David it has been a pleasure watching your Cub come to life. Outstanding work. And even though you give much credit to other individuls it was you and your hands that put those ideas into motion. I thank you for noteing me as one, but, as with many on these threads our ideas are often not our own. And many of the one's that were original was improved apon from the great builders of thisand other forum's. You have done really good work, take complete ownership of it, it's yours.

Thanks guys!  Does that mean I have to take credit for all the mistakes as well?  I can't blame them on you??!!  [:@]

Seriously, this has been really fun even if it has taken so long.  And I hope you've enjoyed helping me as well.  It's been a great pleasure to make some awesome friends.

Back to the Cub, I got the nose painted last night but I need to learn how to use latex better.  I was getting a somewhat lumpy finish so I tried thinning a bit more as well as using more Floetrol but I ran out of daylight.  I'm thinking a little sanding with 220 and finishing up with 400 might give a satisfactory finish.  It's a flat finish anyway but the clear coat gives it just enough gloss.  Does anyone have any hints/tips?

Hi guys I am looking for some measurements.. I am building a BUSA 1/4 J3 Cub and I have been thinking about putting a set of the premade struts that Hanger 9 makes and puts on there Arf.. I need a measurement from the center of top bolt hole on the front strut to the bottom of the strut where the adjustment bolt comes out of the strut .. If somebody could give me this I would really appreciate it .. Thanks Ken

Whatever you do David don't use 220 grit, way too agressive you will see scratch marks. You can start with 400 and then finish up with 600 grit paper...

Okay, I'm calling it good enough. I gave it a couple more coats and then, as VJ suggested, sanded with 400 grit to knock it down a bit and then finished up with 600. That polished it out just enough.

I've either got to figure out how to paint with latex or stop using it. I think the later is my preference. The next build will probably be covered and painted, with what I don't know yet.

As 21st was is in comparison to monocote. Solartex is that much better/easier than 21st. And as easy as Solartex is compared to 21st, Polylite is five times as easy as Solartex.

Gee Robert, you really know how to make a guy feel good!  (Sarcastically intended).    Next time it will be Polylite.  Isn't it cheaper too Robert, or am I thinking of something else?  To cover the Cub takes a 10 meter roll which is just over $100.  But then, add the paint....

Yes, this was and is a learning platform for me.  I know what to do different next time.  Thanks for all the tips guys!

It's just information, personal opinion at that. So take it for what it's worth. Kinda like "I don't like latex"! LOL

Latex is the cheap way. Klass Kote is the expensive way. Dope runs in the middle. You get what you pay for.

You already know my opinion on Solartex so I won't go there. I think you know how I will be covering and painting my 1/3 Spacewalker. I haven't done a dope finish so I can't really comment on how well it works or looks.

Later!!

I have covered with Century 21 fabric before and it was already coloured so it didn't need to be painted but the interior of the plane still needs to be painted with something .. Are these other coverings coloured or do they require paint ? I am not so good at painting...Picture Hooch in Turner and Hooch .. I make a mess and I am afraid of ruining all my hard work ..I have been thinking about covering my BUSA J3 in Century 21 fabric because I have worked with it before and know what to expect plus its easy to fix if I have an oops ..Then all I need to worry about is painting the inside somehow .. Can you you guys offer any advice ? Your planes look awesome .. I am getting old and health is getting me and I will never get that good but I still do my best and I love it ..I do want a fabric finish ...What is solartex like ? Or polylite ? Are they fabric and are they finished ?

Solatex is a pre-colored iron on textile covering. Polylite is a polyester fabric that must be doped on and painted.

If you don't want to paint then you will want to go with the Solartex.

Thanks Anthony How does Solartex compare to Century 21 ? Is it as easy to work with ? How does it compare price wise ? What do you use to paint the inside with ? I do have a Spray gun that should do the job if that's the way to go...

I have never used Century 21. I used Solartex on my 1/3 Cub and to be honest I hate it. I am going to tear the stuff off this coming winter and recover the plane in fabric. It was easier to apply than monokote and worked grat around the wing tips. I just can't keep the covering tight. I am constantly re-shrinking.

As far as painting goes the only good way to get a match is to take a sample of the fabric to a paint store and get latex mixed to match. This is good for gas but not glow.

My 1/3 Cub will get covered in Poly-Fiber lite fabric from Aircraft Spruce and painted with Klass Kote paint. I just covered my 1/3 Waco like this and it turned out great. See the attached pics. The Klass Kote paint sprays very well and looks great.

I am going to be running a Gemini twin in my cub so I will need something fuel proof.. I bought a can of yellow paint from Top Flite that says fuel proof on the can... Called LustreKote I had thought about maybe getting a few more cans of that and spraying the inside of my Cub .. Have you ever used it ? I guess it would not matter if it wasn't a perfect match if it was just the interior.. I think I will skip the Solartex... Century 21 works okay for me .. Your Waco looks great...

After taking a break for a few months on my build, I've started again. This weekend I got the cabin blocks shaped and glued in place and I'm working on the main struts. I pulled out my old triganometry skills to measure and set the dihedral to about 1 degree. I'm waiting for the JB weld to dry/cure and then onto the jury struts.

bikerbc, like Anthony said, the Solartex goes on real easy, you can get it "prepainted", but the only way I could get a color match was to go the latex route which came out as close as you can get.  That is to say the only way I wanted to go at this point, it's the cheapest method.  I've been spending more than I can afford on this build and the paint came in at around six bucks.

That said, I have been putting in a lot of detail, but for me this is more of a learning platform and I have learned a lot!!!  You're at the right place for assistance, let me tell ya, these guys are great!

But back to the covering, I've never use 21st either, but if you like it and you are comfortable with it, GO FOR IT!  The main thing for me is to have fun.  If it's more work than fun, then what good is it?

Take care,
David

Anthony,  Are you using the Ceconite Lite from Aircraft Spruce?  How did you initially stick it down?  Stick IT? or something else.  Also, what dope did you use or did you just paint over the fabric?  I have a roll of Ceconite Lite, but I have not had much luck with it, so I must be doing something wrong.  Thanks for your help.

Stan,
I used Poly-Fiber Lite, I believe it is the same thing. I used Nitrate dope thinned 50/50 with laquer thinner to atatch the fabric. The weave was filled with Minwax Polycrylic thinned 25% with water. The finsih is Klass Kote epoxy paint.

I have a build thread on the Waco in the scale forum and I cover the whole process there.
Later!!
Anthony
