RE: TL-01 over heating when dirfting
OOh, oh dear.
What's your current electrical setup?
If you don't have a heatsink fitted; I came accross a really good one the other day when browsing.
Made specifically for the TL01, its a big pink heatsink. But who cares what colour it is if it works eh?
So far only spotted on morfars.com

RE: TL-01 over heating when dirfting
My Team Losi xxx-s had an overheating problem when I first started drifting.
First off, make sure nothing is binding. I got a heat sink from Integy and mounted a Novak fan to it with a bread twisty. You can plug it into an extra spot on your reciever and it will turn on when you turn the car on. At first my car got to 200'+, now the highest it will go is 155' during the summer. Now that it is winter, I have run it a few times lately and it has only gone up to 135'.
btw, I am running a 19t Komodo Dragon which has bearings and probably helps with the heat also. Here are pics of the heat sink and fan.
good luck

RE: TL-01 over heating when dirfting
Hi,
Drifting requires lots of torque and rarely off throttle. A smaller pinion gear is suggested. Still remember last time I drift with my Tamiya TA03F with sport tuned motor, I had the solder melted at night time temperature. Imagine how hot it got.
Regards
Joaquim

I'd change the gearing before getting a heatsink. The heatsink will only reduce temps, but won't do anything for the longevity of your equipment. When properly geared, your equipment will run cooler. Simply adding a heatsink only masks the problem.

You cn run really high gearing ona TL01 provided You let the car cool down.
The motors can overheat if they are subject to too higher gearing, but people often mess around with changing the wheels on them too (I know I did).
You can't fit a heatsink with fan to a TL01 because you would cover the end bell, risking a short circuit. The heatsink I suggested is the biggest available and well worth the investment.

However the heatsink and fan are really a great investment and they do work. Dropping the temp. by 40-50 degrees is amazing. I can go "all out" with mine and when I stop and pick it up you can watch the temp fall. If you think about it, the motor is inside of the car and you're drifting so you don't get much air-flow. Also, on a sedan, the motor is very close to the asphalt, which is hot. It just needs extra help cooling.
Alex A- Do you have a temp. guage? How hot does it get? What motor are you useing.
crash_alot- Where did you get that heatsink. I have been thinking about ditching the bread twisties. I can't complain, it works.

I've had this one for a while now and haven't had any problems with it. I'm also running a 15t in my TL-01 which before I got the heat sink was running really hot. My gearing is the 21 tooth pinion with the speed tuned gear set.
