Great pics Gary, and I can attest to the fact that Gary uses every bit of the throw on his elevators!

Kevin, you will love using Robart hinges, don't be intimidated by them as they are very easy to install if you do as I outlined...

Well after weeks of work on the horizontal stabilizer, it is finally completed. Here's what it looks like.

Robert, you are correct (as usual), that's a full 90 degree deflection with only one side beveled!

Looks like 45° in the pics, which is still far more than I would ever use. Not including a profile that is.

Here are some photos showing how everything is fitting together. I will separate the halves now and bevel the elevator leading edges to 45 degrees...
You did a very nice job of shaping, you have a good eye Vincent and a great touch with the sanding bar. If I see things right, do you only 45 the area above the hing on both sides ?, thats what it looks like. I really like the Robart hinges, their all I use any more.

Wonderful job as usual, Leroy

PS Merry Christmas to all.

Leroy only the leading edges of the elevators are beveled, the top half above the hinge has a 45 as well as the bottom half of the hinge for a total of 90 degrees of deflection. The stabilizer remains flat.

Outstanding VJ! Now for a coat of varnish and it'll be ready to go. You're not going to cover that beautiful work are you?

That brings me to my next question: What photo editing software do you use? I mean, come on! Nobody can build that good... can they???

It's starting to look like art work, not unlike another plane you built. You do intend to fly this one don't you? Just kidding you my friend. While I'm at it, I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas, and blessings for the upcoming new year. May you all find time to enjoy some of the spirit of the season. God bless.

Vinnie is going to have to, all of his local friends are going to badger him to fly the heck out of this! After all, with DA-50 for power, he has to fly it!

Thanks David and Cliff. I will fly this plane, and I'm sure you will as well Gary!

With Christmas fast approaching, let me take the time to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas! Spend time with the people in your lives that you love, for they are what really matter...

You know really, Extra's and Edges are so nice to fly, in any fashion you wish, they are not just radical 3D machines, they just fly so well, period. Vinnie and I have a friend that is in our club and also works at the LHS named Joe. Not only is he knowledgable and a craftsman on par with Vinnie, he is a super nice guy and has been flying forever. When I was thinking about getting my first Extra, he said if you can fly that Ultra Stick, you can fly an Extra. Edges have that straight leading edge that makes them fly so nicely, especially doing harriers, elevators etc. They fly the same in all attitudes, inverted, KE, slow, fast, whatever. Everybody should have one, no matter what your flying style is.

Doug Lee promised me my stuff by Christmas, so I am drooling all over the place. Probably will start the building after the kids leave for Spring semester (academy 5 Jan, expensive school 12 Jan).

Should I put my BME 50 on this or the DL 50 I just got? To do the BME, I will have to move if from the (currently broken) AJ Slick 89" Edge.

Jim if it were me and those were my only two engine choices, I would choose the DL-50. Doesn't the BME have the carb sticking out the side? If it does will it fit in the cowl without cutting it? Better yet have you considered the DA-50R, at 2.94 pounds ( without standoffs ) and producing 5 HP it will prove to be perfect for this application.

+1
The side carb is a difficult packaging job. The DL-50 is essentially a DA-50 clone and would be an easier fit.

Thanks guys, it is good to know that the DL is a good choice! I have to slow down 'getting' things to fund the college that has turned out to be about double what was researched and planned for. Besides, my wife claims I have too many engines already and I have NOT let her see all of them. I have to be real careful about saying things are old and the new stuff is better least she get any ideas...

Merry Christmas one and all!

Going to the LHS to pick up some much needed supplies so I can start on the fin and rudder today. I wanted to go yesterday but the weather wouldn't allow it!

Wrong major?

Oh, we told her that it took a 3.0 to continue and the alternative was CC.

With wood now at hand, I started to frame out the fin. I had to make the vertical stabilizer core as seen in the plans. The wood used to frame out the fin and rudder is 5/16" stock which I was unable to buy, so I opted to frame it with something slightly thicker and later I will sand to the correct thickness.

Sander much better than planner.

I just got one of these. It was slightly damaged in shipping. waiting for a couple of parts to make it right.
Will let you know how it does on balsa when I get it set up.
Infeed belt is like ruff sand paper with incremental feed from zero on up.
Spring loaded pressure rollers hold material firmly to belt for feeding.
Looks like it will work sweet.

I know this seems like overkill but as a cabinet maker this will do more than just help build airplanes .

Would love to get a planer or sander like the type Kevin has posted, but I am buying a Jet spindle sander right after the new year...so it will be on my list of things that I want for now!

Here's what the fin looks like, it's been sanded and is ready for sheeting. I am now in the process of framing up the rudder, I will post some photos later of the progress...
