Default YET ANOTHER 4* 120 with a RYOBI 31cc gas

Getting ready to fit the Ryobi 31cc in mine moved the firewall back 1.75" just to make the engine look good and keep the prop up close to the fuse. I also highly recomend making a hatch for the fuel tank up front I love to be able to get inside there when I need to. Now with just two bolts I can easy see pics.

If you want to save some tail weight then taper down the rudder and elevator see pics below I did the ailerons as well. This also makes the flight surfaces just a little more responsive defiantly worth doing. I really hate the flat wing tips on this plane so I rounded them up I think it looks much better. Well almost ready to cover can’t wait better get at it I’ll post more pics soon.

Another thing Sig forget to have you do on this kit is sheet that turtle deck. Here’s how it’s done quick and easy. Notice how there seems to be just enough gap from the stringers to the bulkheads about 1/16”. Well take advantage of that all you need is 6 strips of 1/16” balsa sheet to fit in between the stringers. Carefully cut and trial fit each piece to fit well see pic below. Once all are cut and ready for gluing remove them all. Always use aliphatic wood glue on sheeting much easer to sand use CA only in hidden structures inside the airframe. Put glue on the edges and reinstall each strip back in place use pins to hold in place if necessary. When it’s dry remove pins and sand round and smooth as a baby's bottom it looks so much better and very easy to do without adding much weight.

Got the tail done I keep those gussets going all the way to the back. Put small blocks under the gusset material and tack glue them in now carve and sand to shape. I also glue it up AFTER covering which makes covering it off the plane easer to do.

Agreed. Looks much better the way you did them. Nice bash. It's the little details that make 'em yours.

Am buying a 4*120 and this will be my first build. I have a good Satio 120 on the bench and am wondering if has enough to fly this aircraft. Just want to fly no hovering power required.

Thanks

I'm bashing a Fourstar 60. I rounded the wingtips and the rudder and elevator. I also built a cowling of sorts. Just finished covering it with Super Coverite and getting ready to paint. I hate Monokote. Will post pics shortly.

Canuck2005,

There are several of these flying at my club. Although I am powering mine with a RCS 140, most are flown with an OS120. The OS flies it fine so the Saito should work well..

Yes that will fly her just great and is a good engine I also have one in my Mustang. IF you have any other questions on your build please continue to ask me here so others can read them too thanks.

Thanks Stickbuilder.
Saturday I am picking up my kit. Have most of my building tools but too do the little extras that you have suggested what would a extra material list be. As this is my first build I am pretty green on a lot of things, so I might be a bit of a pain.

No pain at all ask anything anytime. Well let me see do you have some T pins? They are a must I have two sanding blocks one is course and the other is fine for smoothing. For filling I use light weight wall spackling get Red Devel it drys hard but easy to sand. You can't have to many x-acto knives handles (they seem to just walk away) and #11 blades buy them by the 100 pack from Tower Hobbies you'll need-em. And a good steel yard stick for trimming sheet balsa is handy Shoppers Supply has those for few bucks. Buy lots of clamps you can never have to many clamps see link below.

I'm putting the servos in the tail to use shorter 4-40 push rods. If anyone plans to do this mod don't remove the cutouts in the tail and glue them in solid. Also back up your servo cutouts (see pick) with some ply scrap this will make your servo mounts more solid.

I LOVE IT

It is absolutely fantastic. The color scheme and graphics are perfect and really stand out.
I could only dream of someday covering as good.

Can't get over how nice-looking that came out and I can not wait to see the rest of the covering. Post the finished pics as soon as you can, will be eagerly awaiting the completed photos of this beauty.

Great work [sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif]

How long you been building and flying?
I'm 45 years old and have been building since I was 14 I learned to fly at 16. Building literally hundreds of planes over the years I have learned many skills I could write a book. These planes range from many simple trainers to complex multi engine, retractable landing gear war birds and jets. To the very large scale TOC (Tournament of Champions) 3-D Extras, caps, Sukhois and Yaks. I love to build and cover planes almost as much as flying them maybe even a bit more. For me however there are no better Sunday flyers than the classic Sig kits like the Sig Kadet, hog bipe, Four star and Something Extra. However if war birds are your flavor you can never go wrong with Top Flite series of kits all are well engineered and fly great but require more skills as a builder and pilot to have complete success.

The Fourstar and ryobi is a great combination. My motor just runs better and better, finally breaking in.

Thought I’d kill two birds and show my newly painted cradles and my newly finished 4* 120 with Ryobi 35cc engine mod. Notice the new wagon with heavy duty (300 lbs. capacity) tundra inflatable tires. This wagon it not a toy it’s a work horse meant for lawn and garden use designed to go over grass and bumps with ease. I plan to ad a ½” ply platform to the wagon raising the flight box so I can get into the drawers of the flight box. The flight box will then sit another 4” higher for easer starting and tinkering as the plane sits in the cradles. Wow the plane looks great just some odd colors of covering I had around the shop. It was nothing planed with any thought just wanted to use it up. I did buy some of that carbon fiber colored Ultarcote I always wanted to incoropreate that stuff into a covering job. The automotive customizes use the real carbon fiber a lot inside show cars and it looks cool. Well let me tell ya it looks dang cool on model planes too! I did the whole cockpit area inside and out with stuff and the checker board is also done with it too. I also trimmed, flipped the canopy front to rear and smoked it a little looks so much better. Don’t it? Oh sorry about the scene stealer but she likes to ham things up a bit oh well.
Your box looks great tigerdude.

When learning to fly RC airplanes you start with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Your goal is to fill the experience bag up before your luck runs out.

I am about to put a Ryobi 31 cc into a 1.08 sized Dynaflyte Chipmunk, some people say it will not have enough power. What is the wing span on that plane, and how much does it weigh?

Thanks for your help!

I've seen a Ryobi 31cc pull a 25 pound Cub on floats out of the water just fine. Are you using CDI ignition? You should and remove all the baffles from the stock muffler or use a Jag Engines muffler this will help give you a bit more power. Dynaflyte (Great Planes) tends to overbuild which leads to a heavier than necessary airframe. You'll be in the ballpark for sure, takeoff speeds however may not be blinding let her climb out on her own don't pull it up, she will build speed slowly it will be fine. Use a good balanced sharp APC prop NOT A WOOD prop. Not sure of the flight weight of the 4* but my Gas hog bipe is 16 pounds and she flies just great with a Ryobi 31.

I built that Chipmunk several years ago and flew it with a converted Homelite 25 on an APC 17X8 prop. The plane was heavy at around 16+ pounds, but with that big 89" wing, it flew well, about like the scale trainer version. Scale in this case means somewhat aerobatic, as the original trainer was no slouch. It is a good model. If they were still in production, I would build another one (a bit lighter).

Ok, you asked for it. This is definantly a mod that has not been mentioned, and I would suggest never seen. I got a 4* in a trade and had a HP49 4-stroke I wanted to put on it. The motor, though compact, is quite heavy. I went with a 6v. batt. and was going to have to place it 11 inches back in the tail from F3. As I was devising a mount to place it in the already built tail, that mount turned into a C-channel cage 12 inches long in order to slide the batt. into position. After completion of the "cage" mount, I thought, "I should hook a servo to that!"

Presto...In flight adjustable CG
