Zenoah G-23 & G-26 help.
I have the G-23 and G-26 aircraft engines. Both engines have same the problem. They will not start by hand flipping, they will only start when I use my hand drill with adapter. Once started they run great, high speed and idle speeds no problem. I have checked plug gaps, mag gaps and prop position, even bought new fuel. Any suggestions?

Sometimes throttle position means a lot on starting. When you run your engine, make sure you have the Idle speed set maybe a tad fast or at the smoothest running. Now shut TX off so that same Idle speed is set. Then try your hand start at that throttle setting. Best Regards, Capt,n

Dave , Tell us what your starting procedures are . Sometimes just a change in a procedure makes a huge difference . Begin with how you would normally attempt to start the engine . Decribe when you would choke the engine, what the throttle position would be , ignition on or off , how many flips etc....

My starting procedures. ignition off, flip prop till I see fuel being pulled into carb. No choke on carb, I use my palm as a choke. Throttle 1/4 open, ignition on and try to start engine.

Dave, you mention mag gaps so I assume you do not have the engines with electronic ignitions. You need a hearty flip to get the mag to generate a spark. I do believe it is something equivalent to a couple of hundred RPMs os more. One of my friends never hand any luck getting them hand started and bought a starter. Dan.

Before I switched my G23 from mag to CDI it hand started quite easily, but one very important thing of note is that most all Zen engines including the G23 and 26 like to be very wet when starting and requires a healthy flip to get them going.

RE: Zenoah G-23 & G-26 help.
Zenoah magneto engines like to be very wet with fuel and need a strong quick flip. The procedure that works the best for me is to open the throttle fully , Ignition off , choke then engine untill fuel is dripping freely out of the carb , remove hand from the carb or open choke and flip the prop 2 or 3 times with the throttle still open IGNITION STILL OFF, (this draws the fuel into the cylinder) Reduce the throttle to slightly off idle, TURN IGNITION ON and flip the prop with great vigor untill the engine fires.
The keys are: 1) to get it wet with fuel ,2) get the fuel into the cylinder , 3) Flip it with enough speed to generate a good spark.
Now this is assuming that you have placed the prop and magneto magnets in the correct positions relative the the coil.

The above is my exact starting routine which works every time.

RE: Zenoah G-23 & G-26 help.
I had some engines that where really hard to start, got tired of hand starting.
The ones you can buy where rather expensive and required 24 Volts to start a bigger engine.
So I got myself a motorcycle starter motor, build a little frame around it and a chain reduction gear.
Costs a few bucks and runs on 12 Volts with lots of torque.

i hand start both my g-62's and my g-23 with no problems. the secret is prop position in relation to the mag magnets . if you pm me i'll be happy to give you my number and i can help you better over the phone. it's not as hard to start as you may thing ,WB_1

How about some pics of your starter? Thanks.

You can't just put these up against compression and flip the prop
Milton from RC Extreme Power told me what was going on, apparently there's two points the hub has to pass, one that charges the ignition, one that fires the spark. If you put the prop against compression you're only passing the second point.

that's right. the secret is to have fast motion on the stator before the first magnet gets to the coil other wise your just flipping past TDC.

Thanks,
it works nicely, but the biggest engine I have is a 50cc.
I'd think it will turn over a 100cc engine, but over that it needs a higher reduction gear.
So I am happy with it and saved some serious money, which of course was spend on another plane

Here is one I made from the motor out of an electric scooter. The scooter was 24 volt; I run this starter off 2 three cell 3500mah Lipoly packs for 22.2 volts . It's a brute! Way stronger than the old gear reduced starter I had before. For most people it would need an extra handle for two hands.

That scooter motor is a good idea. Don't know why we should pay $350+ to get a decend starter.
Yeah, a chain guard would be great, I thought I am fine as long as I can resist the urge to put my finger in the chain
