Default best .40 sized engine

well i have a spad that has had a magnum .91 4 stroke, gms.47, ax55 and magnum .40gpa on it.
all of those engines have gone to other planes. i am looking for a .40-.55 sized engine and i was just wondering which one would you concider the best
i like the gms.47 a lot, both of the magnums have never deadsticked on me, and the ax 55 is a pain in the rear to tuned right (just breaking in)
the only criteria, keep it cheap. the plane is tail heavy so a little nose weight wont hurt, i usually run it below half throttle (just putting around)
i was thinking of the ST gs-40 or maybe a ..... i just dont know so many good choices
i wouldnt be opposed to a used engine if someone has a (or a few) old 40 sized engine in a box they dont want ill buy it from them, ill replace bearings/clean them and what not, pm me if you want to sell me one

Put a magnum 52 on it =)

Or put a SK 50 if you want a big propeller....

You will get a lot of opinions here!!

In the Magnum line, I would consider their 46XLS over their 52XLS. The 46 is more of a torque engine versus the 52 being a speed engine. But the question is what attribute would you want.

The Super Tigre is a darn good engine but has a situation that a lot of people don't understand and complain about. Their carb is effectively a "three needle" carb; it has a mid-range adjustment. Actually, there isn't a third needle, but rotating the fuel nipple in the carb body up or down effectively leans or richens the mid-range mixture. What happens is they don't do squat and complain about part throttle performance.

The ST is $15.00 less than the Magnum at current list prices. But the difference is less as HobbyPeople doesn't charge freight.

I've heard also very good things about the Supertigre 45, which speeds up more than the 51.

What I think...is pick up the engine you want the most? do you need nose weight? go for the heavy like super tigre, or maybe SK, or even the magnums.... if you want a lighter take a tower, gms... I don't even know what I'm saying, in this segment, you have plenty of posibilities, pick the one that you want the most.
Engines are pretty running machines anyway...that's why I like model airplanes..because they need engines =)

"Best" .40-sized engine would usually evoke conversations about Enya or Webra 2-strokes. The Super Tigres mentioned are all good choices; the GS-40 and GS-45 are better for high rpms with average prop loads while the G-51 is more of a torque-producer that can turn bigger props well.

I've got two Thunder Tiger .46's and they always handled very good. Other guys at the field had recommended them to me. They all like their's. I bought one and it was great. Bought a second one, it's also great. Powerful and reliable. Never a burned out glow plug or deadstick.

ok im down to 2 engines. magnum 52 or st 51. which one should i buy?
its for a gp rapture that im trying to learn pattern with. theirs a gms .47 w/ 10x7 on it now wwhich runs well, but if im going to buy a engine might as well buy a more powerful engine and put the gms in another plane.

I like my Super Tigre 45. It has been around a long time. I also like my Magnum .46, 52. For power, the 52 flew my heavy Lucky stick like it was a light weight. Take offs were about a 3 foot roll into vertical climb outs. I thought the wings were going to be ripped off on the high speed fly by's. take your time to break in the .52 Magnum and have a great high power engine. I had to put fuel tubing over the needle valve instead of the clicker.
