Hello all, Well I have been flying electric & nitro aircraft for some time now, and just been itching to get in to the larger scales. I finally bit the bullet today and got the Lanier 94" Yak 54 80cc. The last one the local hobby shop had. From what I understand this was one of Lanier s newer realeases, before Great Planes bought them out. I was extreme impressed with the weight of the yak , it is very light and very well built, all the flight controls are prehinged and it has a beautifully done color scheme. Since there are not that many around I am having trouble finding information on them. As I am new to gaint scale aircraft I was hoping I could get some advice. I was thinking a DA 85, 3W 80, or ZDZ 80 for the engine, but not sure which one is best. I was also wondering about RX/TX systems, dual RX, 2.4 Gh I wanna make sure I don't lose control of such a big investment. Any advice help s.

you dont need 2 recievers on 2.4ghz if i were u i would have gotten an extreme flight yak just a bit smaller but ALOT lighter i have heard the laniers are heavy

I have one of the new Lanier 94" Yaks, and I can assure you .... very definitively .... they are not heavy, and in fact are actually "lighter" than the competition. Please don't spread misinformation. The earlier Laniers weren't heavy either, they were simply "mis-marketed"! The 87" Yaks and Edges were marketed as 50cc planes when in fact they were 80cc planes. So, when they came out at 17 -18lbs, people called them heavy, when that is actually a light weight for a 80cc plane .. which they were. They had almost 1500 sq. inches of wing area. That is not 50cc size. Most 50cc size planes have 1150 -1350 sq inches of area. Lanier actually has on the box 50-80cc engines, but many felt they should try to fly it on a 50cc and were no pleased with its performance and weight, ... not taking into consideration that the plane was bigger than most any other 50cc.

I have the 94"Yak and intend to start the assembly next week. It is about the highest quality ARF I have ever seen. The Ultracote covering job is show quality. The construction is outstanding and the weight is extremely light. GmanBill here on RCU flew one for a while and said his all up weight was 20 lbs. even, with a ZDZ 80cc. The plane has 1742 sq. inches and this is 33% size. Mine will have a 100cc twin which the huge cowl swallows. This plane is bigger than my 1/3rd scale Hangar 9 Cap 232 which has 97" span and 1750 sq. inches, and weighs 22 -24 lbs., depending on whether you go 80cc or 100cc with it.

Use goog servos: Some suggestions are Hitec HS-5985's or HS-5955's on the ailerons. Hs-5955 on elevators and a JR8611A or JR 8711 on rudder.

I have never seen anyone use more than 1 receiver on a 33% model, so 1 receiver is fine.

I like using 2 batteries and 2 switches to the reciever, use good quality low impedance NiMh or A123 batteries.

As for engines- DA85 all the way, mine runs great and strong. Excellent customer service from DA, what else can you ask for.

Use good hardware for flight controls. Aluminum servo arms. I use 4-40 all thread and carbon fiber rod for my control rods, very stiff and low cost.

Mitsu, will you be willing to do a build thread on this one? Doesn't have to be super detailed. Just general info and some pics? I just pulled the trigger on this one. How can you pass on 399.00? I'm very excited about this one as my other planes are smaller. AW Katana 84" being the largest. Also, if you guys find another thread on this plane anywhere else please post it.

For a plane this size and weight, the DA-85 is a great choice. Other engines are good as well but do not provide all the advantages of the DA (power to weight). The ZDZ Super 80 is powerful as well but requires some knowledge to operate.

Dual RX is absolutely not necessary on DSM2 and if you feel concerned, you might want to try the new Spektrum AR9100 with 4 remote antennas. This RX comes with a safety switch and also removes the necessity for regulators, as long as you use Hitec servos (HS5955) that can take 7.2 or 7.4 volts. So in fact, you save the weight and cost of two HD switches and two regulators.

I agree with you that these are well built, well covered and not that heavy. Their bad rep comes from Lanier's mistake of specifying engines that were originally at the bottom end of the required power. Hardware on the one I had was not great and I ended up replacing most of it. There is also some need to beef up the landing gear plate.

You won't even be limited to using Hitec servos if you plug two 6.6 volt A123 batteries into the dual battery leads of the AR9100 receiver. That's what I'm doing. [8D]

Yarom which size Lanier Yak did you have? The 87" Yak had a definite need to beef up the landing gear plate, but I have noticed that the 94" model has a completely different and redesigned landing gear plate from the 87". Apparently when the 94" size was released in Spring '07 they had already addressed this issue. As far as I know the 87" that Tower is still selling in limited quantaties may still have the weak landing gear plate.

There's lots of documentation and pics of the 87" landing gear plate shattering here on RCU, and a quick comparo between the two shows the 87" pics and my 94" are completely different.

Does anyone plan on running canisters in the 94'" yak, I am putting a 3W 80 CS in mine and planned on building a custom muffler, But am kinda curious to see how a canister install would go.

I have decided to go with a futaba 7c 2.4Ghz RX/TX and a smartfly power system on li-ons , But still can't decide which servos to use.

I thought JR refused to certify the use of their servos above 6V. As a matter of fact, when I called them to ask what could I use with the 8711, they said they recommend 6V.

Da just certified the use of their ignitions with 6.6V publically...

RAMMJETT, I have seen the 87" Yak flying on 80cc's (Search Lanier Yak on YouTube) ... and it didn't look outrageously overpowered, so I doubt 100cc will be too much for the 94" Yak. That's what I'm putting on mine as well.

thanks dude that makes me feel a bit better. da 100 might be a bit of a squeeze thow.hate to wreck to mutch paint.but realy at that price i can live with alot.i still can not believe they can make sutch big beautiful plane for that kind of money.always built my own planes .but man i cant buy covering&glue fro that price.not to mention the time that i really dont mind spending on a kit.but thies arfs are making kits really hard to justify

There won't be any kind of tight fit in that cowl .... That cowl swallows the RCGF 100 that I'm putting in mine, and mine is lightly wider than the DA, but also slightly lighter and more powerful .

man am i jelious my plane has not come in yet.can not wate.looks like yours will fly before mine.living in the great north has its drawbacks.but i juess it gives me lots of time to build.and spend money&money&money. please post some details of your build as i am quite new to large scale and tike all things.a little knolage can save others a lot of time&money.thanks hope it flies as good as it looks

I'm really hoping Mitsu takes some more pics for us. Something crazy about waiting for your new plane that makes you nuts. I'll have mine next week thursday. What baffles me is that I can't find much on this plane. Didn't this one arrive late last year? I've been out of the loop this winter. Trying to find my way.

Yeah, I've scoured the internet for articles, video and pics. I've even downloaded pictures of the Carl Goldberg Yak. Same covering scheme, different color. The more I look at he plane, the more I love the color scheme. I thought a 33%plane would be out of reach for me financially. My wife hates me spending money on anything. But at this price, I'll boldly face her wrath, as something this big can't just "blend
" in with my other planes![X(] Unfortunately I won't start building mine for about a month or so. I have to finish an 80" Extra from WM. I also have to get another engine for my EF 74" Yak. I gave the engine to my brother because I was going to sell the Yak. Surprisingly It didn't drum up much interest. Although in truth I didn't really advertise or talk about it much. It's a sweet nimble well behaved aircraft. So I'll just fly it and keep grinning. LOL

Well, my Yak arrives tomorrow. Guess I can stop begging for pics. I still haven't decided what I'm going to put on the business end of this plane. I'll probably try to find a used DA 100. I haven't been able to find a quality cheaper alternative. I'm not ashamed to say that I fly on a budget. I know people are buying some of the chinese engines and making them work. But I'm not a gearhead. I'd be in over my head. Doesn't matter I'll do what I have to and get this plane in the air.

dude you might want to hold of on the engine i have the dl 50 and like it better than my other brand.better yet the importer for ld canada tells me they have a 100 coming in the spring.the 50 only sells for 350 canadian i am hoping for 700 or so for the 100.to top it all off thies weigh less than the other brand. still have till friday to get my bird starting to pace .try to send me some pictures .you know how it is
