RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Samparfitt, It's just the basic, run of the mill Top Flite kit spruced up to get it a little closer to what it's supposed to look like. As is, they're pretty far off, so I just try to do stuff on them that can be done to make it look a bit better using bits and pieces of tubing, styrene, proper color seat straps with actual hooks that hold the pilot in, change the headrest, add some depth to the instruments, gunsight, switch boxes, etc.. On mine I installed little LED map and dash lights shown somewhere back in the thread here. I sort of stumbled into doing some cockpits for Dave and George through the thread. No problem to tack another on the assembly line if you want to PM me.
Dave, I know there's different thoughts on the hard vs. soft mount ideas, and as I've always had good luck with a hard mount and properly balanced props, I'm not overly concerned with vibration at the moment. If it seems like it'll be an issue, I'll put one on as I've got a vibration mount on hand somewhere. I've only hard mounted gas engines a little smaller than these, but I've always been real happy with the hardwood box direct to the mount plate. If anything is out of balance so bad that it's going to shimmy, then it's probably going to do that with or without a vibration mount I think, so we'll see how it works out.

One side done, just the main doors on the other side remain to hinge. Using BVM door hinges which work good for this. They've got that little arm you see on the drive hinge in the back for a servo to hook to...simple.

Thanks Bob. Nothing's on there yet for a mechanism. I'll use a mini servo on each side to drive them. Sorry for the dark pic. They're all on there now.

Nice wheels George. Stilll working on that upgrade. But she's finally on her legs with the doors open now. I probably didn't need to set this thing up like this to take a pic. More anxiety to get it done, probably not what I need.
Also, tips the scales at a shade under 22lbs as it is, missing all the wing servos and control surfaces, and paint and rx and batts. I'll bet she comes in around 27 or a little more all up. Liking that 3.7 a little more after seeing this.
It needs sooo much finishing work though, sanding, flow coat, etc. Just have been puttering through stuff til I get to this part as one I have to do before I move on.

Bob, I'll get some shots up of the linkages when I put the servos in there. Nothing complicated just some wire and a servo behind the wheels on each side.

Nice wheels ctflyboy, I went to Aerotech's website but I couldn't find these wheels. Are they cheaper than Robarts highly over priced aluminum wheels?

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks again Bob. This was real exciting putting it on it's feet for the first time. It's real impressive sitting in the living room. I'll hijack progress once I get it where there's nothing left to do before painting and detail and try to get other stuff up to the same speed so I can prime and line everything at once. Should have a pic or two coming up of the 2 Bearcats, the Z. Hellcat and this one all together on their legs soon enough though. I've got a club meeting on Sunday where it'll get checked over pretty well, so I wanted to get it able to stand on it's own for tomorrow.

Hey guys, could somebody post some details about how you set up access for radio switches
and charge jacks. There are some good pics of the outside. Where did you mount the switches
inside?

If you look in the group build there are pic,s and a discription of what I did, You can use as is or mod as necessary to fir your need,
A word of caution measure twice in side and out and cut once, if you are installing retracts and going to put your air valve, double check the in side box
Hope this helps
Cheers bob t

Those are greate looking wheels.
By the way how about some pic, of your progress, As you know my build is now complete, Decals and all, but the weather has been so bad (snow), (wind) or both I haven't been able to take pic, I am on vacation this week so if mother nature will corporate I hope to post some close up's and a vido of the gear doors in action
Have to admit I am learning a lot by reading a lot of the old post, and doing some planning for the next project.

Your right it is a thrill to put this bird on its feet, and still more when you get to see the gear operate..[8D]

Mike,
I'm planning on making an opening hatch at the scale fuel tank fill spot in front of the canopy with a glass piece. Scale diameter of that circle is around 4" which should be big enough to fit all the stuff underneath it. Putting it on a hinge might be a little tricky, but I've got some ideas for that.

I have been working on the wingtips, sanding measuring sanding,You know the DRILL all too well, thanks for the complement on the wheels.
once I get thru the right wingtip. I'll finally be able to sand & glass the wing,
from there its the DREADED FLAPS. then I can start on the gear doors.
I'll post some pics probably next week.
Bob, CHEER UP , Spring is just around the corner as the saying goes, but I'm not so sure as to what corner.

Anybody got a pic of their internal cowl mount setup with the cowl ring to mount on the firewall?? That's next for me and aside from the little back canopy frame piece, ALL before finish activities!

Double check that hatch location , I think your air tank is in the way, if not I think its an execlent choice..
With a dummy engine I could not se a good way to attach the cowl from the front, I am using hardwood blocks at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock with 1/8 thick dougnut of gas fuel tubing and 6x32 nynol bolt, the cowl is drilled about .005 smaller than the tubing, when you squeese it down, all is tight and the vib's have no effect.. You do have to put in new bolts once and a while. paint the heads of the bolts and it a nice clean set up..
Ctflyboy
From my experiance the key to getting the flaps right is getting the hinge line right,, make your self some drill jigs one for the flaps and one for the wing, I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it saves on the frustration and you only have to drill the holes once. (Been there twice)
Have fun fellows, and so much from a wanabe expert
Cheers Bob T
PS If you have time and are intrested in some execlent reading about the corsair pick up a book from your library called " Corsair: The F4U in World War ll and Korea

G'Day Wulf.
Good luck with the cowl. Have you, or for that mater any body else thought of using operating cowl flaps? I am at that the cowl mounting stage now and thought it would be a good idea to have the flaps functional. Anybody got any ideas?
Regards.
Bill.

Hiya Folks,
Well I'm currently working on the gear doors and am a little frustrated. [>:] Been messing with it most of the day and just can't seem to get things worked out. I was looking over previous posts and concluded that the method outlined on page 11 (post 258) seemed the simplest and probably easiest to install. I can't seem to get it to work out. If anyone can post some more detailed shots of this type of install, I'd like to have a look and see where I'm going wrong. I'll try to take some pics of what I've got going on and post later. I just needed to get out of the shop for a bit and vent, sorry
Cheers,
Dave

I looked at them and deciced it was not for me, The thing I could not see was a mech/ sys that would fit under the cowl and still be sturdy
Dave Best advice on gear doors is be vary patient and read all you can on every one's system, I think dion's system is the easyone, in this thread info on gear doors starts about page 9 and goes to about 20.
Thake a deep breath and have fun
Cheers Bob T
