I spent some time with a router and dremel cutting holes in everything. I've heard they fly real well even over 15 lbs, so I hope I'll have a floater, and the Honda won't be pulling it around like a G62.

what do you think i should put my 18cc poulan weedeater engine on? i was thinking either a stinger 60, a laser 1/4 scale, or a GP super skybolt. what do you recommend? what is the power of my engine compared to? this is my first conversion. any other suggestions

i didnt quite understand how to do this and i rushed it. i completely shaved off the fins on the flywheel. all thats left is the magnet and anoter chunk of metal on the other side. i think i screwed up. will the engine run with no fins? i cant start it right now becase i dont have a conversion kit yet so i cant attach a prop.

I completely removed the fins on several of mine. After breaking the fins off, I cut them down with a die grinder and smoothed off where they were. I then balanced the flywheels.

Here's mine:

1: A Bud Nosen Champ, 100"+ span, 14#, 26cc Ryobi 4-stroke, APC 18-8W, C&H ignition, good slow relaxing flyer, unlimited verticle(not really, hell not even close).

2: Hanger 9 Funtana 46, 56" span, 6.25#, Echo 21cc, RC Ignitions, haven't flown yet, people said this couldn't be done!

3: Scratch designed/built Dornier DO-18, 96" span, 20?#, Ryobi 31cc, MA 16-10, taxi tested but too heavy to fly, sold

I would keep the air flowing fairly fast over the Funtana,s wings most all the time. If you go to land make sure the speed is enough. If you have to go around...do not punch the throttle to hard at one or it may tourque into the ground. Because of not much wing area verses torqe of engine!!!! Try testing that stuff at high altitude. Good luck....Capt,n

The picture is of a test to determine vibration levels and strength of wing mounted firewall. It gives a vague idea of the madness. It is not pretty.
