Jombo, you're off by a couple of hairs
in the engine you should have 3 shims, a .1, .2 & .3mm (not .04mm as you stated).
The manual says run .5mm for 30% nitro.
So... you need to combine the .3 + .2 shims to total .5mm
No need for a caliper, it is obvious that one shim is thin and other really thick... the .2mm will be the middle one
Understand?

i pulled mine out to check them and a silver and one copper is .04mm, i dont see how it could possibly be .03mm. i dont have digital calipers just the ones with the lines on them so that may make a difference.

Don't shim it untill after a gallon!??, I must be way confused, I thought you dont REMOVE the shims until after a gallon?
ORIGINAL: 46u
The only thing I would do different from the instructions is use 20% to break it in and do not shim it till after at least a gallon.

Sorry if I phrased it wrong but yes do not remove or change the shims till you have at least a gallon of run time on it.

RE: STS Engines
^^ if you have the V2 engine series then you have to break in the engine for at leased one gallon before moving any....you do because this engine is so tight that you need the shims to reduce the compession

RE: STS Engines
i dont think you have that right or i may be wrong , i thought since your running a lower nitro content you use less fuel to ignite less compression, higher content (more compression) more fuel. isint that with full size cars higher octane more compression less compression lower octain.

RE: STS Engines
I do not have a 30 or any 30 head shims but I just open a new pack of 28 shims and this is what they measure. One copper is .1mm, one is .2mm and the silver one is 3mm. Like I said when I got both my D21B engines they only had to shims.
So for 20% you only run the silver shim. But you cold run the .1 as wll to be on the safe side.

RE: STS Engines
If you look at the explode view it shows all engine have one of each so I do not think there will be any difference. If you go to the link I posted above you will see. It plainly says as the instructions for ALL their big blocks are the same.
Up to 20% .3mm Will it really says under but I feel this is up to!
25% .4mm + or - .1mm
30% .5mm + or - .1mm
Now it is your engine so people many do as they like but do not talk bad about the engine if you have problems and do not fallow the advice of those that have been working with these engines for a while. The pinch is so tight and the compression is so great more shims during break in puts less stress on the engine.
Here is the link again.

RE: STS Engines
off topic, but...
46u, I learned a little trick from my dad.
Never keep digital or dial calipers in your toolbox. if you have vernier calipers, nobody else knows how to read em so they don't borrow em

So true as I have had people ask to borrow mine I hand them to them and they hand them right back. All so vernier calipers can take more of a beating with out getting messed up.

RE: STS Engines
Hey all! I recently ordered an sts .30 with tuned pipe. Hopefully it will be here in the next couple of weeks. I would like to know if there is a clutch that anyone would reccommend to rplace the original. I will be putting it in a Savage X. Also if anyone who has run one of these engines can give me any tips and tricks for setting it up. Thanks.

Yes yes, allways seal your engine.. saves you alot of time if it leaks to already have it sealed since you dont have to clean it out either

RE: STS Engines
BCKoots atleast you have an Axial 32 engine.. i'm stuck with my F4.1 for now.. sluggish engine..
4-6 days for it to come here? pffft 4-6 weeks if they dont get it mooooving soon
lets see who gets their engine first
vernier calipers?? easy to read.. never use anything else.. dont trust those digital once.. rather just use the good old vernier calipers :P
anyway.. internet got more guides about vernier calipers then needed.. so if you forget you can allways relearn..
anyone knows how many gallons the bearings can handle.. and sleeve and.. piston?
