That is what I did. If you go back in the thread one of my mods was to shorten the gear legs by 1/2" and use Dubro 5" wheels. Made landings a breeze.

Nice job. The 20 fits in there rather nicely.

Here is my Stearman, G26 for power, changed the tail to army air core colors. Balance is perfect with the Zenoah.

Nice look job on the Army colors on the tail. I wish I was that good with that plastic coving stuff. I would like to have this plane redone in Army colors from nose to tail How does she fly with the G26 and what size prop are you using? You said you did not have to add any weight to balance. Does your G26 have EI or magnitor?

Jstanton,

Engine is a magnito version, stock muffler, running a Xoar 17x6 prop. Covering is pretty simple, just practice. Fly's like a two winged Cub, slow and easy.

Here is a video of the little DLE-20 running on the PT-17. looks like I will be using a 17x6 prop on it. The 17x8 wood prop I have on it only lets me get 7600RPM. I think it will fly the plane OK but everyone that has this little engine says a 17x6 Xoar prop is the best. so I will get on and give it a try. Here is the video of the break-in process. Now I'll go fly when weather permits

Lablover,

I did not get my DLE-20 engine & Jtec pitts muffler from Tower Hobbies. I ordered mine form Troybuilt. They also have a $25.00 discount on the DLE-20 and they have the standard Jtec pitts as weel as the DLE pitts muffler. I like the Jtec a littler better so I ordered that on. Here is a link for the standard Jtec pitts.

http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/JTPITT20DL.html

Here is a video of the maiden flight. This little engine really like a Xoar 17x6 prop the PT-17 just leaps into the air with that prop.

I richen up the top end a little and had 3 more flights that day You'll love this PT-17 with the DLE-20. Good luck with yours

Jstanton, hows the dle 20 working out in the PT17? From the video it looks like it has plenty of power to fly it.

Blackmonte,

The PT-17 is flying great with the DLE-20. The plne has more power than it needs to preform all of th stunts a PT-17 can do then some If you are thinking about getting a DLE-20 for this plane go ahead and do it you won't be sorry

With the DLE 20 in it...Did you find you had to add any weight to the front? If so how much. I'm wondering if the DLE30 might be the better choice if it needs more weight up front?

I did not need any extra weight to balance the PT-17 witht he DLE-20. All I did was move all the batteries and electronic ignition to the firewall and motor mount. Here is a video I took of the engine during the breakin process. You can see how everything is installed. Good luck you'll love this setup. Get yourself a Xoar 17x6 prop it is better than the 2 I used in the video.

Got my new pt-17 from tower today and man the covering is terrible, I have never seen so many wrinkles, the yellow is the worst especially on the airlerons, the blue is not bad, but I was going to replace it on the tail. I dont mind ironing it out if it stays, but I doubt with this much slack if it will shrink, wish g.p. used ultrcote

YES IT IS TERRIBLE !! I bought one in Jan and I spent close to 4 hrs doing the wings and fuse, the ailerons were hopeless. I contacted Tower with pictures and they sent replacements. The replacements were worse than the originals and they sent me a 2nd set but I still had to work on those to get them to an exceptable finish. I'm going to fly her for a while and then strip it all and refinish in solartex fabric covering. I'm going with the DLE 20 gas engine.

Well I have been in this hobby for @ 10 years and this is first, I called tower today and I am sending it back, I am not going to start a rant about tower or great planes, just really dissapointed. I waited till this was on sale and was looking forward to flying her but, if I put up with this type of crap then it would never stop, maybe someone there will take note if we do this enough.[&o]

I don't know if I would send it back just yet. did you take pictures and email them? They were very good about sending me the replacement parts,I'm sure they just have their share of issues with quality coming out of China like everyone else. I've bought arfs from other places and had the same kind of issues, they just don't take the time to shrink the covering correctly all the time. The plane is a nice plane and I should have it up in a week. I'll let you know.

Well I talked to tower again, still waiting for email of label to return plane, if you guys check the first post of this thread in 2005 the complaint is poor covering. I wonder if the manufacture of this particular plane is the reason, what i mean is I have a g.p. chipmunk, rv-4 ,venusII and more and never had any real problems, the idea of replacement was what i originally wanted but they wont open box and check the wings, why go through all this again with no gaurantee of a good plane arriving after waiting @ 2 weeks. tower did tell me to include a note explaining the problem so quality control can check it out. I hope the real problem cant be addressed......I do appreciate towers willingness to take it back...thanks

Are you using the Jtech Standard or Compact Pitts Wraparound muffler?
