RE: CMP Zero Makeover
hey guys. i have the 60 version and recently faced with a big obstacle. I decided to keep the stock retracts(to be used with hitec hs75-bb). Sadly for the second time around, they burned out and has kept me from doing my maiden flight. Been considering the JR791 for replacement. CG still heavy on the tail and measured it at almost 120g to level out(if added to the firewall). Any tips? my first warplane and not too many guys at the field with extensive experience on retracts..
thanks

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Mine is the 60 sized version as well!
Try to move everything including the kitchen sink inside the fuse to the farthest forward position you can. My servos are mounted in the sub former one atop the other right next to the fuel tank and on either side of it. My battery (a big heavy one) is mounted front left in the cowl. With this set up I needed no lead for balance even though I shortened the cowl to be scale accurate and added some thickness (with micro balloons) to the fuse between the canopy and vertical fin as this area is far too skinny to be scale.
As far as the gear goes. Mine work very well. Your best friend here will be to use a really powerful light (to see things clearly) and patience to study the retracts, connecting wire and servo itself for any areas of slop servo stall, unnecessary connecting wire bending and full actuation and travel of the plunger in the retract itself. Get all that right and they will work well, every time.
Good luck to you!

So, as i read about the dual clunk and vent lines... it occured to me that maybe I'm not supposed to pressurize the GAS tank using exhaust? Have I just been very lucky not to have created a big firey mess?
I bet it would be adramatic video if someone captured it.... but I admint I just didn't even think about it. My Zenoah G38 has two exhaust pressure ports, and I assumed one was for smoke and the other was for the fuel tank....
Would someone please educate me in case I'm doing something dangerous?
Thanks in advance,

Found the answer here...

Since I don't want to see any midair explosions, I'll vent the tank to the atmosphere instead to from the exhaust!
It's funny now, but would not have been... and it could have been really really not funny....

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Has anyone installed the ASP 400 radial on this aircraft? I am in the process of starting, and it looks like the rocker box covers will need removed for cowling clearance. I do not want to put holes in the cowling. It may fit with just removing the clearance bumps on the rocker box covers. I'll try it tomorrow and post a few pictures. I also thought about putting teflon tape pads on the inside of the cowl. There is a YouTube video of the CMP Zero with the ASP, but can't find any other info.

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Hello Ken,
Yes, I plan the exact setup you are. I have all the things I need including the engine but will begin assembly in the winter. recently completed a project and now 1 more in front of the 80 CMP zero. The ASP fits perfectly in the cowl. No holes need be cut in the cowl. I'm adding a dummy up in front of it so it will look right but still have a great sound as well.

Did you flatten out the top of the valve covers? It looks like the valve covers are flat and fit flush with the cowling in your pictures. Mine fits fine with the valve covers removed, but when reinstalled, the protrusions on the top of the valve covers are hitting the cowling. What type of exhaust are you planning on using? I have a Kelo exhaust, which would make a "cleaner" installation, but the short stacks would be more scale. I have had the Zero for probably three years, but have not done anything with it, but have a 1400mm FMS Zero on the way so thought that it is time to get it started .

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Ken,
Actually, no, no mods to the valve covers and it still fits well. The pics are just a test fit I made a while ago. (like you this has been in my workshop for a few years). In the pics, the engine is sitting on a paint can and the cowl is just placed over it. So, the cowl traveled down along the engine till it finally touched the valve covers. In actuality it will be much further back to make room for a dummy up front. I'll probably have to add an extended drive shaft off the front to do this. That far back there is even more clearance from the cowl and valve covers. Not to mention that the engine is not all that hot up there. I can easily put my hand on it while it's running so I doubt it will soften char or burn the fiberglass. Especially if you do a layer of fiberglass cloth and jb weld for the resin.
Regarding the exhaust, I will probably make my own, adding the side exhausts. I did this on a smaller zero a few years back and seeing the smoke puff out from all those stacks was just awesome. I will make it a priority on this one too. Yes, it got a bit messy but it ddid also look very realistic.

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
ive only posted questions up to this point and progress is slow going but i thought id share some of my work
i plan on doing as much work on the workings and cockpit before i concentrate on the outside looks, ive made a full depth cockpit for my JI JOE zero man and got it as scale as im going ive made the conopy servo operated which im very excited about ive also gutted the body of all formers and started again and intergrated the servos into the cockpit floor as far forward as i can. ive also deskined the wings and added better ribs and bears for my retracts which are servo wingspan models with yt internation legs and wheels. i plan on using my DLE30cc petrol with a smoke system also flaps and bomb drop next few month will be spent on the outside glassing the wings and tail adding pannel lines and rivets and then finnish it off with klass cote 2 part paint in a white scheme
one more question though i realy do not like this canopy its to foggy and doesent show off the work ive done does anyone know of a suitable replacment thats clearer and that will fit the makings in the fiberglass body?

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Hi everyone,
Being that I have a limited budget, and I want to make sure I can get this largest scale bird I've ever worked on, able to fly before investing hundreds in to retracts. Can someone point me at the right place to get a set of landing gear/struts (NON-retract) that will work well with this bird, being that the stock pair are cheapo's.? I know and am going to reinforce the wing were they are placed. I'll be on a grass field, so I've read something compatible with atleast a 4" tire well be needed.
Thanks, Chris

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
You could also just buy the oleos (not the expensive part of the retract equation, but the most beneficial in terms of handling a rough field) and mount them on your music wire if you are concerned about shock to the airframe just using the wire. Later, if you decide to add the retract mechanism themselves then you will all ready have the oleos.

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
I received my engine standoffs late yesterday and made a little progress with installing my 400 in the CMP Zero. I am still waiting for the Microsens on board glow system but it should arrive any day now. Progress is slow but the project is moving forward.

I received the Microsens on board glow system today. I am running out of excuses now, I guess it is time to get busy and complete the build of my ASP 400 radial engine powered CMP Zero.
Best wishes and Good Safe Flying!

Actually took one of my zeros out of storage yesterday. I was able to get all the servos installed for the plane, and the tail completed. Today, I'll have the wings done and then it's on to mounting the Rimfire 65cc motor. You can build this thing in about two days if you wanted.
It won't sound as good as your radial[]

Very nice looking engine you got there. I have built one of these and it is a great flying warbird. I hope you have reenforec your firewall and cowl for this plane the stock firewall will breakway very easliy if you hand to nose the plane over and that will just ruin the stocl cowl if you don't renforce it. I am building my another CMP Zero and using a RCG 50cc engine in it with electric retracks this time.

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
I have one of the 80in ws cmp zeros, powered by a G-62, that i have loved flying for years but it is slated to go electric. as soon as i can find a new cowl for it. the pressent cowl would look like swiss cheese without the G-62 stuffed in it. anyone have leads on where to get a new one?

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Joe,
My friend Paul makes these cowls and they are a lot stronger compared to the original cowls. The are quit expensive but well worth the money. They are $55 plus shipping and they will need to be painted. He re-enforced my original cowl and it weighs over a lb. That is less weight needed up front and you know how much weight these Zero need up front to balance. If you want one send me a PM and I'll talked to Paul about making you one.
