What are you guys using for a mount material, wood, aluminum, steel, or what ? Got some 5/8" wide partical board here, what do you think about using that ? It's very strong stuff.
And how much air space between the bottom of the turbine, and the mount base ?

They are a little slow getting things out. I had a little wait for mine. However, when I had a valve go bad, a new one was sent at no charge. I think the company is run by a gentleman and his wife.

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
Hi guys, my name is Christophe and I'm flying a falcon 120 with P80.
I live in France.
The first flight as been down last weekend and it was wonderful! 4 minutes of happyness!
I'll try to post some pics soon.
I have now a question:
Why are you all putting some downthrust on the turbine? how much sould I put with my P80?
What is the real center of gravity? On the maiden, my falcon was nose heavy but COG was at 320 mm (330mm on the guide book).
I'm going to JET POWER this weekend so if anybody of you want to meet and discuss with me I'll be pleased.
have nice flights all, regards,
Chris.

parabelum (chris) I have a P-80 also. I have not flown it yet![:@] I still have to get a measure on my downthrust, but I think I might have 5-6 degrees of downthrust.

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
Hello Chris,
I have made several mounts for Falcon 120's. The plane has a flat bottom airfoil and tends to climb at higher speeds. The faster you go the more it wants to climb, just like a trainer. Downthrust offsets this tendency.
5 degrees of downthrust works for 14 lbs. class engines. I have found that the more powerful the engine the more downthrust is needed. I have 6 degrees downthrust with my Wren SS (18 lbs. thrust) and it works well.
If you have an older P-80 I suggest that you start with 6 degrees. If it tends to climb at high speed then you can shim it slightly with washers. If you have a newer 21+ lbs. P-80 then I suggest you dial down the thrust.
The recommended 330 mm. CG works very well.
Regards,
Joe

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
Thanks for info!
I'll put the COG at 330mm.
I've exchanged my old P80 number 122!!! So I have a brand new P60SE with kero start and I thinking about selling it and buy a bigger turbine to put it in another (bigger) plane in the futur.
My reflexion is: what should be the best turbine between Merlin 90 and Rabbit?
Does anybody knows what size of tank is needed for the smoke fluid used with a smoke system on the Falcon?
regards.

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
Hi Parabellum, I use 250 ml of diesel fuel, which gives me about 30 seconds of smoke. I use an air bottle (same as the retract bottle) to push the fluid out of a small plastic tank. I use a small servo to operate an air valve to allow the air from the air tank to the fuel tank. The fluid is pushed through a 3mm brass tube into the exhaust. The tube is crushed approximately 3mm from the end down to about -015 thousands of an inch. I have found it slightly better if the tube is not crushed right at the end, crushed 3 or 4 mm from the end with the tube round at the extreme end seems good. I have been told that the end of modeling knife is just about perfect. I have found it best to spray the fluid slightly fwd into the exhaust flow, just make the bend slightly more than 90 degrees. I tried expensive smoke fluid but it is only just slightly better than diesel but about twice the price. There is some footage on youtube under falcon120.
If you need any more info please pm me for a chat. cheers Tim
Ps i use air and not an electric pump, because i have no more channels left on my transmitter and didnt want to run the pump dry. I now use the rudder mix switch, linked to the undercarriage up selection to give me a small amount of extra movement to operate the air valve, so it is now fully selectable on or off without the need for an extra channel. To clarify, i select up on the gear, gear goes up and smoke is off. Now select the rudder mix switch and the air valve opens due to the undercarriage selector moving 2 or 3 mm more.

new2jets, very impressive! How did you form the fork holding the nose wheel? I formed mine by cutting and filing from solid block, good for the arm muscles!! I'm still quite surprised how easy it is to make a good quality shock obsorbing U/C.

Ausie, meant to reply earlier, great job with the undercarriage, a credit to you, let us know how they perform.
I flew with a boomerang jet again and took a bit of inflight footage, posted it here. Flycam is now 100% reliable, it has not failed once, following the mod i did on the battery, see previous post
www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vSsmtkkTK4
Boomer has an 18 pound Wren 54 super in it and weighs somewhere around 16.5 pounds all up with fuel. The falcon still needs 1/2 or full flap for me to fly along side comfortably and appears a lot faster in flight. You can see on the take off that we get off at about the same point which is a credit to the Falcon, with no flap, and all up weight full of fuel and smoke fluid, landing light, brakes, extending nose leg and repairs etc, I was at 20 pounds AUW, and the engine puts out only 13.5 pounds to 14 pounds. Credit to the model.
we are at 84 flights now and last few flights were in zero wind, what a delight to fly. tried my first landing on the tarmac, really nice, but my right brake decided not to perform as well as the left, hence the pull to the left on landing. One thing i learned was to stand at exactly the same distance away from the landing model that you normally do. I was tempted to stand a bit too close to the slightly narrow tarmac and landed a little closer than normal to me, so perspective was slightly different. I will remember to stand a touch further away next time.
Also, whilst taking off together, if an engine failure occures, we agreed to imediately turn left off the tarmac to prevent a collision. It is great fun flying together and we really did get it together at the end, but alas didnt have video of that, but we did find it easier to fly slower rather than fast, and the best position to form up is on the approach, down the strip, as this the most familiar position you will be in, ie lined up for a landing. on the down wind leg it is hard to judge distance. On one occasion the boomer came very close to the smoke and Bob lost sight of his model momentarily and another occasion, with full flap on the falcon, he hit my wake and the turbulence rocked his model.
Cheers Tim

Hi Aussie1 i profile milled it out of some 1/2" ali plate on a cnc milling machine not much good for your arm muscles but does a nice job, have you tryed your undercarrage out yet ????????
