RE: Great Planes PT- 17 Stearman ARF
Hey Guys
I am building this plane and am wondering how you are attaching the flying wires to the fuselage. GP recomends drilling part way into the fuse and then using ca to glue them in. That seems to me, that they would be very easy to knock off. Any suggestions would be very welcome.
Thanks
Ron

Ron,
I used 2 little pieces of flat metal that went all the way through the fuselage and had holes at each end. I use small push rods for flying wires when I fly with them. Good luck!

I have a GP -17 with a saito 170 radial Great in flight, performance, and scale sound- get a lot of looks at the field. Never had to use the weight box it balanced right on spec .Doug115

Got any pics of that 170 Stearman? Been in the back of my mind for a couple of years. Nothing better than a stearman with a nice radial sound.

I use the stock tank that came with the plane, if we fly it scale it can stay up approx. 13 minutes, if we do a lot of low level all out passes it good for approx.8 to 10 minutes. I think it's a great engine for the plane. ThanksDoug 115

I went with a 16x8. It seems to be a good choice as evidenced by it's power level and the way the plane fly's,but there are other sizes that are in the ballpark of the 16x8 that probably work as well. Good luck on your install of the 170 radial, you will not need the weight box.Doug

I didn't cut or change anything on the plane . The easy way to mount the engine is to cut a circle(use a high quality piece of ply) just smaller then the planes firewall, mark the orginal centerlines on the new firewall and hole saw a hole for the fuel tank. get sone quality spacers that space the new firewall just out from the frame rail and tringle stock that are on the plane , then using the thansferred center lines mount the engine with the mount and bolts that comes with the engine. Fuel proof the new piece and paint it The front thrust washer on the engine is almost right on the number that the plane calls for. mine balanced perfectly with out the wtg. box. Doug .

Bucho, looks like you got it mounted, It's a different way then I did mine, But there is more then way to do things. Sorry I didn't get more pictures posted but I have some bad health issues that sometime slow me down. You are going to enjoy the plane, keep us posted on your flying Doug

RE: Great Planes PT- 17 Stearman ARF
Maidened my PT-17 this week with an OS 1.20 FS Surpass and a 16x6 MAS prop. Flew extremely tail heavy even though it balanced at the indicated point in the plans. Put 12 ounces in the nose, which moved the CG forward about an inch or inch and a half. Flew ok with about 1/8th inch of down trim. Lifted off nice and slow. Didn't get much speed though. Rolls were difficult to impossible with low rates. Hi rates were ok, but real slow.
Needs a little more speed - not much though. Gonna try a 15x8 APC and maybe a little more weight in the nose. Actually I was flying it without the cowl and that may be all the additional weight it needs.
Glides in nice and slow on landing. Really a nice flier.
Regards
Michael
