Yeah it was crashed.
following parts that are damaged or missing: Left rocker arm bracket SAI120S44 - Push rods SAI 120S39 - Push rod covers SAI120S40 - Intake manifold SAI150S69A.
The crankshaft was pushed back into the backplate too. Suspect is the crankshaft, the crankweb and crankpin might be bent or the threaded end too.

what size displacement is it?
It is their .25 engine. One can rotate the upper cylinder casting to make it left or right exhaust or rear exhaust too. Like you can with the MVVS engines.

Love Saito 4-strokes!! Have a bunch of them. Enjoy the sound and the dependability and power. Have used commercial fuel and have hadgood luck mixing my own brew of methanol, Klotz, castor oil, and a bit of nitro usually 10 ~15% Just recently bought a new in the boxSaito FG-20. They are built onthe 120 Saito motor block and have a separate ignition and a very tiny spark plug. A club member made the comment that they do not produce the power my 120 on methanol produces. I like this new Saito 20cc 4-cycle as it has a new designed Saito pumper carburator similar to the Walbro carbs on my Quadras, Zenoas, Maloneys,and Sachs 2-stroke ignition motors. This Saito runs on gasoline!! (with a little chain saw oil added). Will not cost as much to operate this little 4 stroke!!!

Anyone out there have any experience with the gasoline Saitos?? Figured I wouldmountthis motor in a60 size plane to try it out.

The Saito FG20 is made more like a Saito 125 glow engine. The FG20 has nothing in common with a Saito 120.

The Saito FG20 carb has a pump but it is rather weak, It is best that you have your fuel tank mounted as close to the carb as possible just like on a glow engine.

The are a couple Saito FG20 threads over in gas engines and a couple other threads about Saito gas engines in general.

The Saito FG20 has not worked out well for 3D. It works better for war birds and sport planes.

I just eyeballed the stack and put it on the 125. I think a lot of people tried it, at least from reading on RCU.

The idea behind my velocity stack is that it is positioned directly in the prop stream and also against prop blade pressure. My velocity stack has a slight negative contour opposed to the examples shown here. I will get the picture for you later.

I measured my engines static pull many times before the stack and after. I gained a total of 10% in pulling kilos after making the mod and re-tuning the needles.

To me it sounds like it could be bearing noise.
Went up for another flight motor died on take-off.Restarted the motor to check needle settings

Using S&W 15% fuel the whole life of the motor to which I add an additional ounce or so of castor per gallon
just to be on the safe side however I do not run ATF for after run.
Motor has never had a crash, have been running it for probably 2-3 seasons and has approximately 6 hours on it.

Started doing a search thru the thread to see what I could find as far as diagnosing bad bearings,and I'm sure there must be 100 posts
on the subject, but with 800 something pages finding it is not such an easy task.

I finally flew my plane that has the Saito 1.8 engine in it. My first Saito and first Giant plane. SWEET!!!

The Saito 1.8 starts instantly with my regular starter after one turn over of the engine. I am running 5% nitro on all synthetic 2-stoke blend (Morgan fuel).

I am considering switching fuel after using up the existing gallon to 15% nitro, 4-stroke blend, probably all synthetic oil unless somebody here says that's bad.

I also plan on changing props from 16x8 to 18x6. Right now, with 5% nitro and 16x8 prop, I am getting 9000 rpms.

Any comments or suggestions? Does this seem reasonable to do with a Saito?

Sounds OK.

Make sure you have plenty of oil in that fuel. 17% synthetic doesn't get it. 20% synthetic would be nice or a little castor oil if that's all you can get.

This is very difficult to diagnose without seeing it. You could have a bearing issue as you stated or it could be something a bit more hidden. You could take the back cover off and give a look at the bearings - If they appear rusty that would be a confirmation of your suspicions. If they are not rusty I suggest you pack it up and send it into us for service. Our guys will take very good care of your engine for you.

Whjen I suspect I have bearing problems, I run the engine a little richer (get water drops on the intake tube) and I then "touch / feel" the area around the front bearing (note this is done arefully very carefully) while the engine is running.  If the bearings are dodgy they will heat up really quickly.  This is cause to pull the back plate off and have a look inside, rust equals the need for new bearings.
The other check is to put prop on engine secure it so it doesn't / can't move and with the prop horizontal try to rock the prop from side to side, any movement equals bearing change.
This last test was forst one if loss of power was experienced in the YS 53 and 63.  BTB I have just heard that YS are no longer producing either the 53 or the 63 can any confirm or deny please.

Sod you could take the prop off it and the plug too.Then turn the crank with your fingers,you'll feel it.Engine could be running lean too,i did the same with my 115.

This airplane really needs a bunch of noseweight. The best engine I've seen it with was a Saito 1.50 - and it still needed a bunch of lead in the nose to balance.

Have a question guys, did a search in this thread but came up empty..

I have a Saito 72 that I picked up used, it looked brand new and the price was right ($100.00), compression seemed to be fine as well...
I mounted it on a GP Reactor and it flies it very well, have 8 flights on it and I am tinkering with props and my low end...
I started out with a 12x8, the motor ran fine but it made the plane to fast, she was just over 10K.. I went to a 13x6 and it flies the plane much better and I am just under 10K.
I am looking for a 13x4W but all I can find in a "W" is a 14, would a 14x4W be to much prop for the 72, or should I try a 13x4?

My high end hits with the needle just over 1 1/2 turns out, well short of the recommended 2 1/2 turns out.. also, when I get my idle where I want it on the ground, it leans out in the air and I have to lower the trim tab about 5 clicks to land. I try running it at that setting on the ground and it won't run, I haven't messed with the low end needle yet as I will be changing props and fuel this weekend.. I was running 10% N with 18% Oil and plan on going to a 15%-20%
With 15% Nitro and 20% oil and a 14x4W, or a 13X4 prop, what kind of numbers should I be looking for on my low end as well as high?

Thanks a bunch for any help, it's been a long time since I had a saito, I forgot how good they run and the power they make..

Forget about any recommended number of turns, some Saito end up set at one turn out with 1.5 being the mean average. That 2.5 is a starting point as is the LS 1/16th" inside the throttle arm rec. Let engine tell you the setting not the other way around.

The plane I am using my Saito on has 1.5 lbs of noseweight on it to balance the CG (for a total weight of 14 lbs). It still has plenty of power to haul around, but 13 lbs or less would have been ideal. What would be a good airplane to use a Saito 1.8 without having to add a load of weight to balance?

H, I'm one of those guys who like to use engines on the smaller end of the recommendations, I'd rather fly a plane around the sky than simply steer and engine around the sky. Maybe riding in my brothers Cessa 182 spoiled me.
