RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
No cowl flaps for me Bill....part of the reason why I got the open flap version cowl from F.S.. That's waaaay to much engineering and fiddling with for me on this one. I've got some ideas on the cowl. Was going to use socket head nylon bolts from the inside using a long ball wrench to get access in there as I've got a good selection of those. The dummy radial messes things up pretty good for easy sight in there, so maybe I'll take the payoff and get a radial on at the expense of having exposed cowl bolts. []
I have to say setting up my doors so far hasn't been too tough using the BVM door hinges. I had to leave a little more on the hinge line than I would have preferred, but they do work to get the doors all the way down without hanging up on the curve of the airfoil. Still, another 35 bucks for door hinges then though, but I figured having that little control horn already on those hinges, and having them made from C/F was the way to go. Bob's right Dave, takes a lot of fiddling. Just take care to try not to sand too much off the doors. You can always fix stuff you mess up here, so no big worries. Time spent vs. the size of the task gets a little disproportionate on tasks like these though, so just keep fiddling. We know what you're going through.
There's some shots of my door workings on the video I'll send with the cockpit.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. Wulf, you're right about the time vs payoff factor being a little low. Then again I always seem to go through this period with any build I do. First couple of nights, couple of hours and you've got a "big" wing panel or a good section of fuse to show for your hours of work. At this point after several hours, there is little difference. I know the fiddly work involved in installing a servo and air control valve but, doesn't "look" like much.
Ah, well, back to review a bunch of posts with pics about gear doors then back at it.
Cheers,
Dave

This evening I had my first oppurtunityto work with the EVERCOAT, I used it in the area of the oil coolers, mixes real nice, spreads real easy, and dries fast, the nicest thing I found and couldn't not believe was the SANDING part of it were you ever right
it sands so easy I took a piece of #220 grit and did it by hand the results are perfect and, you were also right, about how it sands better than BALSA.
Thanks for that TIP
George

George glad you like the Evercoat. I got the same pleasure first time I sanded the stuff. You'll start to figure out all different places you can use it now.
No progress for me lately as I've been hijacking for B'cat, H'cat and Dora progress. Have to get over to Radio Shack and get myself some more magnets for the canopy. Once thats fully attached to the formers, I'm good to detail, sand and begin the real finishing process.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
hey guys, long time no read. I have hit a bit of a stale mate on the corsair, I kind of went off on a tangent. With all the nice weather on the way I think I'll hit it hard very soon. You guys have been talking about the exact same issues and thoughts I have on the wing issue. So I don't have any questions right now, just thought I'd say hi. Oh by the way my addiction has become rediculous since I started 4 months ago.

Gentleman,
Perhaps I was right in saying "that maybe its best to upload in the evening hours"
cause these pics went right through on the upload.
Like I said earlier twice and no go but, it was around 5 PM eastern,

The last pic in post #125 showing the top of the wingtip, and last pic in #126 showing the bottom of the wingtip.
this was done for more scale like tips as per Corsairjock suggestion.

RT,
hopefully you weren't referring to me when you said fool in one of your last posts. Our weather here in WV has actually gotten pretty good, low winds, 40-70 degrees but a little rain. So I'm sorry to hear bout' all your snow, but I'd have to try ski's on something if I had that much snow. Good Luck to ya'.

Nothing was ment to or at anyone, it was just my frustration coming out, With the amount of water in this last snow it will now be late april befor the field will handle 20 plus pounds, we will be flying hand launch SPAD combat as sone as wel can walk on the field with out leaving foot prints.
but gota go to Toledo if we get group to gather
Ctflyboy
Those pic look like you are realey comming along, it appears your glassing is nice and smooooth. How did you do the trailing edges??
Cheers Bob T

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
RT 3232 seeing that I did the bottom first
The glass is a continous piece from the bottom up to the top edge of the trailing edge and then trimmed. when I did the top,its the same application, so basically there are 2 layers on the trailing edge, which is nothing considering the cloth weighs 3/4 oz. per yard.

Hi George
Seeing I have never glassed a bird, thats why all the questions, I ve also been reading a coupla outher threds in RCU on glasing, trying to get my old brain in gear for my next project. This scale building this winter has been a real hoot, and on the next I will probleydo a lot more detail.
Don't have a clue on what it will be, what ever it will probley be G/S P-40,P-47, spitt, Thats one of the reasons to go to TOLEDO, I also fell heir to what seams to be a set of Brian Tayler corsair plans from an estate they are vary faded Title blocks have been removed but in one margin is the BT name so we will just have to see.
