Default The GP Cap 232 is almost there

Just gotta finish painting the cowl and pants and she'll be ready. Os 50 sx power with Jr 591 servos. Pic is taken with a camera phone hence the poor quality! Colour scheme is based on Miacheal Goulians show plane (before it turned into a red white and green Castrol monster.) Underside on wings and tail is metallic gold[8D]

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Josh that plane of yours looks great - mine seems quite dull in comparison! Do you guys have any particular problems with flying the plane - I am concerned about possible tip stalling at low speeds - altho the dihedral should help. Mine looks like it may be a tad tail heavy which I am not unhappy about at all - nothing worse than a nose heavy plane on landings. Where have you guys set your CG?

You have picked a real winner of a plane. I took a long break from RC stuff and finally decided to get into Helis. After flying helis for about a year I decided to give planes a try. Having some experience with gliders as a kid I decided my first plane should be the GP Cap. I couldn't bring myself to get a trainer and after about 4 months of building I had my OS .70 Surpass powered Cap. A few weeks on the simulator and I figured I would give the real thing a try. I took the Cap to the field, set up the motor, and let it rip. I found the plane to fly quite nice and would perform all the aerobatics I could throw at it. I never had mine tip stall but I never added too much elevator. I flew the plane without incident for about 1.5 year until the tail feather, elevator half, met its doom while I was loading it into my truck. The plane is strong but could not withstand having a tool box loaded on the elevator. Decided to retire it at that point.

Don't worry about tip stalling. Just don't add a ton of elevator when landing and you will be fine. If a first time flyer can land it you should be able to.

As for the CG, mine was right in the middle of the recommended range.

Will be completing the spray work this week. We cant get lustrecote here so I have to use car paint base coat or Tamiya fuel proof flat for the metallic and spray 2k epoxy clearcoat over it. Quite a pain to match the colours as a result. Mods include a slightly taller rudder, ligtening holes in the rudder and elevator tips and slightly longer ailerons. I stuck with the single aileron servo for weight and appearance reasons. Rudder servo is side mounted to stay out of the exhaust gunk!

I put a GMS .76 in this one, and it flat out soars in the vertical.

Well lets just say THE CG IS OFF!!!! MOVE IT WAY FORWARD!!! I had mine where they recomended it and holy crap it is the tippiest plane ever oh my god it was like a leaf all it wanted to do was tip stall!!!! Im adjusting mine to 3 1/4 inches instead of the 3 3/4! Trust me the plane is sensitive to every thing when trying to do anything like walk the dog, its impossible where the cg is!! Scareist first flight ever thats all i have to say i went dead stick!! I wish my motor held in better! hope this helps dont want u guy to get the same shock i did, oh yes for trim all it needed was 4 clicks down and 3 click right.

I agree, Just started flying mine about a month ago. Had all sorts of problems with CG. Ended up moving CG forward a bit, and adding some expo to elevator. fly's nice now.

I will measure this evening and let you know. I don't know where it is at right now. However, I wish I had not put that rudder servo in the tail. Moving that forward would have helped out a lot.

I have had no trouble with the engine. I am running a new o.s .50 SX with slimline pitts muffler.

I have the CG at 3-3/4" and it is fine for me. It will snap if not careful but I haven't had a problem. I originally had an OS 46fx with a Bisson pitts muffler and it would draw fuel at all. I put a slimline muffler on it and now have no problems. But I've still thought about buying a Perry pump for it.

motodude11, sorry to hear about your cap. Mine went deadstick last night, but I managed to bring her back without incident.

Josh
i have the webra 50 too and had midrange problems, but i fixed it by totally resetting needles to 2 1/2 on both low and high speed. After leaning out top end i slowly leaned on low speed till transition was perfect then checked the mid range and it was perfect. if you haven't done that already try it.

i also have the GP cap, i have it weighing at 4.5 pounds with no covering, cowl, and spinner but everything else so it sould just be under 5 pounds when i finish it. i have 2 expert mini servos for the airlerons 2 standards for rudder and elevator, and and hs-55 for throttle. i carved out the ply formers and fuse sides which took out about 4 ounces. i made 2 inch wide stick airlerons which are lighter than stock and made a dowel pushrod with a Y on the end for the elevator which also saved some weight. The webra is going in it.

Tom your setup will be insane if that comes out at the weight you want it too, the little time i had flying mine it was sick, the thing was whistling across the field!! It will be an awesome plane once i get that webra right!!! I've reset the motor tons of times but I know that pump will fix it, and it will have consistent fuel flow through any maneuver because im a big 3d freak and i do alot of verticle stuff. Thanks for the help Tom! Oh yes my cap weighs 6lbs with an hs81 throttle servo, bigger lightening holes in fuse, unsheeted canopy, mini receiver, the webra 50, and unsheeted wing tips! I wish I could have done more to lighten it but I doubt I could have.

im sorta confused by the sheeted canopy and wingtips because my instruction manual didn't mention anything about sheeted canopy or wintips maybe my kit is a newer version or something? Right now my canopy floor has a big lightnening hole in it. i guess i will just cover it with 400 grit sandpaper to make the floor. i did not install a pilot figure to save more weight as well.
