RE: What do you have your conversion in???

I agree with everything you said, except for two things...

One, we found in our experiments with ultralight aircraft that the shielding was more effective when it was grounded on only one end; not both. This has also been my experience with model airplane ignition engines.

Also, I don't particularly recommend PCM for gas ignition engines as they can mask interference problems until it's too late. If you want to fly PCM, thoroughly test the system for glitches first with PPM.

ok sounds good i just got the prop adapter made up tonight got it drilled and threads in it drilled the center prop bolt for a spinner i put it all on the scales and i am a bit concerned about plane and engine weight i dont know what i should shoot for with the cap 232 and 73" span im at 13.2 give me some opinions guys

i did try fm first and had all sorts of problems....i thought switching to pcm would cure the problem which it didnt. and so i then thought that if super tigre can get a 45cc engine to work on a glow plug then so could i.........and the rest is history as they say lol.

and yes wiz....you CAN lose the ignition system too lol.

ps....i hope you got everything tied down tight wiz.....bit windy over there i hear

Never tied anything down mate. Its all to wet to blow away. :D
Finished the Christen today while I was stuck inside. its a sweeeeeeeeeeeet bit of gear. :D knock up a muffler and fly it. I bet you can't guess what I'm going to do tomorrow.

I am flying a Ryobi 31, Bowman rings (2), CH ignition in a SIG FourStar 120 kit bashed into a ME-109.

The motor runs stronger every time I fly it. Sweet.

Hey man...that bash job on that sig 120 into a ME-109 sure came out nice. I love flying off the pavement like in the photo. How do you like the Ryobi? Did you change much on the engine? Best Regards Capt,n:D SOME FUN!!!

RE: What do you have your conversion in???

I need a little advice from some of the more experienced members here. I would like to know a few rules of thumb regarding the right size planes to put these conversions in. I like flying over-powered and I am convinced that the gas / glow conversions are the way to go due to the weight reduction and elimination of the large rotating mass associated with the flywheel.

My first conversion will be a Ryobi 31cc. Is this too big for 120 sizes sport planes (Yak, Extra, Giles) ?
My next conversion will be a Poulan 38cc. I'm thinking maybe a 80" UltraStick might be a good choice.

Are there any guidelines you use (ie wing area, wing loading, etc...)?
Most manufacturers recommend engine ranges in both 2 and 4 cycle displacements. Do you apply some conversion factor to determine applicability of these gas / glow conversions?

Thanks for your comments and suggestions

Hey Captinjohn,

All I changed on the Ryobi was the use of a CH ignition, and dual Frank Bowman rings. Here are some more photos. I also moved the firewall back on the fuselage.

The cowl and spinner, decals and canopy are from SkysharkRC.

Greetings guys.
This is my latest conversion engine. 45cc chainsaw, Chinese No Name Brand. Paid $130AU + postage. Not bad really.
Was a bit of a gamble as I had no idea if it was going to be any good. It was a bit sad chopping up a brand new chainsaw
that had never been started. Plane is an ESM Katana 2m and weights around 14-15lbs.

These are some early shots of the the engine install before muffler and carby manifold was made and fitted.

Cheers KMM:D

Ok, here she is, install completed and ready to run. I'm pretty happy with it. Made up my own carby adaptor out of
aluminium as the carby mounts are lost when cutting the cases up. Decided to put a canister muffler, with header
pipe on it as the fuse is made for this setup. Bought a KS canister and a header pipe kit as they were easily obtained.
Header pipe kit comes with 3 90 deg bends and a couple of straight pieces so you can braze or weld it to almost any shape.

After running it a few times, had to beef up the engine box as it nearly tore it off the firewall. I didn't know whether to
take that as a good sign or bad one:eek:. Was it the super engine pull or was it a S%#ty ARF. After beefing up the engine
box I gave it a few more runs and the pull felt very strong. I have a 20 x 10 Bambula wooden prop on it turning @ around
7000. Not too shabby. So I stuck it on my fish scale and she pulled 21lbs:D. Should fly it very nicely but until I fly it for
real I won't get too excited. :)

Cheers KMM

Thats niiiiice dude. :D Where did you get the exhaust kit and prop adapter from......and cost?. I really need the exhaust to adapt mine before I can fly it.

you know that cylinder looks A LOT like a crrc cylinder. and its 45cc too.....what do you think wiz??. im STILL working on my new muffler system....got the basics sorted but now the fun bit is trying to get it all together lol.

will post the pix when im done

RE: What do you have your conversion in???

It certainly has that look about it. crankcase is pretty different though. has the same velocity stack as the V2 as well. :D

RE: What do you have your conversion in???

ive noticed there is 2 switches on the same side as your ignition module. im wondering if one of them is for your radio gear and the other for your ignition system.

if this is the case then you will more than likely have the ignition cut through your radio gear. keep your radio gear as far away from ANYTHING related to your ignition system to avoid problems.

I think one of those looks like a charging jack to me..

WarbirdMadMan 01-05-2007 11:13 PM

RE: What do you have your conversion in???

Spot on cdale03 the second is a charging jack;).

Wiz, the canister and header kit I got from Ian Howard at Desert Aircraft Australia. Really nice guy.
Check out his Website and go to the DA Shop for all the gear. Here's the link

http://www.desertaircraft.com.au/Contents.htm

As for the prop hub, engine mount, carby manifold, pickup ring, I make all that gear myself.
I'm a Toolmaker / Fitter and Turner by trade. Have my own Lathe.
Also, the stack on the motor I just got from Tower Hobbies but I do admit the cylinder does look very
CRRCish.

Hardtop, thanks for the headsup on the ignition interference but as cdale03 picked out it a charging
jack. Never can be too careful though. Hey Hardtop, I don't think you fly at all, I don't think I've
ever seen you logged out of RCU:D LOL. Your just saying you're a flyer:).

Cheers guys KMM[8D]

hey katana.....

yeah i fly.....when im not working lol. ive got my 84" extra 300 in pieces at the moment....the crap muffler fell apart lol. ive also got a modeltech magic extra 3d machine for a bit of fun as well as the better half's new trainer.

on the shelf ive got an f/a18 hornet half built. not to mention an edge 540 as well as a few others. so when im not working or online im usually out flying.

RE: What do you have your conversion in???

Nice work, and that looks like a nice, lightweight 45cc engine. Where did you source the engine?

That intake manifold is really nice looking, but you might encounter problems with hot starts with it. If so, just let the engine cool down for about 10 or 15 minutes and then restart. If you have room under the cowl, you might think of making a phenolic, or delrin spacer to isolate the carb from the heat conducted from the engine.

Let us know how it flies!!

Thanks,
AV8TOR

captinjohn 01-06-2007 10:50 AM

RE: What do you have your conversion in???

It may also help too on hot re-starts is to let the engine idle and cool down after landing. In cool weather heat soak shoud not be a issue. A thick gasket on each side of aluminum manifold should help also. Capt,nl;)

RE: What do you have your conversion in???

ive got the exact same manifold on my 45cc engine. i dont have aproblem with heat soak at i use methanol fuel lol

hey wiz...

just to let you know that i will be making glow plug adaptors this week sometime...i will more than likely make a few this time and keep a few spares lol. will let you know when ive got them done.
