rt3232,

Who's radial mock up is that. Is it Fiberglass Specialties? Let me know because I love the way that thing looks. How much did you have to do to the Radial to make it look so detailed and real? Is the cowling Fiberglass Specialties detailed cowling? That is one sweet looking plane. I appreciate the pic's and it seems as though I won't have to cut much of the cowling out. Did you cut the air vents in the rear of the cowling on the lines and then bend them out that way? Let me know!!!

Thanks,

Gibbs

Gibbs

Thanks for the complement, but I have to admit it is T/F 1/5 abs job and painted with plastic model paint. I have a book that has a front view in color and I just copied the easy parts, it is backed up with a 3/32 AC ply backing then back filled with blue can expandable foam to save it from vibration.
If you can see this also works as my air baffle, by directing most of the in coming air across the cylinder.

I have never seen a F/G/S engine, so all I know is hear say seems they are heavy and you still have to do a lot of little things to make it look good, maybe one of the other fellows reading this can give you more reliable info.

Well this is what it looks like right now. I should hope to have it finished by the end of the year.

Cliff600,

I hope mine looks that goog. You do good work. I like it.

Is it glossy or matte? I couldn't tell from the photos. Whose paint did you use?

Thank you. I just hope it flies. I used Nelson hobby paint, it is called non-specular sea blue it is not really glossy or flat. It only looks glossy when the light hits it just right. This is my first kit build so I have not used different kinds of paint, but I do like this paint. Jerry Nelson (the owner) was very helpful over the phone. One pint did the entire plane and I still have a bit left over. I am waiting on my prop and pilot, both are on the way, but not here yet, hopefully soon.

I love it's looks so I'll call Jerry on Monday. Did you use a spray gun? A HVLP spray gun by chance? Which (who's) pilot did you choose? The pilot is the one part that I've really struggled with. Looks real good!

Jerry can tell you how to use it in a spray gun. I did not, I used a foam brush. You need to do several light coats. With this paint you need to thin it with water. I messed up at the beginning and did not thin it enough, You need to have a consistency of just a bit thicker than water. I added about 35%-40% water to mine each time I made it. Each coat dries very quickly, about ten minutes. If you use a gun then I have no idea how you need to mix it, but he sends about 5 pages of instructions with it. My pilot came from Century Jets he is the 1/6 scale pilot. The 1/5 scale pilot is too big. They have pics on thier site too. Thanks again for the compliments.

Cliff,

Thanks for all the info, you have been most helpful. The pics were great! I can't wait to see this beautiful bird fly. I hope you take plenty of pics and share some of them with us. I will look into the pilot deal tomorrow. Thank you again for your help.

Bob, Nice job on your dummy radial. It really adds something special to your Corsair.

Have you guys seen these? http://www.aerotechmodels.com/dummy.htm

I think I will buy one the next time I have a subject requiring a dummy radial. They're a little pricey, but they sure look good to me.

Williams Bros also has dummy radial kits which are highly detail. http://www.williamsbrothersmodelproducts.com/rc.html

A friend is building one, and it is a work of art.

First Cliff
That bird looks great it is nice to see more pic' hear in the thread.

Tom
Thanks for the complement, you just don't want to get to close as I am NOT good at detail but I am trying to learn, have never seen the aerotech dummy but will look into for next project, when I was at the Toledo show in april of this year looked at the williams brothers unit and the only thing that kept me from getting one was, the measurements I had with me of my cowl they did not match close enough so I passed,

Gibbs
About the cowl out let air, if you do the corsairjock mod by adding try stock behind the firewall you can then sand a 1" radius at the fire wall this greatly increases your exeit air area as you need to have a 2 to 1 ratio. I only did the lower half.

One outher thing for those using a G-62 for power I would recomend using a thin Iso block between the carb and the engine, this will give you suficant clearnce between the cowl and carb, just be carefull when tighting do not over thghtien the block can break.

rt3232,

I didn't understand what you were saying. What is a Corasairjock mod and what was the rest of what you said? I will e-mail you and give you my phone number. Maybe if you get a chance you can give me a call and explain it to me so I can ask questions while your telling me.

Thanks,

Gibbs

Tim,

I don't think your doing the right thing. The cut needs to be stitched not ca'd together. Your going to get a big puss filled red thumb in a couple days. I thought about doing what you did now and it was vetoed by the wife. She didn't take me to get it stitched she just cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide and then butterflied it together. Remember you need that thumb to fly.

Good luck with the cut,

Gibbs

Sorry I did not mean to make things difficult, Like I've said I am not a expert on scale so what I suggest to you is to surf thru a coupla of threads first one is "1-8 scale corsair .60 mods" by corsairjock, second one is "royal corsair .60 project" by dion subwhatever these fellows are experts in my mind and have great ideas that can be used in/on our kits there are 2 more threads by D Bronk who is a master at detail called "Top-flight corsair .15+18. if I only knew then..." and "Corsair buffs and historic hunters" and if you like PM me and I will try to help any way that I can.

rt3232,

What servos are you using in your Corsair for the high torque and the other three? I have a Futaba 7CAP PCM-PPM and have purchased a 2000 mah 6V and a 7 channel PCM receiver.

Thanks,

Gibbs

Servos I used are Futaba 3010's for control surfaces, 3305 on the flaps, std 3001 throtle and a mine on the retracts, using a 2000mah. 6.0 volt b/pack 127 fm receiver and a 8UAF xmitter.

rt3232,

What servo did you use for the retracts? I think you made a typo mistake. I have never heard of mine servos.

I think what he meant was a "mini" servo i.e. the Futaba S3101. Since all they have to operate is an air valve, a smaller servo can be used. It's easier to find a mounting location and they take less power. Although Futaba calls these "micro" servos, they should not be confused with the tiny little servos used on foamies and very small electrics i.e the Hitec HS-55. The S3101 is about half the size of a standard servo and about twice the size of the Hitec 55.

Hey Tim,

I've read a few of them and discussed your post. It was suggested that maybe we can all switch to the same ARF that is bolted together and add a little welding for added safety. Of course the guy that suggested that was handing out busines cards and come to think of it he was a welder by profession. If we all switched to the same ARF wouldn't the sky look so pretty when we flew ----------- for a while.

Thanks Zeeb,

I checked it out and put it on my wish list. What servos are you using in yours?

Gibbs
Well I think I'm going to be using the Futaba S3305 analog MG servos all the way around the control surfaces with matchboxes for the rudder/tailwheel and flap servos. Then I'll see how things look with separate rx channels for the elevators and ailerons, if I start looking tight on slots for everything, then I'll go with matchboxes for those as well. I have the S3101 for the gear but I'm still trying to decide on throttle and choke servos. There's a lot of discussion about MG vs nylon due to engine vibration and some even get into the analog vs digital argument, but that tends to be the guys who indulge in freestyle IMAC stuff and claim better throttle position hold and response from the digitals works better there, I'm not convinced... I've put S3010's on the throttle and choke of my 33% Edge but haven't flown it enough to know how the nylon gears hold up. Some will even use the S3101's on the throttle and choke...

Heah Y'all,

How do you all feel about soft mounting the engine? I've heard it's good for the airframe but bad on the engine. Let me know how you guy's mounted yours.
