RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

Hi

Just received my short kit and it looks very nice. Trying to decide on the engine and retracts. I am looking foe an OS 91FX, Has anyone tried or used the new E-FLITE Electric retracts.

Thanks in Advance

Ron

Jaaron,

That is correct. When sanded to size, it is a little thicker than 1/8" an tapers some to the tip.
Very light and very strong. The kit is a joy to build.
Mine is all glassed an ready for painting. Have not decided on the color scheme yet.

RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

I've got one wing built, and need to start on the other one. I've decided to put some energy into the fuselage and get it completed/sanded and ready for covering. I fuelproofed inside the engine area, and fuel tank area today. Tommorrow I'll hopefully finish sanding the fuselage and be ready for covering that area. I think i'm going to go with the red / while / dark blue theme. Seems easy enough to see in the sky when it's traveling at high speed.

Thanks for the confirmation on the wing TE, just didn't seem correct to me, but Iknow I followed everything to the tee. At least I got and answer and can begin to move forward with this craft. It's been in the works for a couple years, then I got side tracked on a Top-Flite Stinson Relaint. Couple years later, now that the Stinson has flown, it's back to the jet and get ready for spring time fly'in.

Jim,

Mine has been in the ready for paint stage for two years.
I moved, changed jobs and built a few kits since.
Now I'm back on it.
I added non functioning canards to mine to mimic the SU-33.
The idea came from a post way back in this thread.
I will try to get a few pics loaded sometime this week to show what I have done.

Got both wingsput on today, but still got to complete the underside of them. Also bought some servo's for the wings.Lot's of sanding left to do.Also glassed the nose area, as I suspect it will receive some abuse.

Jim,

Here are the wing tip pictures you wanted.

The missile rails in the kit look too short and fat, so I made new ones.

I am painting mine, so I fully sheeted the wing.

The whole plane is glassed and sanded at this stage.

I will post some pictures later of the whole plane.

RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

I'm thinking of leaving the Missle Rails off mine, and adding a little more to the wing tip. I know those will get caught on something heading out the to field, or while at the field, and that'll be it, so I'll just spair myself the upset now. Finishing off the wings today and getting the servos's placed. Probably will go ahead and sheet the entire wing for a little added strength. Anyone else have photo's of there progress or lack there of?

Seems like I was inhaling sawdust all morning, but finally got 1 wing completed, sheeted the entire wing, and the ailerons, installed the servo, and servo horns, beveled the aileron and dry fit the hinges. 1 wing down and 1 to go, then all attention goes back to the fuselage and the rear tail feathers. Just out of curiousity what servo's are most using for the ailerons? I was thinking just going with basic servo's for the ailerons, and the heavy duty for the rudder's and elevators.

Got the other wing completed today and sanded, and now all attention has shifted back to the fuselage. 1 area I had problems with was the wheel wheel areas. For some reason the tire mounts I bought for the retracts, were hitting the side of the engine nacelle. So I dug out the area so the retracts would function correctly, and mulled over what to do in this area.

So today I decided to just cut and box the area instead of the deep gouge that was there. See below.

Just got back from the hobby store and bought some covering along with a trim seal tool, for ironing the small areas.  Thinking I'll start covering the wings tonite so I feel I'm making some progress.

Here are some shots of my progress.
Fixing small imperfections.
Should be shooting primer in a few days.
The canard is fixed. Set at '0' with the stab and wing.
Power is a Super Tigre S.90K with tuned pipe.

RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

Great job Tony,

I like those canards. Someone earlier in this thread talked about getting those to articulate. I thought a carbon fiber rod which carries through the fuselage could be used to connect both of them together. Then glue a control horn onto the rod inside the fuse. The question then is how to mix it in to the controls. It would be nice to have those canards assist in lifting the nose during slow speed flight (keep the nose up during landing) but I don't think it would be good to have them move during high speed flight.

Has anyone beefed up or made any mods to the elevator?

RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

Okay so no covering has been completed yet, due to other projects that have come about. However after seeing those photo's with the Canard attached, you've got me thinking about them again myself. While I wouldn't want to make them functional, they are very cool.............wheels are turning.

Can anyone tell me if you balance this plane with retracts positioned up or down

Thanks Mate, as this is my first retract venture I was sure it was up but needed some asssurance.Just hope it flys as cool as it looks.

Hey Squizzy!
Hope you are still working on your bird!
I flew my SU-27 today. Was having problems with my Jett Engineering motor and final leaned out the low end and that did the trick! I was screaming down the runway and fell in love with this machine all over again! I didn't even put it in storage...going to keep flying it like I used to!

Keep up the good build!
Joe

How fast do these "Extreme Speed Prop" planes fly..?
They look like a lot of work for a modest return in actual speed.
Would a sport plane like a Chaos or Ultrasport be as fast or faster with less power..?

Speedboy,

My wife and i have spent the last six months building a new house. No hobby time.
Just now starting to get my hobby space set up.
The plane is in primer, final sand stage (before the move). I have three small dings to fix (so far).
I will probably start painting after the first of the year. When I do, I will post some pictures.
