RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Rev i can see that the snow has literally turned your world upside down!
As for me im soaking wet. i should fly in the rain, but! i did and the 400 flew! 2 successful and 1 very lucky flight. the lucky one was due to the engine stopping on finals, i dont know why it did it as it restarted fine. I think it may have been low fuel in the tank while in a decent that caused temporary fuel starvation. In anycase i JUST made it back into our flying field but i did have to clatter the left wing through the top of a 3m (9 foot) hedge. that flicked the model to the left and was caught with rudder leaving me with no choice but to dive and then pull as much as i could before hitting the ground. Now i dont know exactly what happened as i lost sight of the model the moment i pushed the nose down due to the crest of the hill. After a second i pulled hard up and hoped for the best. Clearly luck was on my side as the only damage is an impact mark on the right wing and thorns and branch damage to the left leading edge. I will have it fixed tomorrow evening. I will also upload the video (not of the crash) later tonight.
Also the 21x8 menz seems to be a good prop in the air

It has snowed 10cm overnight so I am flooding the 400 with afterrun oil and putting it away for now. Time for the Ski-Planes
With the snow the building season has begun and I am working on the new Airframe for the 400...

Well its forcast that we might be in for a cold winter over here but noone really knows. As i use a little castor in my fuel i dont tend to have issues with rust so i rarely use after run. Also, being nuts, i fly in the snow and cold anyway!

Really like that video. Nice flight on that Pacer. No issues with propstrike with that rather soft gear?
We fly the whole winter too but I tend to go electric when its cold. Last winter we went flying @-20°. That was rather nippy and my glow Yak-9 would only start directly out of the warm trunk. After the first flight it was just too cold. The electric guys had no problems.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
I was very worried about the prop as its 1 inch larger than the old prop i had on it and i did bash it a few times. But with the new flaperons the landing is more much better and i can put it down more softly. With our lumpy field however its not always easy, especially when the ground is frozen! but that fun is yet to come. As for the cold we dont get down to -20. Its about -5 at most and usually we can get the engines going even if they are a little stubborn. Once run as long as you restart them before they cool off completely they go straight away without issues.
One thing i have found with the 400 is that it seems to have a narrow window of CHT that it likes. For example if i keep flying around giving it the full range of throttle from idle to full in a 'lively' flying fasion then everything is ok, but if i float around at low power for a while and then open up it takes mayb 20 or 30 seconds to warm up again and come back on song. Thats also why i dropped a pot on takeoff. I have now reset my glow switch so that i have 3 options selectable from the tx switch. I have glow off, glow upto 20% throttle for normal use and glow upto 60% thottle for takeoff cruising and landing.
Btw, how big is the yak 9? i like the yaks

I have my glow running form 5%-50% Throttle all the time. Haven't lost a cylinder in ten flights.
The yak was a small aircombat Plane with 950mm span and a 3,5cc TT Engine with OS carb. Really a great flyer but lacking aircombat opponents I sold it. I really want to build a larger yak-9 for a laser 150. The Idea is rather intimidating. Build it from hih density foam, cover it completely with .5mm Aluminium. Put in all the rivets and stuff and then make a mold for full composite...

Whooaaaa Rev that sounds like a great idea.... But why not do one around 80'' span for the laser 300v? and, do a yak 3 becuse then i can make it look like this one!

Why 70'?
Basically two reasons.
One: I want to do more than just one and the market is rather larger for a 1,6-1,8m Model. Most will want to do it electric and thats just a big question of cash in the 80' size.
Two: I would like to make it possible to use a wide range of small gas engines and those cool glow four strokes eg the Laser 150, the Saito 200Ti. etc.
I am currently learning CAD so I can draw my own formers, spars, etc. but thats really really difficult. Friend of mine has a step four to do the milling.
Really very enthusiastic about it but it will just have to wait till te SiSt is finished.
becuse then i can make it look like this one!
I am currently reading
and I have not decided on 3 or 9 yet.

I purchased a Saito 200Yi this spring on e-bay.
It is NIB from a museum collection. It was originally on a wooden display stand, but I opted to forego the stand for a better price.
It is going to be the next test run project after I do comparison runs on my FA150CDI, FA180, FA180CDI, FA180HC CDI.
I already have a C&H CDI system for it. W/the crank offset 30*, it is an even firing twin W/TDC on both cylinders happening simultainiously. The cam timing is such that the firing order is 360*. It could easily be converted to "twingle" buy changing the cam timing on 1 cylinder.
Not sure about the YAK, but engine drawings enlaged to full size showed that the 200Ti would fit within the cowl of the Brian Taylor 83" MK I-V Spitfire.
I could mail you some of those full scale 200Ti drawings if it would help you. I have front & left side view drawings
I have also since checked the actual engine in an actual BT MK I-V Spitfire cowl from RC Vic. There is 1/4" clearance on the front intake rocker cover.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Ok well i just did some number crunching and 72.5'' span is 5th scale!!! i forgot the yaks were so teeny! a 5th scale spitfire is 88 and hurricane 92 inches. no wonder they went like stink. Anyway, an exact 5th scale would be great as it will be very close to the same scale as the ESM La7 (its 4.8 scale) and the new ESM Mig 3 (5th exactly). Also pilots and all that are easy to find at 5th scale. And if its that size (as you say) i can use laser 150, my new mystery project, or, for fun, a 160v
Will you do it esm style? that is glass fuz built up wing?

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
1/5th is where I am going.
The plan is to prototype a glas/herex fuse with a foam core wing. If it flies satisfactory a second foam wing will also be sheeted with metal and a mold made.
The final plan is full composite. That will be quite a large project (especially financially) but I have done some quite impossible tings with composites in the past (my "meister" work was a 1:1 scale copy of an original VDM Prop Blade for museum 109's) and so I guess I am up to the job.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Im sure it will be sweet. My only worry with full composite is weight. at that span it wants to be about 13 lbs with those little skinny wings. My 70'' P40 is 13.5 but i have alot more wing area
Also, the full size had wooden sheeted wings so if we do the same it will be scale! Personally i would like either foam core or built up wings over glass. but thats justmy preference

You are right about the wooden wings (apart from some prototypes like the yak-9P) so maybe a built up wing would make sense.
On the other hand I really want to do a full composite plane... The backupplan is a Zero

whats the performance of the Ti on something like an 18x8?
Also there are quite a few zeros. How about a Ki61?
