ExtremeflightRC Mini3D conversion
 

This was a fun little conversion. Certainly the easiest that I have done to date. The plane is impeccable out of the box, however I decided to recover since Chris and EFRC is local, I knew there would be more than a few at my field (and I like to be different). My wife and I sat down to watch ER and by the end of the show, we had the covering removed. I used white Ekonocote and Dark blue as well as Trans. Blue Solite and in two evenings, I had it recovered. I hope to get some flights on it this week. At just two clicks over half throttle is wants to pull out of my hand, so I think I have choosen the right power for it.

This shows the 3S2P slid in. There is velcro on the bottom of the plate it is resting on and the top of three formers keeps it from moving elsewhere. The front plate is held on by two 8-32 nylon bolts and blind nuts epoxied in. One on the top and one on the bottom.
The second picture shows how the pod slides out and of course the third picture is a homemade decal that informs of its intentions :)

Thanks. It has been too windy here to fly. I hope to get some in this weekend. With any luck there will be some video to go with it.

I am thinking seriously about this little guy since I still have the 2820/10 I got at SEFF last year on the shelf. I have 2 othr planes I could put it in, but neither are really what I want to fly.

Cant wait for your flight report.
I was thinking 2820/10 with your prop and 3s2p Kokam 1500's. How does that setup sound to you?

Hey Kirby,
Yes I flew it quite a bit. I ripped the gear out due to my field being too rough and havent found a good way to put it back yet. The performance is good on the 11x5.5, but I seriously recommend the 12X6 E on a pack that can handle up to 40a. My 3S2P TP's would only handle about 32 amps, so I couldnt push them that hard. On a 12X6 you will be about 36 amps and it will pull out of a hover easily. The 11X5.5 would pull out, but at a slow walking pace. I am trying to have some CF gear made for it so I can retrofit it inside the fuse. Otherwise, I will have to pick up a new one and convert it before SEFF.

hey guys... I have a problem.
I want one of these really badly for brushless but this is the stuff I have.

AXI 2808/16
Castle Creations 25 ESC

Will this at least fly sport stuff with this setup? Until I can afford better?
Can you get a gearbox for this axi that will alllow more thrust?
How can I get more power without replacing ESC, I would replace motor. Just not ESC. Not yet anyway.

Can you guys suggest something that woudl work "well" but not balistic without exceeding 25 amps?
Is this possible?

Looking at the above setup, I don't think the 2808 can handle the power necessary to fly this plane. Atlantaeflyer did a phenomenal job of overpowering his, but there is no comparison between the 2808 and 2820 series as far as their ability to handle enough Watts to fly the plane. From the looks of the tables at www.modelmotors.cz, the 2808 is capable of handling about half as much power as the 2820. This would be like putting a 4-cylinder Honda engine in a '69 Chevelle, and not even one that's been gone over by "tuners."

My son Andrew aka....3d&p flyer.... bought me a Mini 3D for my B'day at SEFF. We talked to you a lot there. By the way, thanks for all your help in chosing a power set up for my E-Magic from MEC.

Even though Jeff Meyers won't fly a pink plane I guess I will. Mine will have a AXI 2820-10 and a 11x4 prop with 8 Hecells slung under it. Andrew built most of ithe plane, but he had to go back to school so I finished it. I am ready to test it on the WKND if the winds are down. TTYL

Hey Stephen. It was a pleasure talking to you and Andrew at SEFF. Mark it on your calendar as it will be a month earlier next year to take advantage of the cooler weather. I have followed Andrews comments on the MEC for your Magic, so it sounds as things are still going well.
Congratulations on your M3D. It is a great plane. Keep me updated.

Jeanne was here on the WKND so flying was limited to sat morning and planes that can handle wind. I will try the Mini 3D tomarrow. I'm using 8 Hecells as a power source for the maiden flight. My son wants to be present but I'm leaving for Stone Mountain GA on Sat and want to check this plane out. It has been underconstruction for 2 months and a hanger queen for another. I just hope it looks this good Friday evening.

Business or pleasure? Stone Mountain is in my neck of the woods. 10 minutes northeast of Atlanta city limits. I am 35 minutes north of Stone Mountain. Plane looks good.

Going to see the sights. I always take a week off in Oct. before all the snowbirds return to FLA. After Oct I work a lot more and a lot harder as a Respiratory Therapist.

Maybe I will run into you at Atlanta Hobby. LOL!!!!!

I took myM3D and Avistar to the FF today. I flew the M3D today for the first time. My friend Sergio showed up as I was landing my Avistar and went over the M3D with me. He found a loose rudder servo which was fixed with some CA. I took off the plane in about 20 ft. I had the controls on full rates. Jumpy, my goodness!!! I put the Alierons to Low and trimmed out the plane. Sergio, a seasoned pilot, took over and put it through all the 3D we could think of. Then we had to put the elevator to Low. Straight up is like a rocket. It won't hover though. Sergio says it needs more rudder. I need a longer arm on it to get the throw. Landed in one piece. The LG is very weak. I will embed it with epoxy.

Love the M3D with the AXI. Do you think it will fly with a Speed 600 GD? I am going to try it after Andrew gives the AXI a try.

Good time at Stone Mountain. Atlanta Hobby turned out to be a Mailorder place. Where do you shop in Atlanta for your NOW needs?

Are you sure you went to Atlanta Hobby? That is where I get my now items. He has tons of motors, kits, props, gearboxes, batteries etc in stock.

Hobbytown of Gwinnett is the other place. Lots of E goodies.

I am not sure about the 600 GD

I called first and the guy said he was a mail order place but I could stop by if I called first. When I Stopped by the roads around the Airstrip were blocked off by construction equipment and survey equipment. It was the place on Kitfox at a small airport.

That is it. Although he does most of his business on line, he does sell out of the Hanger. He puts most hobbyshops to shame.

This is Andrew. I flew this airplane today. I thought it flew great. Crazy snaps and it had unlimited vertical. First flgith was great but then when we switched to li-po, I was doing some blenders, then tail spins to flat spins and all of a sudden the plane went out of control and i had intermittent elevator in a tail spin. It just dove into the ground barely missing the road.

The AXI 2820/10 needs the magnets glued backed on half of them. But my dad cannot get the can off. The allen nuts are too tight. HELP?!? [:@]

Don't stop flying it just because it crashed. Have fun with it. FREE FLIGHT in front yard! Inverted, low flybys and Hovers!!!! LoL :D

Got the can off w/o taking off the allen nuts. I removed a C clip and washer in the front. Those are some strong magnets. Had to glue five back in place one at a time. I used epoxy. I'll give it a test run tomarrow after the glue sets good.

Got the magnets glued in. Can spins freely. Will let the Epoxy dry overnight and try it later in the week. I have 3 days of vacation left to play.

The M3d has a broken fuse, caved in leading edge on the wing and smashed nose. Too much to fix now. I'm going to store it for now, pull the covering off later and check the frame when I am really bored. A loose connection at the RX seems to be the culprit for the crash.
