Is there someone local to the Northwest that can give me a call and walk me through posting photos to this thread. I am almost ready to paint the total rebuild of my Pica Spitfire and I have several photos of the rebuild that might be interesting to someone also rebuilding an old Pica Spit. I have tried several time and failed every time.

Be sure to click on reply or quote to be able to get the option to post pictures. You will see directly under the box your are typing in two options. Multi-File Upload with progress bar. Or Click here to upload images and files. I use the second one. Havnt had much luck with the first. Also, you might want to get your pictures around 100kb size. Anything larger will take longer to load and possibly time out.

Just like Warbirdguy said. At the bottom of the box you use to post, you will see two lines. The one on the left say "BETA: Multi-File Upload with Progress Bar and Click here to upload images and files!! The next window will show and tell you what to do next. I can not wait to see your rebuild Pica Spitfire. Its to bad I am south of you in Olympia. What club you fly with??

Thanks Sonny

The canopy is left open for flying when the lower cowl is installed as I have an EDF behind the cylinder head which exhausts the hot air back out through the fuse and out via the cockpit.

cheers

My 60mm EDF is mounted in the firewall right behind the cylinder head (1/4" behind) and draws air out of the engine compartment, the speedy is on a slide controller on my TX so I can adjust the fan power as required

Is it possible to attach some photos so that we can all see how you achieved the installation of the EDF ? Like you in Australia, we also have higher than "normal" ambient temperatures and fully cowled installations here are not always possible. My Spitfire goes into hibernation during the Summer as far too hot and do not want to seize the engine.

The carb modification, is that an item that can be purchased, or was it cusom made? The main reason I didnt want to put a G62 in my spit was I didnt want that big carb sticking out the side. Im going with a 4.2 but its got the same issue but I believe I could make one of those work on my 4.2 also.

Warbirdguy, the G62 Carb modification can be purchased from Toni Clark, see Web link, then select Catalogue and downloadand see accessories for ZonoahG62.

MK XIX Pica Spitfire
I got my Pica Spitfire from a friend after the engine came off the original rails in flight. It had a damaged noise and the landing gear area was in real need of repair. Also the original builder did a poor job of the movable services, he didn't do much rounding of the leading edges and the movement created binding and the gaps were quite large. The pane was in poor condition over all, it had been repaird and repainted several times in it's life.
I stated by exstending the noise a little over 1" and replacing the rudder and elevators with new larger solartex covered ones and adding a door to conseal the switches and air fittings.

Ok, now it was time to attack the wing. I had read several threads on how to move the landing gear forward and didn't like any of them. I cut the wing open from the bottom from aleron to aleron, leading edge to flap.
I found several damage and repair ribes from other attemps at moving the landing gear and also landing misshaps.
I removed the ribs aand replaced them with new ones, I also built and installed a plywood spair behind the landing gear area. I moved the landing gear mount forward as far as possible, right through the original spair area. I set the tilt of the gear to match the original angle. I then recovered the area and reglassed the bottom of the wing.

I forgot to list a couple of other up grades along the way. I removed the bellcranks for the alerons and installed two (one in each side) servos and hatches for them.
I rebuilt the alreons.
I added a semi scale gas filler on top of the fuslage simular to the scale location.
I built wooden exhaust stacks and added the Griffon humps over the stacks for the MK XIX noise. I changed the shape of the bottom of the cowling and exstended the spinner a 1/4 of an in.
I installed robart hings on all control serfuces.
I also laid up fiberglass gear doors on the wing before I cut out the wheel well openngs.

After sanding and primering the plane it was time to add panel lines and pop-rivets, hathes, lights, and scale humps. This was new to me and was vary interesting as i trided different mothiods for each.
I have painted silver for future weathering after the paint job is complete.
I will be painting next. I will update after this is complete.
we have two other 1/5 scale spitfire fire being refurbished here in the Northwest. One friend is doing a Pica, and the other a Yellow. The beginning of a flying group of our own..........LOL.

Default RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)

Can any one give me some pointers on balancing a spinner.
I have put a search on this site but nothing has come up.
I have a spinner for my 1/5 Pica Spit that is heavy and will need a balance.
I have it on my balance machine but what puzzles me is that it sits with the prop cut outs in a horizontal position so i guess you add weight to both sides at right angles to compensate for the cut outs and then it will be just a matter of fine tuning.
Is this how it is done?
I balance all my props. no problem but this is the first time i will be balancing a spinner.
Also there is a shot of the back plate and a DLE 55 prop. washer the prop hole in the back plate is bigger then the prop hole in the DLE prop washer, how do i center the DLE prop washer over the back plate so i can drill the four prop bolt holes accurately because if its not centered it will throw throw the spinner off center and all hell will breakout on the engine when its running.
The only way i can think of doing it is to drill the DLE prop washer out to the size of the back plate hole and use the shank of the drill to center the Prop washer and the back plate, and then drill the four prop bolt holes.
There is only about 1/16 difference so not much chance of finding something as a guide in the back plate to center the DLE prop washer.
Any ideas?
Dave.

Not as impressive as some of the other offerings, but here are some photos of my H-9 Spitfire. Mostly of the engine (JBA 15 with aftermarket muffler and replacement carb) and the radio install.

Not yet test-flown. Likely to occur this weekend.

Default RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)

dubs, you are almost there. I have balanced a number of spinners using a TF Top Flite POWER POINT PRECISION MAGNETIC BALANCER that has tapered prop retainers that work well to center different size holes so I don't have to do what you invented for centering the spinner. I've used both removing weight from the heavy side and adding weight on the light side depending upon what seems to work best. In the case you describe I would remove material from the heavy bottom of the spinner or add weight to the top until it is balanced. It's a little like balancing a three bladed prop. I always remove weight from the bottom side of the prop hub and never touch the beautiful blades. With the spinner and prop virtually perfectly balanced with all work done inside the spinner the prop/spinner looks like brand new untill after a few of my "landings" (?).

Hope this helps.

Out.
