Looks good! Congratulations on the newest addition to the family! It's always nice to have grandchildren so you can get them all hopped up on sugar and send them home to their parents. If they have a long car ride ahead of them that's even better!

Watching this build thread with interest. I had a Nosen Citabria .40 given to me several years ago; still got the wing, but lost the fuselage in a move a couple years back. It needed a _lot_ of repair, but I never could find a set of plans for it. Recently got another kit, but tho the seller said the plans were in it...they ain't.

Anyone that's got a set, I'd be more than happy to pay for a copy of those plans, including postage, or pay for the cost of scanning them to *.pdf for an e-mailed copy. I'd really like to build another fuselage for this wing, and then build the kit while I fly that one.

I've got the VK Neiuport 17, still in the box. Couple friends of mine saw it on my shelf, opened the box, and stepped back in horror. One of them's never put together anything more complicated than an ARF trainer; the other even has someone put together foam RTFs for him.

There just ain't many builders left anymore...

My VK Models DR-1 is the most fun I have had building in years. I highly recommend doing a stick build from time to time it gets you stretching those building skills.

Hey Jim, the guy that gave me this kit already had plans duplicated. The originals are turning pretty yellowish so I'm working from the copied plans. I would be glad to send you them once I'm far enough along, in fact I may just send you both the original and the copy. But you might have to give me a reminder sometime, I'm only 56 but the ol' grey matter... well it seems to be getting grey more quickly these days! So... uh... where was I going with that...

Well, anyway, taking some sick time today so I'll see if I can't get a little more done on the fuse.

Take care,
David

Ayep; I still build a stick-n-tissue Guillow's or Sterling kit now and then to keep from gettin' rusty. We used to say you build those to prepare for Comet kits where you have to cut everything out, to get ready for TopFlite red-box kits, to prepare for Royal, to get ready for Pica and VK... Done there? Get some plans and scratch-build one or two. Now, see that wreck that ol' boy just threw in the trash can over there? Pull it out and rebuild it.

Had one guy said the only reason I showed up at the field on Sundays was to pick up the crashes; torqued him off pretty good when I took one of his home one Sunday, and brought it back ready to fly the next...

Thanks, David, I'd much appreciate that! I've waited this long, I can stand to wait a little longer; besides, I've got a couple of others I need to finish repairing and get back in the air...then there's the motorcycles to finish, and oh yeah, a real job I have to remember to show up for, too.

56, huh? I think I remember that year...

Lookin' forward to seeing that build of yours finished and in the air.

Thought I'd get more done, but as usual... There are some parts missing, specifically right now a couple cabin former's. In the process of cutting those out from the plans I found a few errors. Parts shown in one spot that don't line up to the same parts in a different area! So with that in mind I had to determine which one to believe, think I have it figured out though, at least for those two former's. Another thing wrong, the wing cord at the cabin where it is supposed to fit between those two former's is 1/8" wider on the wing plan that what's shown on the fuse plan. My plan is to cut the TE of the wing to fit around the rear cabin former.

I didn't take very many photos, just of the two little saddles I glued in to help me keep the rear cabin former in line while I epoxied it in. Then I got busy with other things and... well here I am!

Hey Jim, it'll be my pleasure to send those to you. I've had so much help over the years, this will give me a chance to finally pay it forward.

Ha, ha! The best revenge on the guy! I followed a similar path except I started with the Comet model. I blame it for my R/C addiction!

And a little more! I got the wing so it fits perfectly and is square with the fuselage. I decided I would pin the two front corner braces since I'd rather no lose the wing in a high G maneuver. The rear two I left as is.
There's still a little time, I might just go out and tinker a little more while my SBach charges for flying tomorrow.

And one update: I got the rest of the cap strips in but got a little hung up on the wing tips, not enough pictures or diagrams for me to know how to build them. Guess I'm still somewhat of a rookie.[/QUOTE]

I've built two of those buggers......and the wing tip is strictly up to you.....

tailskid, just the person I want converse with! I'm way beyond the wing tips, but thanks for the wing "tip" anyway.

I've got another question. I'm putting the bottom formers in place and something isn't making sense to me. This is the transition from the front F4 to F3 which goes right up against F4. I cut three F4's and one F3 per the instructions. I glued in the F4's, again per the instructions and then went on to the F3. Now the plans front and side view that shows F3 in position show it bigger than the template that is used to cut it out. By the way, I'm guessing you have to make some of these parts yourself and they are die crushed for you, either that or they are just plane missing. Take a look at my photos of my actual formers and what the plan shows they look like in place. What gives?

One note on photo #3. The plans say "Beyond..." and I can't make out the rest. What does it say there?

"Beyond..... here lies the greatest opportunity to scratch build a kit"

As far as F4 and F3 goes....(it has been a LONG time)...does the sheeting go from round to a straight angled cockpit opening? You can't see anything inside with the wing on, so don't spend too much effort in the cockpit area. By the way, my two kits were A&A Industries kits....which would make you kit OLDER than mine were!

Looking at those plans made me have nightmares....I swear I never really 'finished' those kits, just got tired of building and flew 'em! And they do fly well....I think I had a Saito 40 on both of mine.

Keep sanding Oh, you may want to make the wing/fuse cutout a bit larger to accommodate the covering material as you have a very nice fit, too nice if you add some covering material.

CFF

here's a pic of my 1/4 scale. ignore the gear. I altered style. you can see the construction of the two formers you noted.hopefully pics will help. I built a the section over gear mounting as remove-able "just in case". I know mine is 1/4 but they build very similar.

Ah, after seeing yours, RagwingFan, the ol' "Light bulb" came on again. I bet my nose stringers are supposed to go on top of F3, I'll have to check once I get home.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Take care,
David

Looks like just 1/8 sheeting wrapping nose, stringers under sheeting would be nice, did not see stringers on your plan though

DOH! You're right. I looked at yours again, this time zoomed way in. I guess yours and mine are about the same. I'm still not understanding what the plans show. They make it look like the "nose" end extends below the bottom by 1/4 inch. Am I seeing things?

probably more like 1/8 difference between the nose sheeting where it meets up with leading edge of landing gear and the sheeting that covers over the landing gear area on the bottom of the fuse

ahh, best of both worlds...kit building and scratch building. Nosen kits are fun.

When I got home I looked over everything and found out all I have to do is space up the piece I cut 1/8". Then when the 1/8" sheeting is in place, it matches the plan, and it looks a bit more like yours RagwingFan.

Now to look at battery installation before I get too far. J_Cunny gave me the idea of (and I haven't looked at the exact model yet) creating a battery hatch with the wind shield up to the firewall. I would have to cut a hole in the firewall under the motor, but it looks like everything will fit. Comments, suggestions?

And just because I don't think I posted it before...
