RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I just returned from vacation in Mexico and will be getting back to work on the jug. I received the finish set from Mirce, and this morning I also ordered the detail set from him. He provides all the panels, hatches, inspection covers and also templates to do the raised surfaces on the rudder and elevators with built up primer. Here are a few photos that he posted on his Meister build thread.

The stickers are about as thick as HVAC foil tape. It shows through the paint as a raised panel or rivet. I was cutting all the panels out of the tape and it was driving me crazy trying to get them perfect. This is a much better option for me personally.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I have used vinyl "stick-on" rivets on a couple of projects with great results. You don't want to put them under the primer, particularly if you use a high build primer. Rather they go on over the primer and under the finish paint. On my Hellcat some of them are under as many as 4 layers of paint and are still perfectly visible. On my Harvard I used the vinyl rivets and then put a drop of white glue on the vinyl to represent a raised, or domed, rivet head. The white glue will spread to the edge of the vinyl and stop which keeps all the rivets a very consistent size. Time consuming but worth the effort. I still prefer the brass tube/soldering iron method for flush rivets in some applications but vinyl works good too and their is no substitute for vinyl when it comes to doing raised rivets in my opinion.

I'm anxious too Fabio, believe me. But as Chad mentioned, the vinyl is the last thing to go on before paint and unfortunately I'm not quite ready for that yet. I'm afraid if I put the rivets on to soon they will fall off due to over-handling.
I haven't been posting much because I am still priming, sanding, and finish filling the minor imperfections with Bondo (Kinda boring)
I am just about ready to panel line the wing and do the primer filler on the front of the rudder and elevators, I will post some pics of that when I get to it, hopefully by Monday.

Started applying the vinyl this morning to the leading edge of the elevators. Mirce was supposed to supply a negative template of these areas and then I build it up with primer. What he sent was a positive, so really all I have to do is apply the vinyl and seal it with a lite coat of primer. No big deal as it will actually be a little easier.

I finished up the rudder and elevators and put a lite coat of primer on, I think it looks pretty good. The transfer tape provided makes getting the vinyl in the right spot the first time very simple.
Will start panel lining the wing this week.

Some of the guys I fly with told me it's taking me to long to put this plane together, 14 months to this point may be a little long, but I think I'm doing pretty good and not getting burned out in the mean time. What do ya'll think?

Your doing good, I spent 20 months on my 1/3 Waco. All the detail stuff takes a while but is well worth it in the end.
Later!!

LOL Chad, No I don't think so, not detailed like I'm doing this one. There are a handful of guys at our club in Austin that build and do all the detailing, but most of the members assemble ARFs and/or fly 3D, it's really a shame. Fact is, at our last club meeting we found out that out of all our events this summer, the Warbird was the one that generated the least amount of cash. We only had 10 pilots show up and we just barely broke even. So with that said, we won't be having a Warbird in 2013, They will maybe replace that event with another Electric or Heli Fest. It's kinda upsetting, but we have to change with the times or our club will suffer.[&o]
Anthony, I think you mentioned in your Contender thread that you lost that Waco, terrible news. Sorry for your loss, I didn't see pictures, but I'm sure she was a beautiful plane.
Thanks for your input guys.

The fuse is basicly ready for paint after I add the vinyl rivets. She is going back in the house and I will get the wing out this week to do panel lines. My lovely wife said I could set up a stand in the house and work on the wing if I promised not to make a mess.

Gary,
tell your club members that the kit didn't have an expiration date on it and it will be done when it's done..
Personally I think you are doing it at the perfect speed, I am getting ready to getback on mine.. Your thread will help me a bunch....... I will have to talk to Mirce about getting a set like yours, it will make life a bit easier..lol and the price is right...
I put together a few other projects and had a great flying season while waiting for Robart to come out with my gear, they were supposed to be out last March I think and are still not available... I am gonna give it till October or so and if not, then i will get something else for the 47.. I put my build on hold waiting for them and can't really go any further till I have the gear...
Anyway,
your 47 looks great, your doing an awesome job and I will enjoy following the finishing of her. You got plenty of folks that can apreciate all the work that goes into it, so forget about what you club members say...

I don't know what the heck is going on with RCU but when I go to post there is a big whited out area in front of where I want to type???
Anywho? I got the bottom of the wing panel-lined today and shot with primer. Line's are pretty close to scale. I will wet-sand it back a little, then add the vinyl before I lite primer it one more time

Gary looks great as usual.
Are you going to take the chart tape off after you prime a second time?
Sold one of my creation today...boo hoo....Bitter sweet feeling.
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1724448
The gentleman came all the way from Canada six hours away to grab the plane.
He paid what I was asking for, but I am still sad to let her go.
I primarily fly giant scale warbirds and for some reason 60 size planes, even though more convenient to transport, don't seem to fulfill me when I fly them, like the giant scale do.
Anyway since I got some extra cash now, I can repair my P-51 and start finally the GS TF p-47 that you guys already started....
With family, work and all it will be a long project but I will try to maiden it next spring which around here is around late April early May.
I have all the components already, Kit, G62, Robart retracts and tail wheel, Robart Aluminum wheels, razorback canopy, Fiberglass specialty Cowl, Top flite cockpit, E-bay GI Joe .
I will glass it and flush rivet it.
I will post some pics in the next few days to show progress.
I guess welcome aboard to myself....
Fabio

Yep, I'm going to take the tape off after I get the vinyl with a lite coat on it.
Well, welcome to the build Fabio, you have always kinda been here though That's a good looking Jug that you sold. I don't know about that one but my 60 size flys well, she came out pretty heavy at almost 13#'s but it still fly's ok. I'm hoping to see a huge difference in the way this big one flys, I hope it feels a little "lighter" on the wing.

Hi Gary,
Are you using solvent based paints over your vinyl?
I've tried this on a couple of things and haven't had good results. Specifically, I tried using some rustoleum metalic silver over some areas I've applied vinyl to and the vinyl didn't fair too well. It created spots where it looks like the vinyl either bubbled up or melted.
Thanks,
Russ

Hi Russ,
That's a good point that you bring up there. The primer I am using is solvent based, the lite coat I put over the elevators and rudder had no affect on the vinyl. As for the paint, I have not ordered it yet but I am almost 100% sure that I am going to use Klass Kote epoxy. I will have to ask them when I order if they think it will cause any reaction towards the vinyl.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Hi Gary,
After looking at it again this morning.. it looks like the issue is with the adhesive. The places where it got messy were around the edges of each dot. I did discover something else though, I am using plane craft type vinyl (just what my wife had laying around). Note that I'm cutting these myself so I think I'm using the wrong stuff. It looks like this stuff isn't durable enough for this type of use. I will most likely need to look for some Oracal permanent adhesive vinyl and try that.
Thanks,
Russ

Russ, that is exactly what my vinyl material is. I looked on the back and it says Oracal Economy Cal 641. I think you may be on to something there, I don't know where one can get it here in the states, as you know mine came from Yugoslavia from Mirce. I am pretty sure it is the same stuff that is used for car and bus wraps, so sign companies should have it. Pretty durable stuff no doubt.
