RE: 27% Cessna 421 Twin Turbo Prop
After lurking for months, (I've written One posting!) I sprung for a Precision Cut kit for the Hostetler 24% (the baby version!?) Cessna 241 at the still-great WRAM show in White Plains, NY last wknd. Am ordering fiberglas pieces, my queston, do the Fiberglass Specialties Cessna 210 tip tanks work believably on 421B & C versions of the model? Or does anyone have a better idea for locating or fabricating wingtip tanks? And, storing up all my questions (for the moment!) do the tip tank nacelles affect the performance, i.e., lift, of the wings? Thanks, very earnestly, for all these great postings, from you master builders. Very, very appreciated.

Ron,
This is one beautiful build. I've been enjoying your progress photos. Just wanted to tell you that your pilot will not need the leather jacket with the fur collar. That cockpit get's pretty warm at altitude with the sun shining in.

As far as the issue of wing tip tanks...this particular model will not have them. I do know that in some full scale applications, installation of tip tanks does in fact increase the useful load. So this may have the same effect on our models...
And the question regarding engine thrust...a high quality gyro will accomplish that job..
I've been sanding and glassing...so not much exciting to photograph.
Come on summer!!!

Thank you, Ron, for your quick response, and, again, for sharing what looks like a daunting, eminently satisfying, odyssey. If I can take advantage of you, again, do you know of any others who tackled the 24% or 27% 421 ? I'm seeking someone who may have built a version with tip tanks, with the thought of using the available Fiberglass Specialties Cessna 201 wingtip parts. I'm not a "rivet counter", armed with a micrometer, but I don't want it to look stupid, compared to the real 421's with wingtip tanks. I'll let you get back to your endless sanding!

Re: Precision Cut Kits' Cessna 421 24%
Rec'd my plans today from Wendell Hostetler, yikes! One should not say this about a female, but, "what a big tail!!" Next, the fiberglass parts, and some retract decisions, all of which are expensive, it appears...

First coats of primer applied to top half of the fuse. I plan to finish up around the front windshield and all side windows, and then install the lexan panels into the windows prior to painting. I must first prepare the top half for final finish prior to installing the rudder and stab permanently, so I can go inside the bottom and reinforce the joints to eliminate flex...which could result in flutter...Once this step is complete...I'll sheet and glass the bottom areas, prime and be ready for final sanding.
It's starting to finally look like a plane.....!

After much sanding, the top half of the fuse is in final primer coat. Instrument panel finished, side window openings final shaped and inner structure now painted. The lexan windows will be tinted with RIT dye to produce a "smoked" effect.

Front side windows and windshield now installed, front openings finished and primed. Outer wing panels fully sheeted, wingtips installed. Motors final fitted. The plane is going to be on display this weekend at the Fort Wayne War Memorial Coliseum. Then next week the wing filets will be built.

Dear Ron,
I will cease pestering you with beginner questions, as you have more to do than type tips responding to my dumb queries about building this plane, I realize. Nonetheless, a question(!) Is the PA IMAA event you are planning to attend w/ the 421, the Rally of Giants June 21st?
Thank you.

RE: 27% Cessna 421 Twin Turbo Prop
miniatureerections - I have built the 27% version of a B model and I used Stans Fibertech tip tanks for a Cessna 310 and they worked perfectly. About 3/4" short of being absolute 27% but I didn't build it to show. I'm not sure what your refering to in tip tanks for a 210? The Cessna 210 is a single engine with a high wing and I have never seen one with tip tanks.

RE: 27% Cessna 421 Twin Turbo Prop
Big thanks, catflyer, for your response: I, duh, meant to type "310".
Fiberglass Specialties makes tip tanks for the Bud Nosen 310, which, in 24%, scales out to about 9 1/2 feet, close enuf for the 10' tanks on some 421 versions. Co-incidentally, I brought the Hostetler 421 plans to my flying club meet tonite, and they were appropriately amazed, and also think I'm nuts to tackle such a project. I am a good modeler, but I need to complete a couple of kits, which have instruction books, before I begin the big Cessna. I have a sense that Mr. Hostetler is more than willing to help, but I don't want to pester him with minutia.
Any advice as to retracts? Too bad you're in KS, and I'm in CT. I am beginning to ponder just how few of these are actually built. Do you travel to any major flying events? Thanks again for answering...

RE: 27% Cessna 421 Twin Turbo Prop
miniatureerections:
I had Century Jet out of Louisville, KY build my retracts for me. They turned out fantastic and the owner of the company was a real pleasure to deal with. I bought my engine nacel's from No1 since he went turbo prop and didn't need them any more and the nose cone and windshield came from Fiberglass Specialties. I went with Fuji 64's for power, Futaba for radio and added a SmartFly Power Expander EQ10 to handle all the servo matching. I built the plane for my father for his 80th birthday. We actually owned a real 1973 421B for almost 30 years and he sold it after loosing his medical and bought a Citation. His heart is still in the 421 though so I built it to surprise him on Memorial weekend last year. I started the plane in January and had it ready to fly in May. Many 18 hour days at the building table. I didn't get the final paint job done and there are a lot of little things that need to be finished on it and in fact I'm working on it here over the next couple of weeks to try and get it finished up.
I dont want to Hijack Ron's thread so if I get a chance here in the next day or two I will start a thread and post a bunch of the pictures from my build.

RE: 27% Cessna 421 Twin Turbo Prop
Oh and one other thing miniatureerections, I don't get the chance to attend any big flying events. I drive a show truck for a motorcycle manufacturer and our busy season with all the rallys and such is the same time of the year as all the flying events. I do however get all over the country, just this past week I was in Salt Lake City, Reno, Santa Rosa & Newport Beach, CA, Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ and Artesia, NM and last weekend I was in Grand Rapids, MI. I'm now home for two weeks then I'll be headed back to Scottsdale for a week for AZ bike week then to Midland/Odessa, TX for a dealer open house then home for a weekend then back out to Laughlin, NV for a week for the Laughlin River Run. After that I'm booked every weekend except Memorial Day and 4th of July. I usually use the winter months to build but this year due to the slowing economy I took a voluntary 4 month leave of absence and went to Alaska to haul heavy equipment to Northern Canada so I didn't get anything acomplished.
