Does anyone know what way the flapper read installs? I know it faces into the engine but does the screw holding the flapper go to the cylinder end or bottom end?

I found a clip on youtube showing a guy dismantling the engine and the screw was to the bottom of the engine. At 4:20 of this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh9gl6r7ZR0

After replacing the flapper on the reed the engine ran great until the ign died after 4 flights. Replaced it with a rcxle and it's been running great!

Now, install a Bowman ring and it will really come alive. Mine wouldn't even hand start after 2 gallons of fuel. Installed one of Franks rings and it hand-started on the first try and gained nearly 1,000 rpm.

Hi, after buying a new un runned engine, I was wondering if anyone on this thread, ( I did see one asking and one cleaning out the 'airways' ) is anyone else actually doing some work on his motor to get some power out of it ?, I will be stripping my new motor this week and cleaning up the engine ports to see what sort of rpm i can get out of it,,,

I started stripping the motor, there is some work to do to align the crankcase to the cylinder, which has an inside diameter of 30.9mm (so it's around 17cc ) the piston rings aren't square but rounded, hence the extra 1000 rpm claimed with 'Bowman' rings. the cylinder bolts weren't tight and some sort of red 'goo' was used to ( two drops ) probably to keep the joint in place, which will be scraped out before any damage is done, the engine itself is well lubricated.

It's a simple 'reed valve', you can get the fibre glass or carbon sheet from most chain saw and go-kart shops.
I have reworked the carb side to line up with it, amongst other 'tweaks' ,,

Hello,
Has anyone tryied to run this engine on methanol and low oil content like 5% etc? I don't like gasoline smell and getting methanol is not a problem.

Bowman closed his business about a month ago. If he's still selling off stock, make every effort to get a ring for your RCGF 15. It made a HUGE difference in performance.

Yes he replied to me very quickly, but with no paypal account it only gives me the western union option to pay, and with the postal charges it's running at $26 to get my ring,,

Opps I forgot the 20% French taxes ($6) and customs charges ($18) so at around $50 ,,,
I have contacted "gaviscool" on ebay, and waiting to see if he can supply one, .
I have run it a couple of minutes, and as you can imagine it's not enough time to bed the ring in, and has virtually no compression,,

Mine had no compression and as a result wouldn't hand start, had low rpm, no appreciable power, poor fuel draw, etc. Get the Bowman ring, or nothing will change. The improvement is immediate.

Don't shoot the messenger.

All my RCGF engines only came alive after I installed a Bowman ring. No exceptions.

I will give it a good run in on the model field this afternoon with an APC 13 X 6 'sport', and see whether that gives it a bit more compression,,,,
With any luck gaviscool will make me a ring, I had a couple from him earlier this year for my two Saito .45's, and they did make a big difference.

2 thoughts.
1st, could be wrong, but thinking that's not a lot of prop for that engine. Is the thought there to run it at a relatively light load? I do that with ABC engines, but ringed engines I usually run the prop I plan on using it with for break in (or something relatively close) with big heat/cool cycles.

2nd, will you be using mineral/dino based oil to attempt a little quicker break in (vs. synthetic)?

I haven't had any trouble with RCGF rings - but I don't have a 15 either. -Al

Mine is on the old 60-size Hangar 9 P-40. It has a 13x8 3-blade and a Hobbyking Pitts-style muffler. It unloads nicely in the air. I use a 32-1 oil mix of a synthetic blend.

I have never tached it but would guess it's above 9k in the air.

Also, I have a 12 ounce tank in the plane and a 30 minute flight at cruise settings is normal. It's my go-to plane to warm up and get rid of the jitters before I fly one of my 60cc fighters.

I have run it for about 350ml of 5% fuel mix, it starts and runs well I am getting these rpm's on,
APC 'sport' 13 X 6, 10.500
APC 'normal' 14 X 8, 8.450
both started the afternoon 500 rpm's less and now it has got quite a bit of compression, the only problem is the Vibration !, that's with a capital "V" !, I have NEVER had an engine vibrate as much as this RCFG !, it was fixed to a thick plank and clamped ( 3 record professional ones ) to our model tables which are old 50mm concrete table tennis tables and even that shook !, and the cramps vibrated loose in less that 1 minute !, so tomorrow I will strip it and have a go at balancing the crankshaft.

looks around 32° .

They give from 28° to 35°, but I cant see that making a big difference,,

Advanced timing usually results in a rougher running engine.
