Biggest plane and smallest car
Hey guys,
I am thinking of getting a small hatcback like a Toyota Matrix or Jetta wagon.
Anyone have any experience with big planes in these cars. Can a 75/85cc class plane like the H9 SU-26MM fit without major surgery every time or should I stick to 50cc planes.
Thanks.

RE: Biggest plane and smallest car
My car is a 2002 Pontiac Grand AM. It's not all that small, but I can fit a TOC Aviation 33% Yak 54 in the car along with 2 40 size profile planes and a couple of small electric models.
My rudder and stabs need to come off, but the rest can be laid on top with some towels or blankets. Here are some shots of the Yak giong into the car first:
I probably should also say I don't think this would be possible with a 4 Door cause the middle post would get in the way of putting the fuse into the back.
Your hatchback probably wouldn't have that problem though.

Did you have to remove the horizontal stabilizers and stick the tail all the way through between the front seats ?

I owned a Pontiac Vibe which is a brother to the Matrix. The front passenger seat folds flat and so does the back seat. You can carry an amazing amount of stuff in that car. With everything folded, you can carry a stepladder with the rear hatch closed.

I just confirmed that the front passenger seat folds in the Matrix too. I will go and measure the length but this car seems like a great giant scale carrier

My son drives an xB and currently easily fits the GP Gene Soucy Extra in it. He has bought the Lanier 94" Extra and Yak too, after measuring his box many times and knowing the length of those planes. He hasn't built those planes so I can't say if they really fit, but he says they will. He folds the back seat flat and lays the front passenger seat back as far as it will go. Works for him. Kind of amazing that it will hold bigger planes than my Nissan hardbody which is limited by the bed size.

I used to hang out with a guy who used to have a Dogde Shadow hatchback and had a 84" WH Edge hanging out the back.
He just used some visegripes so the hatch couldn't close the ruder and tied it down. Looked funny but worked haha

Buddy of mine has the Toyota Matrix. He hauls his Hangar 9 Su-26 85cc without issue. Doesn't even have to remove the rudder.
I can fit the Hangar9 Carden yak in my Yaris with the spinner and rudder on and close the rear hatch.

Thanks for all the replies. I currently have a V8 Explorer but the 13MPG mileage is hurting and will hurt even more when the gas prices move back up to where they were before.
I am considering the Matix because it gives a good mileage and can carry large planes and looks cool too.

RE: Biggest plane and smallest car
I have been able to fit a 30% extra 300 along with 1 raptor 90 and a logo 10 plus all the flight line gear in my 4 door KIA rio. With the passenger seat pushed all the way back and laid all the way down the fuse would just barley fit. After too many trips to the field with an over packed car I just bought a stow and go mini van (had togo the minivan route so I could justify it to the wife) and havent had any issues with space since then.
