RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build
Hey Mark
When I look at the plans and my airplane the bottom surface of the lower wing and the upper longeron that the stablizer rests on are absolutely parallel.
Have you made the saddle modifcation that I addressed in post #110?
If you haven't your lower wing will not fit in the saddle and the incidence will be way off.
Check out the post on page 5.
Let me know if you need farther clarifcation.

Hooray!! I finally got time to do some building.
The soldering really worried me, but I used surgical gloves so no hand oil got on the parts, sanded everything and kept it clean.
Plenty of flux and it's solid a a rock, I'm very happy at this point, it looks like I'm on the home strait.
I extended the front a little to allow for a 160mm engine.
I burnished the al with sandpaper on my thumb, which turned out pretty good.

Looking good 3136.
I just got a kit of those Pups, they sure do look very nice (my first 1/4 scale). I just can't wait for the Winter Months to start building .
Surely I will go aver and over this thread during my build to re-read all the comments and recommendations of the members.
ALO111, good luck with your Maiden, Keep us posted on how it behaves in the air.

Thanks guys, I just finished the motor install.
She'll be ready to fly in a week or two.
ALO111, make sure you video the maiden, good luck!

I'd set the thrust offsets as called for in the manual. 1 deg down, 2 deg to the right (as viewed from in the cockpit.)
Knowing that these planes can be tail heavy, Idid everything Icould to move weight to the front. I went with the Zenoah G26. Heavier than similar engines but additional weight would have been needed with a lighter motor. For a receiver battery, Iused NiCads instead of LiPos and mounted them right against the firewall. I used rigging wire to secure the tail instead of the recommended pushrod. It's lighter and more scale like. I have "faux pull-pull" in that the control surfaces are moved with pushrods but in my case, Iused carbon fiber rods (lighter) for the parts that were visible outside of the fuselage or wings. Ibuilt more a more scale like undercarriage which is probably a little heavier than the kit's design but it is weight that moved the CGforward. All of that resulted in a plane that balanced right on the money and needed no trimming.
Good luck with your build!

Well, mine isn't finished yet, but is projected to be around 7.2 to 7.5 kg. I put a bit of basswood in the tail and added a bit more strength to other areas. I added more ply around the wing fixing points and glassed around them as well.
I also used 2 part epoxy for most of the glueing, which added a bit too much weight.
I'm very happy with the strength of it though, and I'm sure with all that wing it will fly fine.
I have a scratch Se5a which is only a bit bigger, and that is 12kg and flies fine, it lands at walking pace.
The wings are scale on that one, they are very thin and undercambered, overall just a little more wing area.
I think this will be easy to fly.

I also did a bit of mods here and there and with the scale bits and a ton of lead in the nose came to 9kg hope it will be alright.

Hey guys I set my elevator and rudder up with 2/56 sullivan nylon rods, I'm not sure if they are sturdy enough for a plane this size.
It's a fairly slow plane though, I certainly wouldn't use them on an extra or mustang this size.
I can't get any bigger rods locally so it will have to get a pull pull set up if the 2/56 is no good.
The covering hasn't gone on yet so I can still do a pull pull system.

I think the Nylon Rods will not be sturdy enough for the plane I would go a head and do the Pull-Pull setup you will like it much better And it will look more scale.

I agree 100% rods will be ok but pull pull on rudder and elev well worth the effort. Its what these planes are about, cables and more cables.

Thanks guys,
I went with a pull pull system, I'm glad I did that as it looks bloody good!
I had to put the servos behind the cockpit though, as I have a full length pilot, so it will need more nose weight now... poo!
I'll upload some pics before I cover it in case you have a wiser idea on my setup.

I was really happy with the strength of my pull pull setup, so I went ahead and did the covering.
I'm getting very close now, can't wait to get her airborne.

It sure looks very nice, I like the covering job.
can't wait to start mine, keep up the good work.
did you decide on the engine? I was thinking to go with a saito 150 on mine.

Hi Leo, thanks for the compliment.
I fitted a pte 36 gas engine in mine, it used to be in an extra. It was left over so it found a new home.
I had the pup ready for maiden, but I had to put my lovely dog Bella down on Friday, she was 18, so I wasn't up to it.
Maybe next week.

I know how you feel.
I lost two loving dogs and two budgies.
The second budgerigar was a harlequin and was buried in the corner of my backyard and has a small stainless steel plaque with his name engraved on it. The name was "pookie".
It is always emotional to loose a good friend.
