RE: ASP vs. OS
I can give you my 2 cents for what it's worth. I have an ASP .46 and an OS .46 both 10+ years old. Both run fine with few problems. The biggest problem I had was with the ASP and keeping the muffler attached. One of the mount points broke.
10+ years though...flip a coin. (I would go with the OS if your budget permits.)

RE: ASP vs. OS
OS quality is more consistent than ASP by a long shot.
I have a few ASP engines, they're not my favourites and there is a noticeable difference in performance between two engines of exactly the same model.
I'm no OS fan but if cost wasn't an issue, I'd take an OS over an ASP any day.

RE: ASP vs. OS
I've had 4 OS 1.08s I loved them and wish i hadn't let them go. My only complaint was the ball link throttle arm, a real pain to get smooth. I ran two of them on UCDs, what a kick in the pants.

RE: ASP vs. OS
I have 1 OS 1.08 and a couple of Maggie 1.08s. All 3 run very well and normally 1-flip start. As Dave said, the Maggies tend to be torquers. Mine run best on a 15-8 or 16-6 prop. The OS 1.08, a supurb engine, seems to run well no matter what I put on it.
This past weekend I was at a warbird meet and one of the fliers had a Cermark F-16 with an OS 1.08 with a long tuned pipe and a short, high pitched prop. It ran really well and was pretty fast.
The instructions for the Mag 1.08 recommend a small prop, 13-8 or 14-8. I found these sizes are disappointing. The Mag .91XLS turns the small props just as well as the 1.08. It's only when you get the rpm down in the grunt range that the Mag 1.08 shines. Both of mine are on scale planes that a buddy of mine built.

RE: ASP vs. OS
The FSR's are quite a bit heavier than the BX. The ASP only weighs about an ounce and a half more than a .91 4 stroke. I have an ASP and an FSR and love them both. If I were needing another 1.08, I'd have to go with the ASP because of the price. I don't know about the RED heads, but the series 3 ASP 1.08's have an OS 7D carb on them.

Undoubtedly, the OS is the higher quality engine, but the fly enters the ointment when comparing them, because each is designed for a different application than the other.
Need a high rpm capable engine? The OS is the only choice of the two. Need a low rpm torquer? Both are qualified, but I suspect that the ASP is slightly stronger on large props.
Obviously, the better built of the two would be the OS. But, sometimes "good enough" is good enough. Don't dismiss the ASP, especially if you can get it at a good price.
My ASP 1.08 (Redhead) was a great engine in its own right. It wasn't an OS, but nothing but an OS is.

Thanks Ed. i just picked up an OS 1.08 on the buy sell part of rcuniverse. got it for 175. i wanted a higher rpm style motor anyway. so the OS was a good deal for me.
thanks again for the help.

RE: ASP vs. OS
I got lucky last year and picked up a BX1.08 in pristine shape. It now wears a Davis diesel head . Its been a while since its run, huge prop (do not remember size, super idle it is slated
for a big telemaster (most likely this is overkill) martin
my biggest ASP is a 90 nice engine but OS qualilty it is not

RE: ASP vs. OS
I had a red head 1.08 years back. It never ran good... not even once, always overheated no matter what I did.
My friend's OS 1.08 was a beast. He too had an identical red head ASP 1.08, and had the same issues. That's why he went the way of the OS.
With that being said though.. he did have a regular 1.08 ASP that ran nicely, and I've had a couple .61 and .91 ASP's that were great engines. Just think the red head was a lemon.
