I know this has been addressed in length all over the place, but is there any ONE particular break-in oil recommended for DL engines?

I know DA still recommends Lawnboy for all their engines (I asked them again at this years Toledo Show to confirm).

But I've read several places that it's not a good idea using Lawnboy in DL engines. Is it actually bad for the engine, or are there just better oils available?

The reason I ask is because I, like allot of people, would prefer only having to stock one gas mix for all my engines (I also have a DL-50 and a DA-50).

I've even read where some recommend just using the fuel you plan on flying with? Kind of makes sense in a way...you never hear of people using break-in oil for their chainsaw, or weedwhackers?

A little help would be appreciated.

I used Lawnboy for 20 years at 32:1 in weed whackers, chainsaws, blowers, and model airplanes. I never had a failure

Lawboy is just a marketing company. They do not make the oil,

I rebuit my sons G26 last week due to a crash. The engine has never had anything but Klotz model lube (310). After 3 years and close to 10 gals through it. no visable wear, no sludge or goo. Ater seeing a friend engine run for a 1gal as recomended by Da, the ring was stuck up and major carbon on top of the piston. I think that lawn boy stuff is a bunch of horse sheet.

Sorry, way off topic

He didn't say what oil or ratio he was using in his other engines. hard to make a comparison call without 1/2 the equation.

Lawnboy, run in a rich engine, as DA recommends, generates a lot of unwanted and unneccessary carbon. There's no reason to run rich unless DA believes their engines to be the equivalent of a glow engine.

DLE is not a DA, and DA does not make DLE. if they did they would have a stronger engine in the same displacement sizes.

None of my gas engines have had any fuel run in them yet...That's why I was wondering if there was any particular oil/mixture ratio that would be good for all of them?

The only gas engine I've owned, and run, has been an FPE-50. It was purchased used, and I used Amsoil 100:1 mix in it. Ran great, and had no problems for the whole year that I flew it.

I removed the carb....

Looks nice, what will the new length be from the mounting end of the standoff, to the end of prop hub?

Thanks

It's supposed to add 30mm to the length for a total 160mm or 6.3 inches.

that's IF you don't cut out the mountbox to let the carb sit inside the mountbox, correct? You can drop it back to where the original version was if you cut it open?

One always has the option of opening up the firewall. Some are scared of doing so and some might find it to be more effort than they want to expend in putting a plane together. Modelers don't have a problem with it.

Have I missed something? Does the Carb now come on the rear and not the side for the 30?? I know about the Cyberplate, but I mean from the Factory!

Ok I see the new version from the factory has a rear carb set up. Is the factory doing anything new with the side carb version? Does JediJody or Antique or tired old man have any information? If so please P-mail me if you cannot post here.

Thanks
Glenn

Jody will have the most accurate info but I would presume the side carb engine will become obsolete.

Not everyone WANTS a longer rear carb engine....
Jody will have LOTS of slightly used side carb cases...

Understood. Would Jody or any of you do any mods to the side mount carb cases since the factory refuses to deal with the issue? I really want one of these engines (side carb) but have held off until the issue has been resolved.

Glenn,

I was kind of holding off, too. As I need the side mounted carb for my application, as well.

But from what I can gather here, the "problems" are somewhat exaggerated, and only effect a small number of engines/individuals.

So if they are going to stop making the side mounted carb version we may just have to suck it up, and buy one while they're still available.

One needs to asked themselfs this, If these problems was exaggerated so much as some think with the side carb design, why would DLE spend a ton of money to change there whole set up and come out with the rear carb unit?

If I bought a chainsaw and it wouldn't idle in certain positions, I wouldn't tolerate that. I certainly wouldn't tolerate that condition in an airplane engine regardless of whether the extent of the problem was exaggerated or not. There were enough complaints just on the various forums for me to believe the problem was real. If there was any exaggeraing going on it was people trying to put down the extent of the problem, not the other way around. I didn't own a side carb DLE, I will be owning one when the rear carb version is released.

well, I have a side caburator working quite well but i'll defenitly move to rear carb
if the price is fair.
for my aplication side carb is not mandatory and I'm willing to open my firewall
for a rear cab and do the conversion and get over it.

I know it's not relevant but I wanted to brag a little bit about my Turnigy FPL 52cc. It is going into my Morrisey Bravo that I am building. I have run approximately 1/2 gallon through it and have run it in 30 minute intervals. After a good cooling off period 4 hours or more I am taching at idle a reliable 1580 to 1620 RPM. I am also getting close to 7000 RPM on the big end. I have not adjusted for best performance on the high end yet, and at times see 7000rpm+ for about a 3 to 4 second speed burst. I am swinging a Zinger 20x8 propellor for break in.

It is a side mounted carb and seems to have good power and runs extremely well with little vibration. I reset the timing to 32 degrees BTDC and balanced the prop and what a difference it made.

Anyway back to the DLE thread. Sorry if I butt hurt anyone by this commercial (LOL).
