My experience agrees with you..........on the kit built version. The ARF is another story. The wing tube is too short, making it easy to fold a wing under High G manuevers.

I found out the hard way.

I have the recommended 3 degrees on the main wing when mounted. What do you experts think? I am hoping I can get away with these floats! If not, what do you suggest? Thanks in advance!
It's difficult to say if those floats will work. They won't be ideal. I think the main problem will be that they don't extend in front of the prop. Also, if they sink too deep in the water they will be useless. Make sure you have a boat available to retrieve.

So you don't beef up the center section of the wing? I was also going to add 1/8th in. ply to thicken the fire wall and reinforce inside the forward fuse with 1/16th ply. I don't think that would add any significant weight and it will make it much stronger.

I don't see anything wrong with adding some beef to the wing center section.. If you add barn door ailerons, I suggest that you beef up the area where the aileron is removed from the wing, especially in the aileron bay corners.

I don't feel that the firewall and nose need beefing. I didn't do anything special to my 91 Surpass powered model.

I converted mine to a bolt on wing, with dowels holding the leading edge. I felt that the windshield pillars were weak and I tied everything together better by adding a ply bulkhead to the top front of the cabin area. I illustrate it, here. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/kit-...r-sport-5.html

I attached a few pic.

One shows the reinforcement around the aileron bays.
One shows the windshield pillar mods
One shows some interior cabin reinforcement gussetts.

I had 3 ARF's without any mods to the structure with Saito .91's...no problem. Sold them all with many, many flights on them. My current one is kit built with a 15cc gasser. No structural changes except for bolt on wing. No issues so far. That is my experience but others could have had problems, things happen. With a .91 a little extra weight caused by adding material to add confidence would not hurt a thing. The plane will have more than enough power to do just about anything you want and then some.

Thanks!

I got busy, and the Kadet Senior has not been maidened. I got as far as to get the engine running and the fine tuning done. The wind increased, that afternoon, and I took the model home. It never made it back out to the field, as my flying time was so limited.

I did maiden a Kadet Senior Sport ARF, though.

Tom, I'm looking at doing similar to a Mk II. Was curious as to the rear spar on your Sr. Is that in the stock location or did you do other reworking in the wing as well? On the Mk II, there is not an upper rear spar and the bottom rear sheeting is only 1.5" wide. I'm thinking ailerons that are 25% of chord would be a better sized considering I'm reducing the dihedral to .5". Any thoughts on this?
Any chance of joining the club as well?

On my Senior, the rear spar is in the stock location. I added some balsa stock in the aileron bays. This added strength and provided an area for the hinges to be secured.

Aileron size is up to you. My Kadet's are huge. For my flying style, they'll be fine. They were designed to take advantage of that rear spar and use it has the aileron mount hard point. If I were to do it again, I would make the chord of the ailerons about 20% less.

You're going to like that Mk-II with a near flat wing - I'm totally in love with mine, which is near the same, .5" on each side (1" total), and that's with the stock ailerons. 25%-chord is a LOT of aileron, even for barndoor types. I would be much more than interested in seeing how that'll work out. Hydro Junkie, you've been around since the beginning - of course you're in. Gotcha logged, AT LAST, with #196. Welcome to the SIG Kadet Brotherhood - finally!

Wing panel one is coming along, still need to put the servo/horn mounts in, changed the wing tip as well I think it will look good when covered.

Hi TIM, the plane with floats in the photo is not a Kadet, just a scratch build very similar back to 80's, floats were available in Italy those years, but too small, I needed full throttle to keep the model floating

Just picked up a Kadet senior, this will be my twenty second plane build and one of my first R/C planes I built back in 93.

Aha! And another young'un checking in - - HI Bumpie! Welcome to RCU!!!!! 22 builds - impressive, and the Senior's always a great subject. I think I might just have to do one of my own if/when my Mk-II ever wears out - I have NEVER done a "stick"-build like a Senior, and I've been at it since 1955.

So, what's the plan? 3 or 4 channel? Engine? Hey man, y'can pass on ALL the goodies.

.

I thought that it was a Federal law that all modelers had to build a Kadet Senior.

I started building around the same time as you, Like you, it took years before I built my first "stick" model. It has become my favorite construction method. You may want to try it.

I needed a fun project, just got done or almost done with a Balsa USA fly baby.

Looking over the plans last night, I gotta say theirs a lot of stick work and build for that matter, not sure if the Kadnet is a beginners build, but I did pull it off back in 93.

I will for sure build it with ailerons and cover it the same on the box using ultracoat with the possibility of it being a taildragger, and a OS52 four storke for the power plant.

I will post pics of the build as it progresses and this is a 1985 kit.

I need to do anothe stick built one of these days I guess I'll have to stop looking and buy a Kadet kit now to figure out which one.

You guys are right about me needing a stick-build - I know that. Gotta admit I'm a bit embarrassed, having to admit that I've never done it. HOWEVER, got a question - do the old Guillows kits qualify? My first 3 builds were those kits (back in 1955-56).

I've never been able to complete a Guillows kit. If you can build them, they more than count.

Here's my current stick and twig build. It's hard to tell, but it's a Luscombe Silvaire.

As you can see, I really like this trpe of construction.

When I first started building , I built at least 1 Guillows type kit a week.. I could not stop ! I think thats how I got allergic to CA. I still see old kits and plans and I want to enlarge them, and start building for light RC.. the addiction is bad. I was just looking at my enlarged Super Sinbad thinking THIS is the year I finish it. Then I saw the old SPARKY fuse and wing and thought how many times I have ALMOST started to build a 200 percent version of that as well...

If I had a large heated building I would be broke, divorced, and living in it ! ;P

Art, can I offer you another bite of elephant? hahahahah Keep going man. Posted some new DR1 pics over at Brand X as well

I've built a couple of Guillow's planes. Biggest was the 36" Cessna 172. All in all, came out fairly nice. Then the unfortunate happened. Someone decided to see if it would fly and threw it across the yard. Since I built it as a static, it wasn't balanced to fly and, needless to say, it was trash after it's one flight

I'm SO glad to know I'm not the only one. My very first, a DR1, got a .010 or .020 (can't remember which - too many decades between now and then) mounted on the nose, but it WAS balanced decently. Seeing that critter climb out over the trees and sailing off was the trigger for an instant life-long love affair with airplanes.

Never did find it again, but that didn't matter. I had a new one on the building board (my mom's dining room table) within a week.

And that was the beginning...

I have a Guillow's DR1 hanging from the ceiling in my workroom, which I built 45 or so years ago and often have thought of trying to fly it, but never got the nerve. The other Guillow's planes I tried flying with rubber never survived more than a few flights and this one looked even more unflyable. Maybe it's something to think about again with very small electronics.
